I had a great little book about WWII carriers called TITANS OF THE SEAS, but I misplaced it.
I want a really good history of carrier evolution and ops in WWII (as this one was)..
I like both historical detail and good combat narrative.
Any suggestions?[8D]

From the US side "The First Team" series is very good (by Lundstrom) - 2 volumes, from start of war to Midway, and from Midway to end of Guadalcanal Campaign. That only gets you to 1943, though.

Yup the problem with wanting one book - is I don't think there is one book that will really meet YOUR expectations.

Lundstrom is good though is focus is USN Carrier Fighter organizations. But he has a lot of detail on the battles from both sides.

Peattie's "Sunburst" is good from the perspective of the DEVELOPMENT of the Japanese carrier arm. But no combat narratives in this one, go to Lundstrom for those.

Why not replace your lost copy of Titans?  Try this link: http://www.abebooks.com and search for the book's name, using author Belote.  I came up with 30 available copies at prices ranging from $1 to $8.50 + shipping, and my own experience of using abebooks to find long out-of-print titles has been good - got my own copy of Adm. Reed's Bullets Beans and Black Oil shortly before it was published on the web[:@].

I too liked Titans and wouldn't be without it.  Gave me a lot of respect for Ozawa Jisaburo's performance at Philippine Sea.

Thank you all, guys..Local Yokel, I am an optimist. Befor I replace what you and I both know to be a crucial book to have, I hope to find it hidden in my book shelves.
Eyes weaken with age, yuh know?

I have two books on the subject.  The first is "The Aircraft Carrier - An Illustrated History" by Bernard Ireland, and the second is "The Aircraft Carrier Story 1908-1945" by Guy Robbins.

The first book covers the story from the beginning up to about 1980.  I found it a quite enjoyable read.  A good mix of operational history and developmental history.  The second is a bit drier, but covers the topic you're looking for in more depth.  It focuses on Japan, Britain, and the US, bouncing back and forth between them.  The second book is also a more recent book.  I think it was published in the late 90s.
