TimoN -> AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (2/21/2007 9:56:58 PM)

In the middle of nowhere my carrier group got intercepted and the enemy managed put a fish into Junyo.

Can you guess which ships the enemy used to attack my TF? As you can see from the screenshot it says it was a surface combat so it was not a sub.

nice (for the AI)

ai cant really do much

very rare though

marky -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (2/21/2007 10:19:53 PM)

while torturing the AI is alot of fun( i speak from ALOT of or rather too much experience) fighting a human is more fun[:D]

cept when they surrender then the games over [:(]

PT Boat en route from PH to Canton?

scott64 -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (2/22/2007 3:46:33 AM)

The invisible Boise [:'(]

bbbf -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (2/22/2007 4:57:09 AM)

Nah, can't be Boise.

Every ship hasn't taken at least 30 shell hits and sunk.

bradfordkay -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (2/22/2007 5:46:11 AM)

It was the Takanami. They were going through a dry run on torpedo procedures and someone goofed...

99.99% sure the carrier survived.

Dili -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (6/15/2008 1:03:11 AM)

Incompetent TF Leader. Expell him to Tokio for Court Martial. The DD commanders that should be screening the force should get a long stay in dry too.

niceguy2005 -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (6/15/2008 1:10:32 AM)

I can easily see how this could happen because 1) the AI would think nothing of sailing a lone PT boat around the middle of the Pacific, without gas, and 2) the AI can peak and see your CVs, so if the PT boat is within range...voilla!

Carrier survived. I don't remember the exact damage, because it was so long time ago. Anyway even a small damage to carrier takes long time to repair. It really hurt.

Shark7 -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (6/15/2008 5:22:42 PM)

One thing about carriers, once they are hit, you can pretty much write off operations with them for the better part of a year.  It's really kinda rediculous that I can repair a BB in less than a month from 40 damage, but a carrier with 10 damage takes 10 weeks.

It's that wooden flight deck thing. The Brit carriers aren't too bad.

Bogo Mil -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (6/16/2008 11:40:10 AM)

Carriers usually don't repair slower than battleships. Put them in a large port with a good repair shipyard, and make sure no other (small) ships are repairing at the same port. If you still don't see repairs for several days, you might be hit by a bug. Do something with the ship (e.g. exchange the captain, or move it around a bit), and repairs should start again.

I seriously doubt that you have ever repaired a BB from 40 sys damage in less than a months time... [:-]

there´s not much difference between repairing BBs or CVs.

John Lansford -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (6/16/2008 5:02:15 PM)

Would this work?  I know it's gamey, but still:

Could you place PT boats out in mid ocean and just leave them there, sort of like semi-mobile minefields waiting on an enemy TF to stop on top of one?  If they don't move they aren't generating much in the way of detection values, and just 2-5 of them would be such a small number that they'd be hard to spot from naval search attempts.  Sure they would eventually run out of fuel, but so what?  They aren't moving anywhere, and if you wanted you could always send an AK over there to refuel and escort them back to a base.

Actually I did. BB Ise went into port at Singapore with 42 damage in the late part of march 42. By the end of April I had it down to 9 damage and sailed it back out into the fight, where it got torpedoed again and is now sitting at Singapore with 45 system damage. Only this time its not the only ship there, so its repairing much slower.

John Lansford -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (6/16/2008 7:14:57 PM)

If you've got absolutely no other ship with any damage in a major port with repair yards, either disbanded or docked, then I suppose it is possible to reduce the SYS damage from 42 to 9 in a month.  The port repair could knock one or two points off each day (assuming the proper rolls were made), and the shipyard could repair damage as long as there were more repair points than the ships' floatation value.

Having any ships with damage docking or disbanding along with it would slow it down, though.

It was by itself. It's now been sitting there a couple of weeks and repaired about 3 damage but now I've got a ton of DDs refitting there atm. It might not have been exactly a month either, probaby a little longer, but I know I sailed it out to bombard Batavia on 4-30, and on 5-1 it got torpedo'd again. Plus I overly supplied Singapore when I took it, and I did manage to take the repair yard intact maybe that helped.

I also had a Naval HQ there, so it appears to have helped.

Haruna on the other hand has been stuck at Hong Kong since January (I'm now in May) and still at 19 system damage. Granted it was in a bit worse shape though, having eaten a mine and some CD fire. I believe it went in with like 62 damage and around 50 flooding IIRC. Either way, its been out of action quite a while.

Lesson to be taken. If you want a ship repaired in anything near a timely fashion, send it to a repair yard with a HQ and no other ships there.

IMO, Singapore and HK are poor ports to repair major ships. For the large ships to repair 1 point of damage, the repair points of the port need to higher than the durability. IIRC, Singapore and HK have small repair yards in stock and it is difficult to get the repair point to be higher then the durability.

John Lansford -> RE: AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack (6/16/2008 11:17:18 PM)

Heh heh heh.  In my game, Haruna is sitting in Truk harbor, as in, sitting on the bottom.  This weekend I sent a force of Allied CL's and DD's to raid the harbor and flush out some merchants that were there, and ran into Haruna, Nagato, Oi and Chokai in a TF coming in from the north.

In the melee, two Dutch CL's put a torpedo each in Haruna, then Le Fantastique hit her three more times.  Lost Leander to Nagato's 16" guns, but the rest got out although with a lot of damage.  Those French sailors will be well honored once they get their battered ship back to San Francisco...

Perhaps, but the old quote 'Any port in a storm' fits here. After all, when the ship is taking on more water than it can pump out, tying up to any pier is preferrable to the inevitable end otherwise. TBH, I was actually surprised that I got Ise back when I did, I know you usually stick them into a port and wait a few months to use them again. That was certainly not the normal way things work.

Anyway, I've got a ton of ships there now and once the flooding gets repaired, they are going to have to make that treacherous run back to the HI. And the sea around the PI are swimming with steel sharks atm...this is not going to be a fun repair transfer.
