jdkbph -> UV and SB Audigy issues - RESOLVED (2/11/2007 7:27:52 PM)

Hey folks. Long time UV player, first time... well you know.

I've had and played UV since it was released... version 1.0... but haven't played for a while. I decided to drag it out once again and give it a whirl with the latest updates and all, but ran into a problem. The game installs fine from the CD, and patches fine with the v2.5 (all inclusive) update, but when I launch the game I get the Matrix splash, the 2-by-3 splash, then a lock up. The music plays, but the game is definitely "not responding". I have to call up the task manager and kill the task to recover.

It's not any of the patches causing this either. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled v1.0 and found the same problem there.

My hardware has changed significantly since last I played the game, so I started doing to some troubleshooting. Turns out disabling my sound card in the Device Manager will let me get into the game. Of course I've done all the due diligence type stuff, (drivers, DXdiag verification/testing, shutting down unnecessary apps (including AV), etc.) but it's definitely the audio.

Now I've searched the web and Usenet as well as the forums here looking for a fix... and while I've found several reports that sound similar, no one has reported a solution that I could find.

Did I miss it?

Info files attached.

Thanks

In case anyone else has this problem, I'll post my "fix" here.

The problem seems to be with the intro .avi files located in the VIDEO sub-folder. I removed those files and the game now loads and plays fine with the sound card enabled. I'm not sure exactly why, and at this point I'm not really interested.

The reason I even looked at those files as the possible culprit is because I noticed that when I disabled the sound card, the game took me directly from the start up screen (start.exe I think) into the main game, skipping the intros. But with the sound card enabled, it went through the intros, then hung. Not sure why it did that, but it provided the solution.
