m5000.2006 -> Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 3:26:44 AM)

Interesting comparison here ---> http://militaryhistorypodcast.blogspot.com/2007/02/ancient-rome-and-modern-america.html

I've been wondering if there are any other possible similarities. Loss of Military Strength is particularly interesting. Although, I'm not sure if it's exactly true. War in Iraque isn't popular in the USA, but does that mean it is a nail in their coffin. I think not. Also, is the USA really 'overextended' militarilly?

One of the problems Ancient Rome had was their strange reluctnace to use horsemen on a large scale, Roman armies relying strongly on infantry. In other words, they would refuse to make progress sticking to their traditional way of waging wars. It seems not to be true of modern US Army.

I much prefer "Ancient Rome." The user interface is much simpler. "Modern America" was released with too many bugs, and the patches have not helped.

NefariousKoel -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 8:46:32 AM)

Rome didn't have nukes in spades to back up their excellent military.[:D]

LMAO at that paster...very good. But I can see this post going downhill...again from an innocent initial post.

Ursa MAior -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 12:01:23 PM)

Wonder when people will start REALLY think about why is it so?

What patches? [&:]

Terminus -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 1:42:40 PM)

Not brain patches, thus proving Mr. P's point...

Never... It's too depressing...

Twotribes -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 4:46:10 PM)

"modern America" released in 1992 was total loss, the patches in 94 96 98 went a little ways to make it "playable" But the big rework in 2000 followed by patches in 2002 and 2004 helped a lot. Now the 2006 patch has taken the game back down the path of obselecence and irrelevance.

..liked the patches till '98..

..the later 'unique super-power' ones, nahh, nafff, the basic program just couldn't cope..

anarchyintheuk -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 5:16:39 PM)

Athens was always a better comparison anyway.

anarchyintheuk -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 5:18:12 PM)

Edited for repeating myself.

Problem is/was that the patches after 2000 are incompatible with most computers.

m5000.2006 -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 9:42:12 PM)

hmmm, i didn't know there were 2004 and 2006 patches, thought the 2003 patch was the last one...

ASHBERY76 -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 10:05:18 PM)

America will be seen as just a short flash in the pan compared to the might of Rome in future history.

Terminus -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 10:18:09 PM)

No, because Americans write today's history, so Rome will eventually be forgotten...

mjk428 -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/23/2007 10:18:54 PM)

There surely are some similarities but this is not a very well-thought out comparison.

America: Avian Flu, Obesity
global warming

[:)]

BTW, there are much worse things than to be likened to Ancient Rome. It's many steps up from being compared to Nazi Germany, which is the standard pinhead comparison.

Anyway, carry on. People with no arms laughing at the guy who's lost a few fingers.

My vote is Rome.
Rome was a powerful Empire bent on conquering the known world and basically achieved it's goal.
USA is a nation that doesn't want airplanes flying into it's skyscrapers, it doesn't look like it will be able to stop that.

By the way another worthless thread, started on a game company's forum, with the purpose of giving sneaky little cowards an excuse to blast the USA with cute little snide remarks.
Good show Matrix.

whoo - looks like somebody's riding the cotton pony this week...

well, it's a kind of hyde park forum, people write about everything here, e.g. yeltsin's death, stinking harley-davidson service or giant robots in ww2, it's not only devoted to games...

besides, if someone intends to blast the USA with cute little snide remarks, they just will, even if this thread hadn't been started...

the purpose of my post was rather to start an interesting discussion on the basis of the above 'article' and see if people agree with it, as i find some of its statements absolutely hilarious [:D]

and it has nothing to do with Matrix...

Americans make today's history, unlike some impotent little European countries that have already been forgotten.

Saying that Americans make today's history is a little like saying that the family dog makes a pile of crap in the middle of the living room.

The people who are really making history right now are the Akhbar brothers, Allahu "the Fuse"" and "Crazy" Al.

Tomorrow? Do the concepts "no tickee, no raundly" and "one flom corrum A and one flom corrum B" ring a bell?

Terminus -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/24/2007 1:00:51 AM)

I suspect it probably doesn't in Doggie's racist little mind, Mr. P...

Speedysteve -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/24/2007 1:04:26 AM)

Errrr every nation and it's people make history today............

Terminus -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/24/2007 1:10:30 AM)

Yes, but remember, only America really matters...

Wonder if Doggie's head is going to explode once China and India finally surpass the West, including Festung Amerika...

I apologize to my American friends on this forum. I know that 99% of citizens in the United States are ordinary, good people who just want to live their lives in peace and don't wish harm to anybody. Unfortunately, extremists like Doggie and his Steakhouse groupies shriek so loudly that they drown out everybody else. Equally unfortunately, they're incapable of grasping the fact that other people can disagree with them and still not be their mortal enemies...

Giving this type people the silent treatment isn't going to work, because they'll still continue shrieking, deriving orgiastic joy from hearing themselves lord it over the rest of us.

Doggie -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/24/2007 3:44:00 AM)

You don't have any American friends on this forum.  You don't seem to have any friends at all.  I think that's your problem.  It's probably due to the absurdity of a pasty white retard from Denmark claiming to be a victim of "racism".

The only one getting the silent treatment is you,  as you're a known troll.

m5000.2006 -> RE: Ancient Rome vs Modern America (4/24/2007 3:52:19 AM)

sorry for my post, it seems i opened up a Pandora's box...[:(]
