Magnum357 -> Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (2/20/2007 10:03:33 PM)

I had to reinstall a computers harddrive with Windows 98 SE, and I tried to run Max Football with the latest patch but I get the following error...

Run Time Error '91': Object Variable or With Block Variable not set.

I know the game works on the computer because I played it with XP, but I had to install Windows 98 on this Computer and this is the first time I have ever seen this error. Can Windows 98 even run Max Football?

Maurauders has it running Win98SE

Hopefully he can help you with that

Marauders -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (2/20/2007 11:26:14 PM)

I use Windows 98se on my main computer, because I play older wargames and educational games that do not like Windows XP.

I have been able to run Maximum-Football on this machine up to the current release, so the game should run for you.

Some Windows 98se nVidia drivers have problems with Maximum-Football, but the game should work otherwise.

Did you do a fresh install of Maximum-Football?

It is likely that Maximum-Football will lose Windows 98se support at the end of this build cycle (through Release 3).  That is because Vista will require files that are not supported by Windows 98se.  Microsoft is making their older products obsolete by releasing their new products, and their isn't much choice but to use their new products.

Hi.

The current version of the game does work on Win98. Some things you need to do to ensure everything is working are;

- The last step of the game's installation process is to 'install additional files'. Be sure both of these are checked and click next to isntall both. This will insure you have the correct version of DirectX, as well as install some system files that are required.

- Ensure you have the correct drivers for your graphics card.

- Ensure you're installing as an administrator (on win98 the person that installed the OS is the admin by default so this is likely already being done)

Failing all that, if you can give me more details as to when this error is presenting, I might be able to narrow it down a bit more. Is is a popup windows dialog box? Or is it a black screen with magenta text?

Thanks
David

David, the error occurs right when I click the "Play Maximum Football" button on the start up screen in Windows, not in the game itself.  Simply put, it won't even let me get to the intro movie screens.  The Error is a standard Windows Dialog box.

I'm pretty sure that I installed the "Additional Files" you described above.  I have DirectX 9.0c installed and have the proper Drivers for my Video card aswell.

Marauders -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (2/21/2007 9:12:38 AM)

Was this an install from scratch, or did you install it over the old files?

Magnum357 -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (2/21/2007 11:20:37 AM)

It was an install from scratch.

Marauders -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (2/21/2007 4:10:32 PM)

For some reason, if I install the v1095DR on a Windows 98se machine, I have had problems getting the game to run.

If I install the v1080DR and then the patch, I have been able to get the game to run under Windows 98se.

I don't know why that is, but that has been my experience.

Magnum357 -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (2/21/2007 10:44:55 PM)

After reading Marauders comment about using the Original version of MF (version 1080DR) I decided to uninstall and reinstall that version of MF to Windows98 SE.  Unfortunetly I still got the same error as before, but I also clicked on the Play Developement System and Utilities options in the startup screen.  I get the following messages aswell...

Runtime Error '430' class does not support automation or does not support expected interface

Not sure if that relates with the "Runtime Error '91'" but just thought I would let David know that apparently I can't access any of the options of the main Screen page.  Also, I did install MF in a slightly different Directory path compared to the Installation instructions, could that have any effect?

David Winter -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (2/22/2007 12:06:35 AM)

Hmm it sounds like the DBEngine.dll was not properly installed and registered with the system. This is not all that uncommon with Windows98.

You might try this;

click start->Run and type regsvr32.exe "<fullpath to game folder>\DBEngine.dll" and press enter (include the quotes)

you should get a dialog saying that the dll registration was successfull..

If it is, then try the game again... if the game still doesn't run, then I think there is something going wrong on the OS end...

Thanks

Marauders -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (2/22/2007 2:46:41 AM)

I have Maximum-Football installed on my D: drive, but all other folders are the same.

I re-installed from scratch just to make sure it works, and it does.  I have a driver problem with my video card, but that is an unreleated issue.

Note that with Windows98, the two videos do not bypass with the spacebar, so I renamed them to keep them from running through everytime I load up the game.

It sounds like you may be missing a .dll file. I had that happen some time ago. You may try to re-install Windows98 from the boot disk. Sometimes installing video drivers or updating Windows98 or Outlook can goof up the .dll files.

David Winter -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (2/24/2007 12:53:06 AM)

Can you tell me if the following file is on your Win98 computer?

DX8VB.DLL  (you can just do a file search but it's likely in C:\Windows\system32)

thanks

Magnum357 -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (2/26/2007 12:02:23 PM)

Yes, I checked the Directory you asked David, and the .dll file is there.

Magnum357 -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (3/18/2007 1:53:08 AM)

David, have you had any success finding out what my problem is with MaxFB and Windows 98 SE?  Or am I out of luck playing the game on this OS?  [&:]

David Winter -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (3/18/2007 6:52:57 AM)

Hi.

Others have the game working on Win98 so I am sure it can be made to work. Unfortunately, I can't diagnose the problem remotely. And it's a very old OS with a lot of quirks.

I would recommend WinXP.

thanks
David

Marauders -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (3/18/2007 11:46:12 AM)

Magnum,

I had trouble with some of the graphics drivers and missing Windows 98se .dll files.

Did you update Windows with the patches after the clean install?

Magnum357 -> RE: Can Max Football run on Windows 98 SE? (3/19/2007 11:18:30 AM)

I will have to check up on that.  I might not have the up to date drivers of Win98 SE, I'll look into it.  Not sure if that is what is causing the problem, but it couldn't hurt to try.
