I have been playing for about a week on Sarge level, and I gotta give some credit to the AI. They are not too bad. I have played two games both as the Yanks and the detailed combat has been very tough (at least until late 1863).

I have a hard time trying to dislodge the AI from their defensive entrenchments. I am not looking for any tricks or spoilers from anyone because I want to find out the best ways myself. So far flank does not always work. The union just has some poor quality units. The only beef that I have is that it seems like the AI never runs out of ammunition, even when I chase off their supply caisson.

Oh, the AI has a peculiar way of banzai charging my units when it is still in column formation. They get eliminated rather quickly.

Other than that the AI is rather good.

I think Hard Sarge suggested using arty to fight entrenched troops but it is difficult to supply artillery for all those divisions. Toobad they don't come with their own artillery batterries.

Currently there's a bug with entrenchments where the enemy gets the benefit no matter what your respective facing is.
This makes it very tough for the Yanks to dislodge a defending confederate army as the quality bonus plus the defensive bonus makes it near impossible to whip them with less than 3-1 forces in HW.

However, if you still want to give it a go, what I would suggest to do is first work on a flank and just pound each unit in turn. Furthermore, make sure you run off their supply caissons so that they can't whip you too quickly with fire. Once they run out of ammo, you will have more staying power but if you leave them in supply, you will likely rout from their fire before you can make a significant dent in their forces.

You can occasionally bait them out of their defensives but I haven't done this consistently enough to tell you exactly how to do it. If you can do so however, then it's much easier!

I have been able to bait them out on a few occasions but I am not sure what I did exactly to get them to do that.  I certainly do flank them AND drive off the supply caissons but it is still a long process to drive them out of the entrenchments.  It will be nice when they fix the bug with the entrenchments.
