on a side note to that... I went to San Diego last week and crawled all over the Midway while I was there. I told my brother-in-law (who is one of the Hatfields by the way) about it and he told me how his Grandad was on the midway in '45...and that his Grandad's cousins is none other than Chuck Yeager... I'd love to bend Grandpa's ear someday.[8D]

Ahh english in America.... Walk into a store in Philadelphia and ask for a soda and you receive a bottle of Coca-Cola....drive 6 hours west ...walk into the same type of store in Pittsburgh and ask for a soda and you receive a Coca-Cola with Ice cream in it... You are then told you have to ask for a "pop" in pittsburgh to receive the plain coca-cola. When you return to Philadelphia and ask the clerk where his pop is and he asks why you want to speak to his father.

Pauk clarified his "official" language post in the same post..he meant predominant language. m10bob.. the Native Americans were defeated, but I certainly wouldnt add "fair and square" to the sentence.. making and breaking 450 treaties, many in bad faith to begin with isnt generally considered "fair and square".

I actually speak "Yankee" as all my Southern associates tell me. [:D][:D] Years ago, I was working in northern England and found out that I could NOT understand that brand of English. [:(] However, I took a long weekend vacation to Norway to sightsee and I could easily understand the lady on the tour bus around Bergen (they speak American more than English).

Well, as an American whose family landed here in 1607, in what eventually became Rhode Island, I can tell you this - in open conflict (open warfare) the concept of "fair and square" is meaningless. 'We' settlers were fighting for survival and dominance against the 'natives' who were doing the same - and there was no 'Second Place'...harsh but reality. If the Amer-Indians could have killed off all the white settlers, they would have (and they woke up and tried it a time or two in New England/Virginia in the 1600s), and we did likewise... we won. It may surprise you to know that by 1860 (before the American Civil War/War Between the States)not only were American Indians expelled to the Great Plains and West, but even there white settlers already outnumbered Indians by 10:1 in the West. Broken treaties? Yeah, by the bundle, ...perhaps not something for a modern society to by proud of, ...but 'Real Politik' trumps everything, And since my ancestors survived and I was born as a result - I'm not terribly sorry...nor do I carry a sense of guilt over it. As 'Animal Mother' said in 'Full Metal Jacket'... "better you than me".

The turkey and bald eagle were candidates for obvious reasons (turkey for thanksgiving as it saved the first settlers and eagle for being strong and fearless predator - king of the skies)... Dutch/Flemish and Afrikaans are in fact dialects (or better: descendants) of Middle Low German, but they are not "Northern German" dialects.

nobunaga wanted to point out that "Hochdeutsch" is the written german and its spoken as its written in the books and that this 'should' be the german you learn as a foreigner. However, it depends where the teacher is from...... We still have here in north germany another language called "Plattdeutsch" - but that is no dialect, it is a complete different langage. In Plattdeutsch for example 12 = twelv. (written in Platt). off to remove the dutch trucks as well the Autobahn 7 now. [:'(] about the vote / the language thing : I think its a myth too but I heard it qute often as well. Some kind of a story a grand ma tells the baby about america I guess.
