Im thinking of starting an AAR but cant find where I read how to capture screens while I am playing.

Can someone give me an assist? I apologize for the repetition..I know Ive read it here..twice..and made a mental note of where..but.. well..the mental notes just arent what they once were..

I've used a few, the best i have come across is King Kong Capture which I now use regularly.

Its free and available at :

If you then have an image modification programme you can do anything.

Or you can just hit the Print Screen (PrtScn) button on your keyboard to capture the screen to the clipboard. Then just paste into your favorite graphics editor (MS Paint for the masochistic) if you want to crop, resize etc. Works for any Windows program.

Alt-PrtScn just captures the current window......

(Works a treat for inserting graphics into MS Word documents too!!!)

Yes you can, but then its captured on your clipboard and you have to immediately go and do things with it if you want other caps from the game. With king Kong it will take multiple snaps. save them all, then let you pick them up and do things at your leisure.
That's how I got the shots of the CVL Shoho recently.... five snaps, then cropped and put together. I've made the pics smaller for here than on the AAR, but something like that would not be easy using the printscreen command.

As for MSpaint... have a look at Paint.net (its a free replacement for MsPaint), much more in the way of functionality.

Yes it all depends on your own level of knowledge of digital manipulation and how much time you want to spend on the screenshots.

I use the King Kong, Snagit and Photoshop CS2 - so they are far from the simplest.... but if you enjoy them they are fun.

I use a program called MWSNAP3 for my screen captures. Just do a google search to get the web site. It is a free download.  I switched to it because it doesn't hog memory when it is not running and is very non-invasive. It also has a range of capture options, and can reduce file KB size when you save it. Also leaves no unwanted "pic take with prog X" on the snapshot like some programs.

Thanks a lot guys. Its not as straightforward as I was hoping, but I will play around with it and figure out what works best. I just really need something pretty simply.

It really is that simple.


  • When you are ready for a capture, just press the 'PrtScn' button.
  • To get to the windows desktop, hold the 'alt' key down and press the 'Tab' key
  • Open MS paint. Usually found using the start button under Start/<'All Programs' - for XP users>/Accessories/Paint
  • Select 'Edit/Paste' from the MSPaint menu bar. Your screenshot should then be visible
  • Select 'File/Save As' from the MSPaint menu bar to keep a permanent record of your masterpiece.


Sorry about the Micky Mouse approach but that is all there is.

It should work on all Windows machines without the need for additional software.

Just remember to save your screenshot in .gif of .jpg format or you won't be able to upload your pictures onto the forum...

P.S. I almost forgot......

  • hold the 'Alt' key down and press the 'Tab' key to get back to your game. (You may need to do this several times if you have a few programs running)

Wow.. excellent. simply laid out. And the Mickey Mouse approach works best for me if its dealing with computer "stuff". Im not completely illiterate but.. I should know more than I do. Thanks again. Im going to try it now, mess it up, and come back and ask for the Minnie Mouse approach.

i think Mandrake is working on something like that - he did an animated GIF that showed a globe with Japanese flags popping up all over it. [8D]

Animated GIFs or Movie files????? It really depends on how much animation you want.

Animated GIFs are simply made by taking a series of images (screenshots) and stringing them together sequentially. Easy to do but hard to do well!!

You won't be able to do this with MS Paint but a quick Google search on "animated gif editor" came up with 1,390,000 hits, a lot of them freeware!!!

Give it a go, its not hard and you might be surprised how it turns out!!!

You won't be able to show movies on the forum - just animated gifs. You can do tricks to allow people to download movies, but they won't actually display.

Really important thing to bear in mind when using a screen capture program is ALWAYS save them in bitmap format. You'll need to resize the screenshots for the forum, and if you resize a jpeg, it's almost certain to get blurry.

Take screenshot in bmp format -> resize in bmp format -> save as jpg.
