Hello all,

One question I was always meant to ask, what's with submarines and the politically frozen sea zones? As Japan, I can get my subs to eg. Java sea, but I really can't move them afterwards. Not sure if it's in the rules, but it seems a bit odd anyway. I'd rather not be able to move at all in a frozen zone, unless I want to initiate combat.

Also, I've noticed that when I enter with a sub a frozen sea zone that's shared by an enemy TF, it won't let me move to the next phase, unless I initiate combat. I thought subs are exempt from the mandatory combat rules?

It's my understanding that there are special rules for frozen zones, e.g. that you aren't allowed to move out of a frozen zone in order to prevent exploits (like hitting somewhere where you aren't supposed to out of the blue). I guess it's the same for submarines and mandatory combat: The other player can't move supplies through the sea zone as long as your sub is there (without taking op-fire). I guess that's why you have to initiate combat.

I agree that it can be a trap for newbies though.

You should not use the Japanese subs till you attack the US/CW. What could you possible imagine using them for when you are only at way with China?

Um, scouting around the globe? Gathering info about Australia? Watch the convoy PH/SF? Getting in position ready to strike? This sort of thing.

The issue is that you may never "move through" a frozen zone, which includes moving in and then moving out the way you came.

You can move in to a frozen zone and then undo the movement, except that if you reveal something through FOW then you can't undo the movement. And then you are stuck, and forced to declare war whether you wanted to or not.

This is a problem, mostly for newbies who may not know of the issue. It is certainly adequate excuse to replay the turn, if you get unintentionally stuck in this situation.

Somehow this seems more likely to occur with subs, although that is really only a psychological issue (i.e. the way we tend to use subs) since it can actually happen equally with any units.

I personally wouldn't be opposed to exempting subs from the "can't move through a frozen zone" rule. It may make things a little more interesting. The subs can zip around and spy or whatever, but if they get caught on the wrong side of the frozen line then they may find themselves attacked by the WA and hence triggering an early USA DOW.
