The Almighty Turtle -> The Great Squandered Oppertunities in the OOBs (3/20/2007 11:59:35 PM)

OK than, I have noticed people mutilating the Czechslovak/Slovak Oob to put in more German units. Now, I do appreciate the effore that goes into it, I do. However, I believe that people are overlooking a pristine oppertunity for Battlers and Scenarios builders alike: The Spains. The Nationalists do not come into existence before the Civil War starts, save for some pathetic support units. and the Communists/"Republicans" do not exist PAST the civil War. So instead of mutulating an oob that has plenty of promise for historical and hypothetical engagements, why don't you cannibalize the major gaps in the Spains to use them instead? Maybe I am overlooking something, and I am by no means editor material, I was just giving my ideas.

This is simply because the Czech/Slovak OOB had plenty of left-over slots.

Really, the "squandered opportunity" lies in the widely-held belief that the Germans should have two separate OOB sets, one for pre-war/early war and the other for mid-war/hypothetical post-war.

If Michael Wood ever decides to revisit SPWaW, this is in the realm of possibility, along with additional weapons slots for individual units (a la "Close Combat").

(Uh oh, here I go again) [;)] Take for example the 1944 "F" series USMC 13-man rifle squad (IMHO, the best squad TOE that ever was*): slots should exist for carbines and/or SMGs, M1 Garand rifles, M1 w/grenade launcher, BARs and hand grenades. This could be expanded further to include a demolition kit or flamethrower. So, at least five and possibly six weapons slots are needed. By doing this, fewer unit slots would be necessary. Of course, ammo loadouts would also have to be adjusted.

* The squad leader and three four-man fire team layout is still in use today.

Indeed,I would like to see a few more weapons being carried, as there was no way a 10 man unit of the US Rangers would not carry everything, from thompsons to BARs to Carbines to the "normal' M1 Rifles, along with grenades, etc unless they had been in the field.

I would also look at a few more OOBs, such as possibly Sweden (I remembers kicking the living $@@$@ out of the Wehrmacht with those guys in SPWW2) an actual Norweigan ARMY (which underwent major reforms in the war, was rearmed with Western Allied equipment, and was fully modernized by the early postwar) The Swiss (fighting the next generation of Swabians in 1940?) The Portuguese (who were a major force in this period, and fighting broke out between them and the Western Allies during border disputes over the boundires of their colonies and the Western Allied ones (The Belgians in Congo, the British in South Africa and the Sudan, the French in French North Africe, and the Italians in the newly defunct Italian East Africa, though the Portuguese got their butts handed to them).

Seperate OOBs for the Viet Mihn and Algerians (if only to shock my family that I am taking the side of the fronsay against them), the Israelis (The Palacheniks in the War and the nascent Israeli Defense Force taking on the Arab Leauge in 1948 and 1956) The Arab Leauge (because Germany, Russia, Most of the Eastern European nations, the Chinese, the Spanish, and the VM need a break from being killed off once in a while) And than possibly Turkey, for a Russo-Turkish War in 1935 or a Western Allied intervention to breach the Dandrelles for some urgent reason, and a North Korean OOB, and possibly an Indoneasian one (the Indonesian War of Independance against Holland, in which the latter were aided by the Commonwealth.)

And that with a few new Megacampaigns (there are what? 99 spaces? that space is BEGGING to be filled up!!!!) and improved ship handeling for possible Naval Battles?

I can appreciate that it is hard, and I know I probably do not have what it takes to do it, but these are like a "Christmas list" of what would be ideal-ideal. I wish they could all be done, but I know that it probably is not likely. However, that is just my two cents. Maybe we could start a petition for it?

All good suggestions. Listen, a few of us have a direct line to Michael Wood, BUT, he is involved in other projects.

He has, in the past, expressed some interest in eventually returning to SPWaW. Personally, I'm not gonna push him. He already has a full plate.

However, IF the community got together and IF he was convinced that enough interest still exists in the "old warhorse", he MIGHT consider revisiting it.

I WILL say that Mike offered invaluable help in seeing the Enhanced Version come to fruition, so I'm not inclined to "pester" him about it.

Indeed, I understand, as it would likely kill the poor man. However, the community has accomplished much without higher aid, and since it is larger, we could afford to absorb more fatalities[:D]. It would be an unenviable project to work on, this much I know, but the rewards could be worthwhile.

On the Czech OOB issue: what you failed to consider is that the National Characteristics/Ratings for the Spains are much lower than those for the Germans, and would make any German units in them perform worse. The Czech OOB, OTOH, has the same or very similar Characteristics/Ratings as the Germans, making it the best OOB to use for additional units. There is plenty of room in it, BTW, for both extra German units AND the native Czech units. In the Enhanced DV Mod, the Czech OOB has a wide variety of units, including pre-annexation regulars, occupation resistance units, and post-war Soviet-bloc units.

Unfortunately, without access to the code, there will probably be no "split" OOBs, nor will there be any additional OOBs added. And any other changes will best be done as "Mods", using the ModSwapper program.

Ok than. Thanks for saying. I do know that we have one split OOB, the France/Free French One, so I was just wondering.
