Ok, being somewhat of a nut, I always start my gaming experience by playing the AI at the hardest level possible - just to get a feel for getting my tail kicked...needless to say, uh, not so good an idea at Full General level with the historical economy versus the North...

I have been adjusting the settings and it appears the things do the following:
-Difficulty - diff level is a net decrease on your income, however, it's a fixed negative adjustment based on diff. level.

-Power - seems to adjust things at the source by %.

I read in the manual, I know, I know, heresy right, reading...ok, the manual says the AI gets certain combat bonuses at higher diff. levels. I like this, but, as I set the difficulty level up, I lose income, etc., but, it's not a % adjustment on the total. It seems to be fixed at Full General at -80 Money, etc. etc. - regardless whether I produce 100 money or 200 money, I lose 80 to difficulty.

Wouldn't it make more sense for it to be a % of total income? Am I missing something - is there any way to get the AI to have its combat bonuses without the fixed negative adjustment to the economy.

No, the income adjustments are part of the difficulty settings.

Gray_Lensman -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 3:56:29 AM)

So which difficulty setting is the "tactical" neutral setting for the HW AI?

I've been playing at the First Sergeant level, yet there are adjustments in the "Nations" screen for money, iron, etc. When you load up at the Sergeant level, these same adjustments are all zeroed, making it seem as though the "Sergeant" level is really the AI neutral level.

Walloc -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 4:17:41 AM)

yup Grey_lensman.

If u ever wana check the HW bonus at different, difficulty just check the attack reports.
They are listed there and do a comparison to original number to give approximate % advantage.

Kind regards,

Rasmus

Gray_Lensman -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 6:29:22 AM)

If I may ask Walloc, just how can I tell using the attack reports what the difficulty modifer(s) are? I see a bunch of numbers in two columns, that might make sense, but at the moment have no meaning for me.

Walloc -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 4:50:33 PM)

Sure Grey gimme 15 mins to set up and an example and ill post pic's and be telling long and boring stories [:D]

jkBluesman -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 5:24:45 PM)

Maybe we will not get a Ralegh guide, but a Walloc guide someday. That would be great.

Walloc -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 5:33:08 PM)

Ok, Grey_Lensman,

Small tutorial to Attack reports. See pic at buttom. Im limited to 1 pic per post so i might end up doing 3 post with pic's in rapid responce depending in how caught up into this i get. (i didnt tired today)

Situasion in question is me US firing(unit with blue marker and white star) on CSA column with the little crosshair over it.
Difficulty level in question is Major.

First base. Before any thing a die is rolled between 1 and 100. Obviously this will make a huge factor some times why ppl get results that makes them go: Blip Blip Blip.
Hey some times u overshoot targets, it happens.

Roll is 53 and there are 2895 men in the unit. 53*28.95/18=85.24. Equal to the 85.

Ok next line, no i dont find all this obvious. The first row of numbers are result AFTER change/modifier of the given line. Second number is the change modifier in it self.
Base of previous line 85.
85+51(change)=136(result)

Ok now if we look at the difficulty for major level. 51/85*100=60%
In other words at major level for each and every fire any unit takes in all og ur game it counts as it had 60% more men in it. Difficulty modifiers in HW matters!

2895+60%/100*roll 53/18 = 136!

Next line and last ill do less i get more request atm.
Base per previous line is now 136.
Enfield has 125 power at range 2. Yes u have to know this it doenst tell it self. Power 100 is base for calculation.

Result(first row) 136*1.25= 170
Change(second row) 136*0.25(remember weapon base being 100)=34

If u got more questions, some thing is unclear or i left some thing out, i tend to do. Please fire away.

Hope it helps,

Rasmus

Walloc -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 5:44:36 PM)

No pun intended but i love the fact that Donnie plays at Full general, i have no idea what the difficulty % is there but its prolly huge. Yeah that makes for some ass kicking.[:D]

Kind regards,

Rasmus

Walloc -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 5:49:45 PM)

P.S I would like some comments from ppl if they find the description and my use of math is understandble. Would be nice to know if an expanded guide to attack reports could go in that direction or if its just to confusing.

Kind regards,

Rasmus

donnie_1974_texas -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 5:51:02 PM)

difficulty % at full general is 100%.

Gray_Lensman -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 6:06:43 PM)

Thanks, big time Rasmus, still clear as mud, but if I run thru it a few times with my own battles I may just be able to make sense out of it. I still don't see where the 143 or 105 final numbers are coming from. It's like the attack report is not finishing the entire display of the calculations.

Kind regards to you also.

Drex -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 6:13:10 PM)

Thanks Walloc for taking the time to explain. Its above my head but I have an inkling of whats going on in the background.

Walloc -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 6:13:22 PM)

No the report isnt all there. Ill post pic of that then.
Was trying to limit my self to the difficulty modifier.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 6:23:14 PM)

Just keep in mind that the numbers in the left column are the running total and the numbers in the right column are the adjustment to the running total made by each listed modifier.

Walloc -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 6:31:50 PM)

Sorry guys, guess i shouldnt become a math teacher[:D]

Rasmus

Gray_Lensman -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 6:46:42 PM)

Thanks again, I wanted to see the end results 143 and 105, so I could work backwards with the example and hopefully understand it. Appreciate your taking the time to post this for me and the rest of the interested forum members.

Walloc -> RE: Difficulty Settings (5/22/2007 7:01:57 PM)

Making comments to the end result.

How can a line firing into the flank of column take 40% more casulties. US line taking 143, CSA Column taking 105

Well first off US line consists of only 1500 men, half of CSA unit. Had it been same size as CSA column end result has been roughly 200 men intead of the 105.

Had we removed the difficulty modifier for CSA ak AI their end result had been more like 70 men.

So 200 vs 70 men for a line firing into the flank of a column and the line had used MP. Equaling time used of turn. Without that result is more like 220. So in all 3-1. On a orginal roll of 51 vs 53 so basicly the same. Oh note that R.E Lee in person was directing the fire of the CSA column with out that its closer to CSA result of 40-50 vs 220 so 4-1, 5-1.
In short firing into the flank of an enemy column with a line pays off big time. Use it!

There usually are explanations for the results ppl see. That said i dont agree with all of the modifiers or size of them and i wouldnt expect every 1 else too either, but it does make it easier to discuss if ppl understand whats going on and point issues out from that.
Not to discourage ppl with problems from raising them even if they dont fully understand whats happening. They might very well still have a case.
I love the fact that almost any where in FoF information are open to ppl.

Kind regards,

Rasmus
