XLegion -> HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/20/2007 11:03:41 PM)

Gil told me that my Beta Patch might not be working because I don't have an updated version of FLASH. Why did the game work before then?

What is FLASH???? How do I get it and update it??? What does it do???

Any information appreciated because I am getting at the end of my patience with this game.

You do understand what "Beta Patch" means, right?

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/20/2007 11:28:00 PM)

Ok, here is what I did.

I went to the link to install the Flash Player. I downloaded it, which only took seconds. I did the install and at one point it asked me what language I wanted. I chose English and then it began to install. I GUESS that it installed but I DON'T KNOW IT because it did not give me a prompt, a warning, a desktop icon or nothing. In fact I still don't know what the heck it is doing.

I then went an un-installed "Forge of Freedom" for the second time. I then re-installed it. I noted that the 'start up icon' that it creates on the desktop DOES NOT WORK.  I had to go into Windows explorer and run the file Forge of Freesom.exe to start the game.

I ran the file and while it was loading the music played but was all screwed up (I could tell it was the first version then) BUT it never finished and then dumped me to the desktop.

So. How can I fix anything when I can't even load the game? I have not changed anything on my computer since purchasing the game in December of 2006. In fact I was one of the first to do so. I will not do that again as I missed out on getting the manual too.

So, here it is about 2 months later and I still have yet to play a decent version of this game.

Help please.

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/20/2007 11:29:55 PM)

Yes, I do understand what a BETA patch is. But the BETA patch must have done something so the original game doesn't work either.

Gil R. -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 12:33:51 AM)

Uninstalling the game (which you've done twice now, by my count) was almost certainly not necessary, and might have caused problems. General Quarters had similar issues that may have been caused by uninstalling the game improperly; unfortunately, he's on vacation now so he can't tell us what happened and what he did to fix it. Did you uninstall by going to the "Forge of Freedom" part of your Start menu, or did you just delete the folder?

In another thread, Erik Rutins asked you to post your DxDiag file. This is very important as a diagnostic tool, so you should definitely do that. (Not being a technical sort, I can't tell you where to find that -- can someone else please?)

As for the icon, that's a minor issue, since you can create a new one using right-click.

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 1:07:08 AM)

I un-installed the game via the Control Panel in Windows XP. I sent Eric my dxdiag file but I have not heard from him. I will try and post it here.

Yes, I do understand what a BETA patch is. But the BETA patch must have done something so the original game doesn't work either.

That's part of the risk of beta. Believe me, I understand the frustration. But when using beta anything, you need to realize that beta code doesn't always just impact the program you're using. In can impact other things as well. Painful thing is it usually isn't an obvious thing or some of the previous testers would have seen it.

If out of your pain an installation or uninstallation issue is discovered and fixed, you can consider yourself a grade-A beta tester. You will have found an obscure issue and saved countless others the pain you are experiencing. Not much consolation when you're the one with the pain, but it is part of the risk and joy of using beta code.

ericbabe -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 3:37:15 AM)

Since you also had this problem with the original game files, it is highly doubtful that there is any issue with the beta version here.

quote:

I ran the file and while it was loading the music played but was all screwed up (I could tell it was the first version then) BUT it never finished and then dumped me to the desktop.

I don't believe we've had anyone else report that the music was "all screwed up" -- was it garbled, as white noise? Would you mind checking to make sure your audio drivers are up-to-date? We do get a crash-to-desktop on one of our clean-install machines when we forget to update the audio drivers to the most current version after a clean install.

Just to make sure my understanding is correct, FOF has never worked on your system?

EDIT: Oh, I see, the previous version did work for you. So audio drivers are likely not the problem. My guess is that there was a problem of some sort with all the installing/uninstalling, though why it should affect your music files isn't clear. Please describe the "all screwed up" music further, that might help.

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 4:47:20 AM)

Ok, let's try again.

I purchased the game "Forge of Freedom" when it first came out in December. I installed it and the game worked from square one. No major problems. The only 'small problems' that I was having WERE THE SAME ONES that everyone else was mentioning. ONE OF WHICH was the fact that the music was 'garbled' when loading up. Many people had this problem not only me.

Not long after, Matrix released a small mini-patch that CORRECTED this problem. I installed it and AGAIN the game worked fine. BUT, after a time I decided there was much about the game that I didn't like and wanted to wait for a more comprehensive patch that would fix many of the HISTORICAL anomalies that I did not care for.

OK, now we come to the BETA patch. I downloaded it. I installed it. And now NOTHING WORKS!. I DID NOT un-install the game nor change anything about my computer. The common denominator was the BETA PATCH.

Like many software developers the most common advice I get from them is to un-install and then re-install the game and this often works. Here it does not. I even checked the Windows registry files but I don't see any resident Matrix files for Forge of Freedom. (I have "Give me Liberty" and "War in the Pacific" and several other Matrix games THAT ALL WORK). So I'm not MATRIX bashing here. BUT, I am upset that months after I purchased a game that I thought might be really good, I can't even play.

What happens now is the game starts loading and I see the start up screen AND HEAR THE MUSIC just like it was in the first original game. But I never get to the game because it crashes and dumps me to the desktop.

I don't have a forgeoffreedom.ini file because the game does not start. Nor do I have any autosave files for the same reason.

Help, help, help.

MorningDew -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 5:01:55 AM)

Guessing you have from your comments, but have you tried:

1) Uninstall
2) Delete all files from where ever FoF was installed
3) Reboot
4) Reinstall

That said, more details might help. When you say "Nothing works", what happens? When you try to launch, is there an error message or any kind of message? Or just nothing?

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 5:57:33 AM)

Andrew: Yes, I have tried the un-install - re-install twice now. Deleting EVERYTHING having to do with the game.

This is exactly what happens:

1.) I click on the Forge of Freedom.exe file
2.) The Matrix Logos come on and play
3.) I hit "esc" so I don't have to watch them for the 100th time
4.) The Forge of Freedom screen comes on, the one with the paintings of Lee etc AND I can hear the music playing, although it is clipped. At the bottom of the screen I can see the blue icon bar which shows you the game loading.
5.) As it nears the end of the loading bar, say 20 to 30 seconds the game crashes.

That's it.

On mine I renamed the Music and Sound directories because I don't want to listen to music or hear sounds. I wonder if you did the same whether you could play. My guess is playing is more important to you than listening.

Using Windows Explorer, I renamed \Forge Of Freedom\Music to \Forge of Freedom\NoMusic and \Forge of Freedom\Sound to \Forge of Freedom\NoSound.

If you do this, does it at least let you play?

I will tell you this. Once you get through this, I'll predict you love the changes. The new patch is awesome. They really did a great job.

tevans6220 -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 6:53:15 AM)

Rename your Sound, Music and Video folders. See if that works. I renamed mine !Sound, !Music and !Video. Not having the same problem as you. I renamed so that FOF would load faster but there's always a chance that it might work for you. Couldn't hurt.

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 1:39:48 PM)

Thanks for the advice. I re-named all three folders "No Music" - "No Sound" etc...It loaded faster all right and dumped me to the desktop faster too. All a no go.

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 1:44:03 PM)

If it helps at all, I found that the "tutorial slide show" does work so that means that it is not Flash player. But guys, why would you accept playing the game with no sound. To me this is completely un-acceptable.

MorningDew -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 2:39:20 PM)

How about setting the NOSOUND option as well in the INI file?

**********************
* Low Animation Mode *
**********************
Users who have difficulty running Forge of Freedom on their computer can try to run the game in "Low Animation Mode." Open the file forgeoffreedom.ini. (This file is typically found in your Windows directory or in the ForgeOfFreedom directory. You'll need to run the game at least once for this file to be created.)

Add the following entry:
LOWANIM=1

Make sure there are no entries that read:
LOWANIM=0

To turn animation back on, either set the LOWANIM value to 0 or remove all LOWANIM entries in the forgeoffreedom.ini file.

*****************
* No Sound Mode *
*****************
Users may also disable all sound effects in the game to increase performance on their machines. Using the procedure outlined for Low Animation Mode, add the entry:

NOSOUND=1

to the forgeoffreedom.ini file. To turn sound back on, change the entry to NOSOUND=0 or remove all NOSOUND entries from the file.

ericbabe -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 3:10:10 PM)

XLegion, do you have a registry entry for Forge of Freedom under Matrix Games now that you reinstalled it?

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/21/2007 3:46:33 PM)

Andrew: Yes, there is a registry entry now for Forge of Freedom.

I noticed that my HPS game "Punic Wars" is also NOT WORKING. This is very odd and maybe related. ALL of my other games (that are even more complex) work fine. Such as ROME: TOTAL WAR which uses 3D graphics.

So. How can I fix anything when I can't even load the game? I have not changed anything on my computer since purchasing the game in December of 2006. In fact I was one of the first to do so. I will not do that again as I missed out on getting the manual too.

Did you miss the fact that we offered a separate upgrade to get the manual for those that ordered early?

I un-installed the game via the Control Panel in Windows XP. I sent Eric my dxdiag file but I have not heard from him. I will try and post it here.

Sorry, the internet here went out yesterday morning and was just restored an hour ago.

Not necessarily. Did you run the game right before installing the Beta Patch? If you hadn't been playing for a while, something else might have changed on your system that caused this problem and you didn't realize it until you installed the beta patch. The fact that the original game installation without the beta patch does not work is a clear indication of this. The patch does nothing but replace files in the game folder, so there's no way it can screw up your system or screw up your original installation before you've even reinstalled the beta patch.

My first suggestion is to upgrade your audio drivers. First, they are from 2004. Second, you've reported some sound issues from the beginning and if something got messed up here, it could cause the game to crash.

Second, update your video drivers, which are from 2005. Even if these drivers worked fine before, if something went wrong with them, an update will hopefully clear that out.

Finally, make sure that when you reinstall, you have turned off all background anti-virus or other security software. This is generally the #1 reason for a corrupted installation.

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/23/2007 9:39:31 PM)

Eric:

I have just updated all Medion drivers. Un-installed Forge of Freedom for about the 5th time.

Re-installed. Same symptoms. Crashes on load up.

The following DO WORK on my system

TALONSOFT - All Civil War Games

HPS - All games

ACTIVISION - Rome Total War - Gun

SLITHERINE - Legion - Spartan

SONALYSTS - Dangerous Waters - 688 Attack Sub - Fleet Command

ATARI - Civilization

SIERRA - Caesar IV

LUCASARTS - Outlaws

I-MAGIC - All Great Battles of History games
MATRIX - War in the Pacific - Crown of Glory - For Liberty - Tin Soldiers - Caesar

and many others, I could go on and on and on

WHAT DOES NOT WORK

FORGE OF FREEDOM - Period

I think the common denominator for a problem is 'Forge of Freedom' - wouldn't you think???

Look at the games THAT ARE running on my system perfectly. You can see that my system can easily run many different games from many different manufacturers with no problem. INCLUDING AT LEAST FOUR FROM MATRIX ITSELF!!!

I have installed and un-installed and cleared out the registry on this game now at least five times!!!!

Apologies for the frustration but it is definitely there and real. This experience is undermining my whole confidence in any future Matrix products. Also can we get this thread where it properly should reside - in Forge of Freedom problems NOT Flash player!!!

Barrold -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/24/2007 3:13:49 AM)

While I understand the frustration of not getting the game to work, the seemingly unique nature of your problems should lead you to wonder what is wrong with your system rather than what is wrong with FoF and Matrix Games in general.  Well perhaps not wrong, but unique in the equipment or setup of this system.  Looking through your system file, my suspicion runs towards your audio card and your symptoms don't lead me to lessen the suspicion.

Perhaps Eric can provide some feedback on whether the C-Audio dealy-do is known to cause issues or not.  Maybe you could switch the card out with a more generic one and see if it behaves the same.

Good luck in resolving the issue

ericbabe -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/24/2007 3:18:49 AM)

I don't doubt that FOF is not running on your system.  However, since FOF does run on a clean-install XP home edition system with SP2 the problem is probably not one involving FOF running on XP but seems more likely to involve something idiosyncratic with your system.  I can't just "fix FOF" -- I need to figure out what it might be that is particular to your configuration.  I spent an hour this morning comparing the file list you forwarded to us with the master list, but so far haven't found anything that looked suspicious with the install.  If you'd like, I can send you a version of the .exe file that will trace its progress during game load so we can get a better idea where during the load it's crashing.  All the loading sequence is fairly homogenous: it initializes a chunk of memory, finds a file on the hard drive, puts that file into memory, repeat.  If you're crashing 75% of the way through this, chances are that the problem isn't with the process itself but with one of the files or with the allocation of the block of memory at that point, or something similar.

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/24/2007 3:53:54 PM)

Yes, by all means send me that file. At this point I am willing to try almost anything short of 'format C'

XLegion -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/24/2007 6:10:22 PM)

OK, un-installed the game for what I believe is the 7th time now.

Something changed but it is still not working. Now the game loads until the blue line bar at the bottom is finished or at least it is at the end. But the screen just stays there and nothing happens. After about 3 or 4 mintues of this I hit CONT-ALT-DEL to get to task managed to see what the game is doing. Task manager says "running". Which of course it isnt'. But, giving it the benefit of the doubt I "switch to" Forge of Freedom and the screen is still there.

Of course, I then after to CONT-ALT-DEL again to "end task" and get out of the loop.

What now?

As for the suggestion that someone made that I should be looking into another sound card. Well, that is so absurd I will not get into it. My configuration seems to work for every game and manufacturer EXCEPT Forge of Freedom, so I think that is a logical place to look.

Erik Rutins -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/24/2007 6:37:56 PM)

Please be patient until Eric sends you the exe he discussed. I realize this is frustrating, but frankly the problem is unique.

There is no need to uninstall and reinstall the game unless the experts tell you to. There is a greater chance of causing further problems than curing existing ones if you keep doing this, not to mention that it's simply a waste of your time.

ericbabe -> RE: HOW DO I UPDATE FLASH!! (3/25/2007 7:57:29 PM)

Hmmm, the fact that the behavior changed after you uninstalled/reinstalled the game makes me wonder whether there's a problem with the way that the files are being copied to your harddrive.  Have you scanned your harddrive for bad sectors?  I will try to get the trace-exe to you on Monday and hopefully we can figure out exactly where in the process things are not working.
