on a side note to that...

I went to San Diego last week and crawled all over the Midway while I was there.

I told my brother-in-law (who is one of the Hatfields by the way) about it and he told me how his Grandad was on the midway in '45...and that his Grandad's cousins is none other than Chuck Yeager... I'd love to bend Grandpa's ear someday.[8D]

Ahh english in America.... Walk into a store in Philadelphia and ask for a soda and you receive a bottle of Coca-Cola....drive 6 hours west ...walk into the same type of  store in Pittsburgh and ask for a soda and you receive a Coca-Cola with Ice cream in it... You are then told you have to ask for a "pop" in pittsburgh to receive the plain coca-cola. When you return to Philadelphia and ask the clerk where his pop is and he asks why you want to speak to his father.

Uh, Mikemike,

Could you use a lower level English so us native English speakers can understand what you're saying?[:D][:D][:D]

People who speak English better as a second language than I do as a primary... it's a crime, I tell ya! Sheesh, ain't nuttin sacred, no more?

P.S. This is actually a backhanded compliment. Your English is outstanding. [&o]

rogueusmc... Pauk clarified his "official" language post in the same post..he meant predominant language.

m10bob.. the Native Americans were defeated, but I certainly wouldnt add "fair and square" to the sentence.. making and breaking 450 treaties, many in bad faith to begin with isnt generally considered "fair and square".

ny59giants -> RE: OT: english language (5/9/2007 5:40:59 AM)

I actually speak "Yankee" as all my Southern associates tell me. [:D][:D]
Years ago, I was working in northern England and found out that I could NOT understand that brand of English. [:(] However, I took a long weekend vacation to Norway to sightsee and I could easily understand the lady on the tour bus around Bergen (they speak American more than English).

Well, as an American whose family landed here in 1607, in what eventually became Rhode Island, I can tell you this - in open conflict (open warfare) the concept of "fair and square" is meaningless.
'We' settlers were fighting for survival and dominance against the 'natives' who were doing the same - and there was no 'Second Place'...harsh but reality.

If the Amer-Indians could have killed off all the white settlers, they would have (and they woke up and tried it a time or two in New England/Virginia in the 1600s), and we did likewise... we won.

It may surprise you to know that by 1860 (before the American Civil War/War Between the States)not only were American Indians expelled to the Great Plains and West, but even there white settlers already outnumbered Indians by 10:1 in the West.

Broken treaties? Yeah, by the bundle, ...perhaps not something for a modern society to by proud of, ...but 'Real Politik' trumps everything, And since my ancestors survived and I was born as a result - I'm not terribly sorry...nor do I carry a sense of guilt over it.

As 'Animal Mother' said in 'Full Metal Jacket'... "better you than me".

Hi all,

i'm doing research about USA in revolution and post revolution era and i need references (links, etc) how english become 'official' (or better to say primary) language in the US.
I'm refering to famous "German lose out to English by just one vote?"... but it seems that this could be a myth...

i would appriciate any inputs, info links, thoughts etc!

I never heard of this before...

What I remember reading being close was a vote between eagle and turkey for the USA amblem... [:D]

I am not joking.

IIRC there was just one vote (or few votes) difference when USA national amblem was voted in Congress. The turkey and bald eagle were candidates for obvious reasons (turkey for thanksgiving as it saved the first settlers and eagle for being strong and fearless predator - king of the skies)...

None other than Ben Franklin was the main proponent of the Turkey as the National Symbol...............

quote:

"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

"With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country....

"I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

--Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to his daughter

Can you tell us more about german/austrian dialects, and how they relate to "high" german?

I'm not a language specialist, so what I can tell you is not the whole story. "Hochdeutsch" or "High German" or Standard German is how we Germans believe the written language should be correctly pronounced. I needn't tell you that hardly anybody outside the media and the stage really speaks a clean High German. The people in the Hannover area think they do; we others think there are issues with their "st" and "sp" diphtongs.

High German is most closely related to the North German dialects (Niederdeutsch or Low German), which are spoken in the coastal plains area of Germany from the Polish border west to the Netherlands - Dutch is originally a North German dialect, although the modern Dutch will vehemently deny this. There are a number of other dialect groups, for instance the Allemannic dialects spoken in Southwest Germany/Alsace/Switzerland (of which the Palatine dialect - and its transatlantic derivative Pennsylvania Dutch- is a part), the Bavarian/Austrian group, the Rhenish dialects and others.

This is not completely correct,
actually there is no "Low German", its called Middle Low German and it is a seperate language (not a dialect!) that is not understandable for somebody who speaks modern Standard German as modern German did not descend from Middle Low German (its actually closer to Middle High German).
Dutch/Flemish and Afrikaans are in fact dialects (or better: descendants) of Middle Low German, but they are not "Northern German" dialects.

Thou shall not mix up Dutch and German!

Dutch references to Netherland, well, more precisely Holland, and the Dutch as well as us Germans will take offense in mixing this up. [:D]

What you meant is not Dutch but Deutsch

P.S. I hope there are enough smilies in this post to indicate that the offense is not all that serious. And now off to kick some Dutch caravans from our Autobahns [:'(]

Oliver Heindorf -> RE: OT: english language (5/10/2007 12:14:35 AM)

nobunaga wanted to point out that "Hochdeutsch" is the written german and its spoken as its written in the books and that this 'should' be the german you learn as a foreigner. However, it depends where the teacher is from......

We still have here in north germany another language called "Plattdeutsch" - but that is no dialect, it is a complete different langage. In Plattdeutsch for example 12 = twelv. (written in Platt).
off to remove the dutch trucks as well the Autobahn 7 now. [:'(]

about the vote / the language thing : I think its a myth too but I heard it qute often as well. Some kind of a story a grand ma tells the baby about america I guess.
