mikemcmann -> Unhappy with this poor performing game... (2/2/2007 9:25:18 PM)

I am quite unhappy with this game. I bought it two days ago, and spent about 8 hours off and on trying to get it to work, then stay working!

First off, the start up requires a software that needs to be purchased separately???? Indeo something. What is up with that?? Never before had that requirement from a matrix game.

Second, The intro itself crashes half the time.

Third, it is SOOOO SLOW loading! Dear god, why?

Fourth, how buggy can a game be? I installed the patch and still all sorts of issues from freezing after a detailed battle to bizarre graphic glitch after a turn end.

Fifth, detailed combat is so slow. The "fast slide" for units is absurdly slow still. I think the detailed game has promis, but it needs a bit of speed.

I could go on and on.... I own 90% of Matrix games and have yet to have one this buggy and irritating.

ANybody have any suggestions to eliminate these problems? I have a 2.8 ghz, 2 gig ram, 1 gig Nvidia card...so I know it cant be machine specs.....

Grrr..... 50 bucks down the drain it looks like....

Mike

Not sure what your problem is. My install didn't require any software to install. It runs fine on my computer and I don't even run it in low animation mode. I have the 1.23 version installed and I've only had 1 crash and that was after I modified some game files to make a modded scenario so I'm not even sure if it's the game fault or mine. I've played buggy software and this isn't even close. Maybe it's some stuff you have installed on your machine because I've played this on an old laptop when we went on vacation and on my PC at home with no issues. My brother installed it with no problems either.

You dont have to purchase that additional software, it is a free trial of a anti virius software, you are given the option of installing or not installing it.

As to the other items, I agree the load time seems very long, but Im not having any of the other problems you mention.

No, Indeo is a video codec, it's not the AV trial (though God only knows why Matrix included that - I moaned when I bought it but it didn't seem to bother anybody else).

Those who don't have the intro problem have the codec already, those who do, don't.  The good news is that you don't have to buy it (although a search gave me that impression too as it will take you to the Indeo site where they are selling what I assume is a developers version, or something).  The end-user bit you can download for free at http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/31d.html and sundry other free file type places.   That should sort out that problem, although the slow loading, like the rest of us, you may be stuck with.

mikemcmann,
As was noted for you, the codec issue is one that has nothing to do with the game itself. You can go to this thread to read more about it: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1312947.
That should solve some of what you're complaining about.

Also, you do know that there is a patch available for the game, right? That fixed the major known bugs. (There's always the chance that you've discovered new bugs, but since the game has been out for more than two months and has sold quite well and no one else is complaining about bugs, my guess is that it's just the codec issue, or else you haven't installed the patch.)

The load time varies depending on machine type, but the reason for it is that we've packed a TON into the game in terms of graphics and sound, among other things. The computer needs a lot of time to allocate memory for it all.

So, you should give the codec (and patch) a whirl and see if you're still having problems.

Downloaded the free codec and it seems to solve many of the problems. The game is much smoother now and I have increased my utility and happiness from the game [:'(]

Sorry for the whiny sound of the previous post, it was I just thought my hopes were being dashed by what appeared to be a great game.

Now, it looks like my desires are being fullfilled. I think I was just simply angry that I thought I had to buy a 16 dollar piece of software to run the game correctly. Thanks to those that posted the links for the free download.

Great game...lots of historical coolness.  Thanks for the help!

MIke

No problem. Glad it's working!

I believe the codec also is included with the last patch.
