moses -> Secret Japanese minelayers (1/29/2007 10:58:43 PM)

Does anyone else know that four of the at sea jap subs in the standard scenario can be switched to mines at sea on the first turn of the scenario?

I've been playing since the game came out and have never heard of it.

Imagine my surprise when on turn one Japan somehow mines Batan!!!

Learn something every day.

I have used them to mine Singapore on Day 1.

The same is with Dutch sub-minelayers.

Actually, that was Bataan that I mined. Had I been foolish enough to mine Batan, knowing my luck, I would've probably sunk one of my own ships!

After you exhaustively analyse all the first turn possibilities and spend hours working on your first turn. What a shock when your first combat reports are of your ships exploding in places where you thought it was "impossible" for mines to be.

Sort of like.......real life.[:D]

I just caused heavy damage to DD Express at Palembang with such a move [:)] (the mine hit occurred on Dec 8th.) More mines are ready at (confidential) locations...

I have tried to use one to mine Singapore on Day 1. By the evening of Day 1 I was short a minelaying sub. [:(]

Monter_Trismegistos -> RE: Secret Japanese minelayers (1/30/2007 4:49:20 PM)

Once I ordered 2 Japanese minelaying subs to drop their cargo in Palembang. Next day both Danae and Dragon hit a mine - one of them sank instantly.

Hortlund -> RE: Secret Japanese minelayers (1/30/2007 5:32:29 PM)

I always use my two mine-laying subs to mine Rangoon on the first turn.

IJN starts with 4 minelaying subs loaded with mines, at sea. It's just a matter of telling them where to go and using their 7x magic first turn advantage. I guess other "normal" subs that start in port can be loaded with mines too.
