Believe it or not i never heard of him until recently.I'm pissed at my teachers for not telling us about him. They could have cut five minutes out of telling us about LBJ"s Great Society or Gloria Steinman and the ERA over the three years that we would learn about them at the end of may(Our textbooks ended with Nixons impeachment)To say...You guys want to see/hear something cool?[8|]

Doggie -> RE: One giant step.. (4/26/2007 6:55:35 AM)

I first heard about him in elementary school in West Virginia, circa 1964 or so.  About the same time we were learning about West Virginian Chuck Yeager.  They were always mighty proud of that boy back in west Virginia.

JudgeDredd -> RE: One giant step.. (4/26/2007 11:02:27 AM)

Neilster -> RE: One giant step.. (4/27/2007 6:46:09 AM)

From memory, he had a leaky glove that made his hand swell up massively.

Cheers, Neilster

I read a thing where he cooperrated with the NVA.I don't give a **** what his life was like afterwards..That one instance made him a ****ing hero..Who here would jump 20 miles..with zero garuntees?

No one.

pasternakski -> RE: One giant step.. (4/27/2007 10:07:01 PM)

My understanding is he refused to break, but also refused to wallow in tortured self-emotional flagellation. He was known for his cheerful demeanor and faith that sooner or later he would go home. 307 days later(over the course of two calender years) he did.

The USAF allowed him to stay on until 1978(when he was 50) and so far as I know he was not stripped of any clearence so I doubt he broke.

On the other hand even if he did I agree he was still brave and the fact is confronted with the Hanoi Hilton damn near everyone broke to whatever degree....except maybe Stockdale.
