KG Erwin -> OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/6/2007 4:30:12 AM)

For those of us who have to work, having a reliable work vehicle is simply a must. My 1998 Cavalier has done well for me. She's got close to 97, 000 miles on her, is paid off, and I think I can keep her going for well over 100, 000. I've had no major engine troubles (knock on wood) to this point. I keep her oil changed regularly and I'm gonna take her in a bit early for her 100, 000 mile tune up. New spark plugs, all filters replaced, etc.

I'm not a car freak, by any means, but I AM attached to my Baby Blue. She's had some minor issues, but I've babied her and she's been dependable. [;)]

LOL ---haven't you ever bought a car that ended up not worth what you paid for it?

Zap -> RE: OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/6/2007 8:17:06 AM)

I don't know if all americans will agree with me but for the most part you can get most american cars (nowa days to give you 100,000 miles of headache free driving. Its the accessories that go out and the do cost a lot to repair.
Like, power window motors, automatic door lock units, senors, and the like.

The motor and drive train will be reliable if oil is changed regularly as you have done.

I've got a 2002 GMC Safari van with 158,000 on it. The motor and trasmission is still good but I put a lot of money into keeping the little gadgets up and running.

VW Rabbit, 350,000 miles when we SOLD it!!! After it sat for the few months of a Buffalo winter.

The Cubans have cars from the 1950's that still look like new and run, go figure?[:)]

Twotribes -> RE: OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/6/2007 4:49:37 PM)

Buy Ford. Ford makes only 2 kind of cars... REALLY good dependable ones OR the worst lemon on the block. Buy new, and with in a couple months you will know if it is a lemon and can take steps to solve the problem.

morvwilson -> RE: OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/6/2007 6:25:18 PM)

One of the tricks I have found with car buying is don't buy the new engine designs! Buy the ones that have been around for a while. For instance I own a Jeep Cherokee Sport with a 4.0L engine. That straight 6 cyl. design has been around since the 20's! No recalls or bugs.

Also, before you buy decide what you are going to use the car for. If you need a solid truck to haul a lot of stuff, american is the only way to go (I also own a Dodge 2500 4x4 truck). If you are going to be driving around town most of the time commuting, I think japaneese cars are the way to go. (toyota, honda, nissan...) cheap and dependible (plus for about $3000 you can have the engine and transmission completely replaced!)

Another trick, get a print out of the car price from the internet before you go to the dealer. When I bought my dodge, one the car web sites had a new truck listed for 24k, I showed that to the dealer and his priced went from 36k to 29k in about 10 seconds, and that included some nice optionals.

..not wishing to throw a spanner in the works or anything, not even mentioning the relative* cost of petrol..

..* as in local hours worked to buy 1 litre..**

..** you'll note i didn't say one bad word about how 4 hours works buys one litro of petrol where i live, aren't i jussst soooooooo polite ***

Obviously alot of what I said does not apply to you white. My wife is from the Philipeans, I know how it is there. But on the other hand you could probably go to one of your neighbors and have them build a Mercedes Jeepne for less than I could by a new motor![:D]

Last time i was there I think it was about 20P/litre? Am I close?

Brolin -> RE: OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/6/2007 9:15:18 PM)

'99 MG F - not really dependable... in fact, every time i move it, something breaks [:D] - but hell, i love British roadsters.

My pushbike hasn't let me down once in 27 years.

Alby pimped my M39 and put it in the game.

IN a Junkheap challenge show they used a 20+ yrs old demolished one and the 2.5 liter diesel started running after 10 seconds. The chassis is next indestructibel too.

jwarrenw13 -> RE: OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/8/2007 2:27:51 AM)

We have two vehicles, both with about 110,000 miles on them, and both are going strong.  We intend to keep both for a while.  98 Jeep Cherokee and 97 Geo Prism (Toyota Corolla clone).  Wife and I have always kept our vehicles a long time and have saved a tremendous amount of money in the process that otherwise would have gone to car payments.

KG Erwin -> RE: OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/8/2007 7:00:14 AM)

After all this, we just spent $270 to get new break pads and an oil change for my wife's car (a 2003 Saturn). Damn. Now, the Saturns are great cars, but once the warranty runs out you're screwed on replacement parts. $150 for break pads? You gotta be freakin kidding me. [X(]

shunwick -> RE: OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/8/2007 9:17:48 AM)

I recently had to buy a new puncture repair kit for my pushbike - £1.25.  Still it'll probably last about 10 years so that helps with the budgeting.

Best wishes,

Kevin E. Duguay -> RE: OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/8/2007 2:16:05 PM)

Wife's Saturn  has 120,000 + miles on it. Runs great!!

Erwin, Go to another repair shop!![:D]

Terl -> RE: OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/8/2007 3:31:42 PM)

A nice Isuzu Rodeo with 105,000 miles and going strong and a back-and-forth to work car, Dodge Neon with 80,000. Like JW said, with both paid for and long miles we save a lot of cash. I am so tired of car payments. My wife and I swore no more payments. We are both in our early 50's and saving hard to retire.

Last break job I did was on the wife's honda minivan. I spent about $50 for the pads and replaced them myself in about 45 min. Disk breaks are incredibly easy to work on! Can't tell you how much I have saved over the years working on my own cars, but it has been alot![:)]

Procrustes -> RE: OT: Reliable Vehicles (3/8/2007 7:20:33 PM)

I've had incredible success with Toyota Corollas for years now.  My folks bought the first one I drove back in the late seventies - finally sold it with well over 200k on it, and still running.  I went through three more over the years - for my wife and two teenage kids - they also drove forever.  I've got a '98 Corolla now - first new car I ever bought - haven't yet had anything done except brakes, tires and oil chages.  Fairly inexpensive (as cars go), run forever, good in the snow, good mileage, good deals on used ones.
