Region 193 French Indochina is not shown as frozen on the map or in the rules but if you invade it as Japan it triggers war with the US. Is there something I'm missing?

Well, I guess if you attack any WA territory as Japan, you end up at war with the US.

That's right.

Wait until France surrenders, and it will automatically become Japanese controlled.
