String -> String(IJN) vs herwin(USN) A not so glorious AAR. (2/2/2007 2:08:48 PM)

So, after a long absence i decided to return to WitP PBEM land. And this time i decided to try out the CHS mod.

We play CHS scenario 159.

Historic first turn, Dec 7th surprise, PDU, Allied damage control, Sub doctrines on.

Following house rules are implemented:

0. If a country didn't do something for solid operational reasons, don't do it. If it was not done for political reasons--OK to do it.

1. No bombing empty bases to artificially enhance pilot training. Ditto for bomber supply runs.

2. All Chinese land and air units that are assigned to China Command HQ are only permitted to move, or base, within China, Japanese Occupied China or Manchukuo. Chinese land and air units can ONLY move to locations outside China if they are first transferred to another HQ.

3. Air units belonging to China Command are allowed to fly missions to hexes outside China.

4. All Australian nationality Brigade and Division LCUs are only allowed to move within Australia Proper, DEI, Solomon Islands, New Britain, New Guinea (For flexibility purposes, I could reason that Australia would see those as part of it's expanded defense perimeter). The exception is all Australian LCUs of this size that are designated as AIF units, e.g. 9th Division AIF; the two AIF Brigades that start in Malaya. This restriction is permanent, even if the units are reassigned to a HQ other than ANZAC Command, and still applies even if a Division or Brigade is split into smaller units.

5. There are no restrictions for Australian air units, other than the normal restrictions that apply to air units that are assigned to the ANZAC Command restricted HQ.

6. Canadian land and air units can only be deployed in North America, including Canada, the USA, Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. This restriction is permanent, even if the units are reassigned to a HQ other than Canada Command.

7. Japanese land and air units that are assigned to the Kwantung Area Army HQ can not leave Manchukuo. They may leave if they are transferred to another HQ.

8. Naval Attack missions by 4 Engined Bombers must be at or above 10000 feet.

9. B29 only on level 6 or 7+ airfields, this should limit them to places that were big enough in real life.

10. Allied Bomber attacks against Infrastructure restricted to industrial sites owned by Japan prior to the war (prevent allied player from destroying key infrastructure that they would knock Japan out too early; Allies would not bomb friendly populations.)

11. No Japanese Surface Movement past Singapore until it has fallen.

12. No more than x50 aircraft per airfield level (does not count aircraft transiting).

13. Japanese subs allowed to enter the shipping lanes.

14. No USCM units on carriers before historic date. No improved japanese AC on CVE's (they couldn't carry anything larger than a zero.)

15. No gamey stuff such as transferring fixed coastal forts to SEAC via PP.

No battleships were sunk or have sunk until this day. The usual landings took place, Vigan, Aparri, Guam, Kota Bharu, Legaspi and Wake. I got lucky and Wake was captured on the first turn, so this is somewhat of an exception.

12/08/41

The KB, already en-route towards Tokyo, attacked Pearl Harbor for the second time. The results were less than expected.

In SRA the japanese surface forces and aircraft sunk a lot of fleeing merchant ships. The first attack on Hong Kong achieved 1 to 1 assault odds. Since then i have been unable to pass 0 to 1.

12/09/41

Ships continue to sink via air and surface attack in the Philippine and South China sea. A surface TF blocks off Manila harbor and sinks several merchants attempting to flee. Notable losses are a DD and an AVD at Puerto Princessa to a japanese cruiser force. Japanese land on Tarawa and capture it. Kota Bharu is taken by Japanese 18th division.

12/10/41

Japanese cruisers raid and bombard Brunei, sink 2 tankers and damage a third there. Chinese port of Wenchow is struck from the air. Two AK's that are trapped there are subjected to daily air attacks by over 150 dive bombers from Shanghai and are reduced to scrap in about a week. Japanese bombers that are swiftly rebased to airfields of Singora and Kota Bharu strike at Georgetown and Alor Star. Merchants continue to sink. Several ineffectual air attacks on Japanese shipping by allied forces. Japanese paratroopers land on Tavoy but fail to capture the base due to the presence of a tenacious british base force.

12/11/41

The blocakding force off Manila is attacked at night by a torpedo boat squadron. DD Murasamae is damaged by a torpedo hit and two PT-boats are sunk. Several ineffectual air attacks on Japanese shipping by allied forces. Japanese bombers sink and damage several fleeing merchantmen and sink DD Thanet. Kure SNLF unit that landed at Legaspi advances to Naga but is checked there by a Philippine reserve division.

12/12/41

Japanese Surface forces raid Manado and Brunei, they bombard both bases and sink 2 TK and an AVD. The first close call of the day comes when CV Enterprise is spotted near Tarawa. She is attacked by 17 G3M Nells from Kwajalein. 5 F4F-3 wildcats are on cap but the bombers get through easily. Allied AAA holds firm though and none of the 14 Nells that make a torpedo run manage to hit the Enterprise.

Near Puerto Princessa CL Naka with 6 destroyers engages CA Houston, CL Marblehead, CL Boise and 9 destroyers in broad daylight. Several rounds of combat ensue and most Japanese ships are moderately or lightly damaged and DD Minegumo is sunk. On the allied side CL Marblehead and several destroyers are damaged.

The second close call comes when I-156 misses BB Prince of Wales near Sinkawang with a torpedo spread. Several ineffectual air attacks on Japanese shipping by allied forces. Japanese troops land on and capture Nauru island. Japanese also land at Brunei.

12/13/41

SS O20 puts two torpedoes into an AK near Saigon. Damaged MSW Penguin is further damaged near Truk by a E13A1 Jake. Usual air attacks near Malaya sink and damage several transports. I-124 sinks an AK on her return trip from a mining operation. Several ineffectual air attacks on Japanese shipping by allied forces. Japanese attack at Alor Star and achieve 1 to 1 odds. Japanese forces capture Tuguegarao, Brunei and Tavoy

12/14/41

MSW Penguin is intercepted and sunk south of Truk. I-162 torpedoes and sinks DD Paul Jones. Manila port and airfield is attacked by Japanese aircraft, 1 Nell is lost to flak. 6 P-40's and 3 B17's are destroyed in the air and ground. 4 Merchants, a gunboat and a DD are damaged. Several ineffectual air attacks on Japanese shipping by allied forces. Merchants continue to get damaged and sunk near Malaya.

Japanese light carrier force, trying to intercept the allied cruiser force that fought near Puerto Princessa, appears between Balikpapan and Tarakan, sinks two damaged DD's that are limping south and raid Tarakan port, damaging an AVD and 2 TK's there. The cruiser force is spotted at Balikpapan but the range is too great for the Kates. japanese forces shock attack at Alor star but are repulsed with heavy casualties and 0 to 1 odds.

12/15/41

Japanese airplanes raid Singapore airfield. 5 bombers are lost to flak and 6 aircraft are destroyed on the ground. 63 unescorted G4M1 Betties that had misinterpreted orders attack Manila airfield.
6 P-40E Warhawks on CAP manage to shoot down 3 of them. 5 aircraft are destroyed on the ground. Several ineffectual air attacks on Japanese shipping by allied forces.

American carrier borne bombers, believed to be from USS Lexington, sink merchant raider Hokoku Maru near Pago Pago.

Japanese light carrier force catches up with the allied cruiser force near Makassar and at extreme range the Kate bombers put 7 bombs into CL Marblehead and one into DD Whipple, damaging both. DD Samidare, damaged in the surface engagement near Puerto Princessa is sunk near Carmanh bay by SS Skipjack.

12/16/41

SS Skipjack is found and damaged by an ASW taskforce. AVD Arend is sunk by two Japanese destroyers near Weda. Another ineffectual air attack on Singapore results in 6 bombers downed by flak and a Buffalo I destroyed on ground. The light carrier force proceeds south of Makassar and sinks the damaged DD Whipple and damages several fleeing merchantmen. Several ineffectual air attacks on Japanese shipping by allied forces. Japanese forces capture San Fernando.

12/17/41

Japanese forces approach Ambonia and Kuching and begin unloading troops there. Some ships are hit and damaged by CD fire. Light cruisers Dragon and Durban try to intercept the force at Kuching but are promptly sunk by covering Japanese heavy cruisers. Two Japanese cruisers bombard Kuantan and inflict heavy casualties on the base force there. The damaged CL Marblehead is finally sunk by the light carrier force near Kendari. I-1 tries to get a shot at CV Saratoga between San Francisco and Pearh Harbor but misses. Several ineffectual air attacks on Japanese shipping by allied forces.

At Ambonia a second allied cruiser force, consisting of 1 CA, 3 CL and 6 DD engages the japanese covering force consisting of BB Nagato, BB Mutsu and 5 DD. They trade a few shots and long range and then the allied cruisers proceed to sink 4 transports that carry a base force. The BB TF engages them again after that and again basically no hits are achieved. Needless to say, i was not amused.

Another shock attack at Alor Star fails to dislodge the defenders despite achieving 2 to 1 odds and reducing forts to 0. Japanese troops land on and capture Makin.

12/18/41

Japanese forces continue to unload at Kuching and Ambonia. An approaching allied surface combat TF is spotted and attacked by G3M Nells from Saigon, BB Revenge recieves a torpedo hit and falls out of formation. CA Exeter, returning from the carnage at Ambonia, is attacked and sunk by the light carrier force.

The allied surface combat force sails into Kuching in two parts. The first, consisting of 1 CA and 4 Cl's is manhandled by the protecting japanese heavy cruisers and battleships. CL Ceres and Capetown are sunk and CA Cornwall is so heavily damaged that she will sink later. On the japanese side CA Mikuma, DD Nowaki are damaged and DD Sawakaze is sunk. BB Revenge recieves two penetrating hits from BB Fuso.

Japanese forces at Ambonia attack but recieve 0 to 1 odds. Japanese capture Lingayen.

12/19/41

Japanese invasion TF, covered by 4 CA and 4 DD arrives at Rabaul. They are met with an allied force of 3 CA and 4 CL. In the esuing battle CL Leander is sunk and CA Louisville, CL Achilles and DD Le Triomphant are damaged. CA Furutaka is heavily damaged and DD Yuzuki is sunk. The transports are defended however and they start unloading. Coastal guns damage several ships. I-164 torpedoes and sinks the damaged BB Revenge near Singkawang.

Manila harbor is attacked by army bombers. For the loss of 1 Ki-21-II sally 2 AK, 1 AR, 1 DD, 1 MSW, and 2 SS are damaged. B-17D bombers hit AK Hawaii Maru with a 500lb GP bomb north of Luzon and slightly damage her. All other allied air attacks were didn't hit anything. As usual, the japanese air power sank and damaged several merchantmen near Malaya.

G3M Nell bombers from Truk attacked allied cruisers at Rabaul and CA Pensacola recieved two torpedo hits. Another torpedo hit was recieved from submarine RO-60. Following that CA Louisville and CL Achilles engage the japanese screening force again. CA Aoba is heavily damaged and DD Oboro and DD Kikuzuki are sunk. In return both enemy cruisers are damaged, CA Louisville heavily.

Japanese forces capture Alor Star. Attacks at Kuching recieve 3 to 1 odds but fail to capture the base. Japanese paratroops and SNLF units land at Lucena, aiming to cut off the division at Naga.

12/20/41

DD Clark, screening CV Saratoga is torpedoed by I-6. Army dive bombers start operations from Brunei against Tarakan and damage a TK and a DD in the port there. Several ineffectual air attacks on Japanese shipping by allied forces. Merchants had a good day near Malaya as Kota Bharu was rained in all day. Only dive bombers from Singora flew and damaged just a few transports.

Japanese attacks at Ambonia, Kuching and Rabaul achive 1 to 1 odds and reduce forts. Kuching has now 0, Ambonia 1 and Rabaul 2 fort levels.

herwin -> Allied Report (2/2/2007 4:33:00 PM)

Generally consistent with String's report. I'm using WitPUtility to manage an intel database and do my analyses and tracking. (On the 19th, I knew where all of the IJN capital ships were plus most of the cruisers.) This has allowed me to set up a lot of mouse traps. Each one has cost me, but it also meant that the IJN was being hurt a lot earlier in the war. We're playing 159, so air casualties are a bit less than in stock. Japanese pilot casualties appear to be greater than allied so far.

Notes from the Allied side:

Malaya is falling fairly fast. Both Alor Star and Khota Baru have been taken. The RN warships evacuated to the DEI. Two old CLs were positioned to guard Kuching and eventually were sunk by an invasion flotilla. The Revenge led a Narvik raid on the Japanese ships at Kuching, did a lot of damage, and was sunk by a submarine on the way back. Brunei was quickly captured, preventing me from using the Borneo route for air evacuation.

In the Philippines, the Japanese advance on Manila and Bataan has been a little slower than historical. String positioned a TF outside Manila Bay to hit evacuating transports. I hit it with torpedo boats and then sent the Asiatic Fleet in to cover the evacuation. That resulted in a messy dogfight off Puerto Princessa. A number of obsolete US DDs were heavily damaged.

A division invaded at Amboina under the cover of a surface TF. I hit the invasion with a surface TF, getting behind the BBs and into the transports. LBA is currently harassing the BBs anchored offshore.

The mini-KB entered the narrow seas below Davao, sailed past Balikpapan, and pursued the remains of the Asiatic Fleet as it joined the Dutch for the strike at Amboina. I managed to lose it near Timor and began redeploying LBA to the area in the hope that I could hit it with an airstrike. So far, my pilots have been unwilling to launch against it.

Rabaul was invaded by a division. A RN surface TF patrolling nearby hit the invasion force and damaged the covering warships.

The Enterprise and Lexington headed south to raid the mandates after Wake fell. The KB spent an extra day at Pearl and then headed south in pursuit. After making an appearance near Tarawa, the US carriers lost the KB by moving out of Japanese search range. The KB ended up near Canton Island, hung around for a day and headed north back into the mandates. I had quickly (unlike Kimmel) redeployed American LBA and PBYs into the island bases and put them on naval search, to allow me to monitor the KB. I also deployed surface assets to trail the KB, searching for the IJN replenishment TF.

Some of the Japanese SS around Pearl headed east, and I have several TFs deployed to hunt them down.

12/21/41

Battleships Ise and Hyuga, with escorts, sink 2 PG and 4 AK with a small number of troops southeast of Puerto Princesa. I-166 torpedoes and sinks an AK in the straits of Malacca. I-6 tries to hit CV Saratoga near Hawaii but fails to get in range. I-19 torpedoes DD Humphreys about 600 miles southwest of San Francisco. Nine transports were hit by bombers from Singora and Kota Bharu. Most were heavily damaged and were carrying troops. Allied cruisers bombard japanese troops at Rabaul.

Japanese 16th division attacks and captures Naga, the philippino reserve division there surrenders. Ambonia, Kuching and Rabaul fall to Japanese troops. Companies from the 2nd Yokosuka SNLF unit land at and secure the bases of Victoria point, Sandakan and Jolo Island. A total of 6 Catalina I and 3 Hudson I aircraft were torched upon retreat in Rabaul.

12/22/41

Merchant raider Aikoku Maru intercepts an allied convoy about 350 miles northwest of Fiji. PG Swan is sunk and 4 AK's and 1 TK are damaged. Battleships Ise and Hyuga sink another TK. Kota Bharu is again rained in but planes from Singora get the chance to fly in the afternoon. 3 troop transports are hit hard. Army dive bombers from Brunei sink DD Scout near Tarakan. Allied bomber pilots try to return the favor but all of their air attacks miss their targets.

Japanese paratroops land on Jesselton and capture the empty base there.

12/23/41

Japanese heavy cruisers intercept and sink AK Tobelo, which was carrying troops, southeast of Puerto Princesa. SS Tautog attacks and damages AK Onoe Maru on the surface southeast of Tokyo.

Japanese bombers from Kuching locate and attack Prince of Wales and Repulse east of Palembang in two waves. Prince of Wales recieves two and the Repulse three torpedoes in total. Army and Navy bombers from Kota Bharu hit several transports in the malacca straits, sinking most of them. The airfield on Jolo island is also now operational, the B5N Kates from there attack and sink an AO, 3 AK's and an AP.

Another attack on Hong Kong fails, but this time the engineers manage to reduce forts to 2. Northwest of Kuantan a Japanese attack on british troops is repulsed, but barely. Japanese troops capture Baguio on Luzon and Georgetown in Malaya.

The ship losses so far in the campaign are:

BB 1/0
CA 2/0
CL 6/0
DD 9/7
PG 9/1
ML 2/0
MSW 5/1
PC 1/0
PT 5/0
AR 1/0
AS 1/0
AVD 3/0
AO 2/0
TK 7/0
AP 19/5
AK 36/0

I'm happy with most of those losses, especailly the AP and AK category, but the DD losses are quite bad for Japan. Luckily some of them were older models.

herwin -> RE: Total Losses (2/6/2007 4:15:31 PM)

Hard to judge, but I think I'm doing better than the Allies historically did. Most of the merchant losses have been ships in areas under Japanese threat or involved in evacuations, and there are plenty more to replace them. The one BB lost was an old R-class-I've had a lot more damaged, including my two fast RN ships, but all four of my carriers are in good shape. The cruiser and destroyer losses have mostly been older ships. Pilot losses have been fairly even, which means my air attrition strategy is working, although I wish my forward squadrons would be a bit more aggressive.

Now that's interesting-it's possible to track the KB when it's out of air search range. It's fairly sloppy about EMSEC, so if you pay careful attention to your SIGINT and submarine reports over a period of time and have a general idea of where to look, you can spot the pattern it makes. I suspect that's because there are a fairly large number of ships in the TF. Anyone else ever noticed this?

String -> RE: Total Losses (2/6/2007 5:34:19 PM)

12/24/41

DD Nowaki succumbs to damage and sinks right outside Saigon harbor. I-164 torpedoes and sinks PG Circe that was damaged yesterday in air attack. Prince of Wales recieves another torpedo. Aircraft from Kota Bharu hit merchant shipping in malacca straits again, damaging several ships.

The Kido Butai makes an appearance in the Coral sea, raining bombs down on five of the cruisers escaping from Rabaul. CA Pensacola, CA Canberra and CL Adelaide sink, CL Perth and CL Achilles remain afloat, although heavily damaged.

Japanese troops land at Cagayan while the combat northwest of Kuantan continues.

herwin -> RE: Total Losses (2/6/2007 6:56:39 PM)

The KB sprints into the Coral Sea and nails a retreating surface TF. Ouch. I bet none of the Allied aircraft in range even launch.

WTFO? The attack on the PoW made absolutely no sense for someone with a professional background in naval operations. That TF was under orders to make full speed out of the area, and it only moved two hexes--the Repulse wasn't that damaged. The game engine simply took over and countermanded my orders. If it's doing that, it may take me a while to do the extraction. I guess I need to watch for the game's gotchas. Can anyone confirm that this is a known bug?

I've been tracking the KB continuously for the last three turns. There were two SIGINT reports, and a search report. The Japanese emissions security is really sloppy. Do players know about this? Is it a problem for the Allies, too?

Troopsurge -> RE: Total Losses (2/8/2007 8:27:48 PM)

Was the TF launching search aircraft? Launching search aircraft can reduce the speed of a TF but a reduction to two hexes seems extreme. Also, if the TF had destroyers or other ships low on fuel that needed refueling, the speed might have been reduced from that too.

No and no.

The Repulse did take some additional damage.

12/25/41

Aircraft from Formosa spot and attack some merchantmen trying to run supplies to Manila, they are sunk but some supplies are probably unloaded. Kido Butai sinks CL Perth and DD Le Triomphant. Japanese aircraft attack Tarakan and Kendari while allied aircraft miss a few japanese ships. I-164 hits and sinks AK Dayak near Batavia.

16th Division and the forces in Malaya continue battling allied troops, achieving little success. A japanese paratrooper platoon drops on Taytay and captures it

String -> RE: Total Losses (2/14/2007 9:47:44 PM)

12/26/41

I-156 sinks AK Bantam. Ise and Hyuga bombard Singkawang during night and Kongo and Haruna by day. Japanese bombers from Ambonia torpedo three transports at Kendari. Bombers from Kuching damage an AP near Muntok. B-17E's from Kendari hit an approaching AP with a 500lb bomb. The other, numerous, attacks by allied airpower are ineffective.

A Japanese ASW group heavily damages dutch sub SS KXV. She sinks later in the week.

Combat northwest of Kuantan and at Lucena continues. Japanese paratroops drop on Johore Bharu and almost rout the three british base forces there, a lot of transports are damaged by Flak. Japanese attack on Cagayan fails. Troops there settle in for a long siege.

Japanese forces capture Taiping and Butuan.

String -> RE: Total Losses (2/14/2007 9:57:59 PM)

12/27/41

Japanese begin landing at Kendari and Tulagi. A lot of air attacks on Japanese shipping by allied air power, all attacks miss.

The enemy finally yields at Lucena and the base is captured. More reinforcements are dropped and Johore Bharu falls to victorious japanese paratroopers, cutting off a large part of the malayan army from Singapore. The allied troops northwest of Kuantan are routed by victorious japanese troops. Japanese troops also capture Shortlands and Lamon Bay.
