Detachments? (Full Version)

I plan to test out in a game what these are exactly, but it appears as though hitting this button removes part of the unit's strength and leaves it behind (with a 'man' graphic in the hex it was left in). Does anyone know their actual game effect? I assume the enemy has to attack the hex before moving through it...

Pretty sure the only thing detachments do are slow movement through that hex.
