It only appeared to zoom out a little. I went back and checked and saw that it was an optical illusion, encouraged by my expecting it to zoom out. I don't know if it will affect anyone else this way, but if you scroll from Virginia slightly upward so the Penn border comes in view, it gives me the sense of a slight zoom-out. Eric says only the minimap zooms. I guess this has to go on the Wish List.

I have only played the AACW Demo and liked it, but maybe it is a lite muddled.

One thing that is very importent to me is the music and sound.
So which game has the best music and sound[&:]

The only website to rate both games specifically in terms of sound, gamershall.de, gave them the same ratings in the Sound (7/10) and Atmosphere (9/10) categories.

FOF uses a good number of Civil War-period songs performed by the 5th Michigan Regiment Band. (Go here to learn more about them: www.mi5th.org ) AACW uses a similar reenactment band, from North or South Carolina, as I recall.

For FOF's tactical battles, in addition to using multiple sound effects for gunshots and other sounds of battle, we hired professional actors -- one of whom had a small part in "Full Metal Jacket" -- to speak and shout dozens of authentic combat expressions and quotes.

I'll let the players opine on whether they have preferences; these are the basic facts of the case.

I turn the sound off and play my own in Media Player. It's awesome! [:)]

Me too. Some B.B. King, Allman Brothers, and a bit of bluegrass sure does help with the thinkin'.Hmmm...look at all that beautiful southern music. Country, Jazz, Southern Black Gospel, Blues, Rock-a-billy, Bluegrass, Zydeco, Southern Rock, Tex-mex, Dixieland Jazz.....

Love the Zydeco. Somethin' bout the accordion and washboard together that just takes the blues away. On my way to Louisiana soon to get my fill of Cajun food, swamp fishin and zydeco. Can you say crawfish boil? MMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

I hate Crap, I mean Rap. Love Southern Gospel, Contemporary Christian, Classical, Folk, Bluegrass, Dixieland Jazz, but Blues not so much. Zydeco I think I have heard it, accordian and washboard, yeah maybe. [&:]

When I'm playing games I listen mostly to music I have copped from EU2 and EU3 (Europa Universalis 2 & 3), Age Of Wonders, and other games. [;)]

Isn't it kind of hot and humid to be going down there in August? [:o]

Well it's a little warm here. 98 with 85% humidity. Finally gettin a bit of rain but it is going to be real humid then. I said washboard but should have said rub board. That is worn around the neck. I plan on takin many pictures. Maybe I'll post some.

85% humidity is high! It is 100 here with no more than 10% humidity as this is the high and dry desert. Real dry. [:)]

We Yankees also have MoTown! And I don't think the South can really take credit for Jazz because it's origins are from African Americans! [:D]

I have used the Gettysburg soundtrack when I played Sid Meiers Gettysburg and that was great I remember. The thing is that games often has bad music...

I like the music in AACW much better. The flutes in their music are excellent. There isn't enough music though as it seems sparse.

However like I said before, I play my OWN music if I want music. I don't buy games with a single consideration to the music it has. I couldn't care less about the music in a game.

How's that? [:D]

Okay, fine, even though I'm obviously biased, I'll answer the question myself: the music in both games includes roughly the same playlist of Civil War songs performed by two excellent reenactor military bands; in addition, AACW has sound effects in the strategic game that FOF does not have, while FOF has sound effects and actors' voices shouting "Aim low!" and the like in detailed battle. Thus both games are quite good in terms of music and sound.

So is most music from the south. Did it ever occur to you that you can be a southern black and indeed very influential on the common culture and music of all the races? Being a proud southron isn't about race, it's about culture. One that has been intertwined between the races for centuries. We borrow from each other quite a bit really.

I love greens, but when I am north I usually have to go into a 'soul food' joint to find them. What one from the north considers a black food, I just think it food.

And let us not forget which flag flew over the slave ships.[;)]

Oh, and Gil, I guess I would really have to play AACW a bit before I could rate the music, but it doesn't hold my interest long enough to have noticed. Sorry.

Edit to agree that you do have motown. I dig the motown also. When I say southern or northern I do not do so to be devisive. We compliment each other very well.

I am begining to think some of you guys go back almost as far as me. I remember when we would await the arival of, a new Avalon Hill game (Like one every year or so).
I'd read and reread those manuals and set the game up and try to play it then wait for the errata (pages and pages) to come out and then you have to read more pages. (SIGH) ah the good old days....
The kids are right. I had a friend who had a copy of some flight sim and he had no manuals and tried to figure out how to land the planes and crash every time. His son who was 7 or 8 watched him try to get them planes on the ground. Well he went to get something to eat and came back in 20 minutes to see his son landing them planes as easy as you please.....Just keep pushing them buttons till something happens. :-)

Once again Madgamer has to leap into the breach! I can't play with that music pounding away in my ears. As far as battle sounds they all sound bad and make my head hurt :-). The worst game for just plain loud and mind numbing had to be WitP. So in general I just turn it off and play in silence or have the TV on. Just put it down to me being old and strange.

Yeah, those were the days. I got most all Avalon Hill games as they came out and collected several years of the General magazine.

Music Track, we could put on the 1812 overture or Wellington's Victory, or of course hum and sing patriotic and military songs (playing solitare of course) as much as we wanted.

All kidding aside though, I would love to see some of the old classic AH games faithfully re-created for the PC.

The desire to play board games is still there but I don't have anyone to play with and I really was never that good at learning from the written page vs. a computer gqme where I can not cheat (due to not understanding the rules) and could try different things over again till I got it right.
I have an old friend in WI who lives almost 600 miles from me and we would travel back and forth several times a year to play board games and later PC games. The board games today are almost as hard as some of the computer games and the learning curve would be very long for me. All of this does not stop me from thinking about the games of my youth.

I'm glad to hear you say that the board games now are hard. I just put Russian Campaign back in the box. I got frustrated with ALL there is to remember and calculate when just trying to take a frigging turn. [sm=sign0003.gif] It reminded me of why I like PC games, even though I am tired of patches for patches, firewalls and Trojans, and buggy software. Still this machine plays a better game any day than a physical bored game. Pun intended.

600 miles is a long ways! You must be great friends, that's good. Friends like that are hard to find. [:)]

Larry, don't give up on boardgames. One of the aspects that I had a hard time adjusting to when I turned to computer games was the lack of human interaction. Of course as one gets older and friends move away and get married, just finding the time to get together becomes more difficult. And that is where computers shine, as you already know. Plus the A.I. and no more chickens knocking your cardboard chits everywhere.

Yet nothing beats seeing your opponents face as you lay waste to his 'well thought out plans'.

Watching a grown man act like a child - $ Priceless $

Maybe you should try a boardgame of lower complexity to ease you into the genre. Also, there are free virtual boards where you can play many games over the internet. Matrix now has rights to the most popular one called Vassal, as far as I know. That said, lately all I ever play are computer games.

But as far as the original question goes, I turn off the voice acting sounds during DB's because they come out kind of loud compared to the other sounds and it bothers the Miss'. See Gil, we are on topic.[:D]

The table makes ALL the difference! When I was in high school and college we had a group that used to love to try to play Highway to the Reich. It covered the entire Market Garden campaign at the company level. There were over 2000 chits as I recall and the map/board for that sucker was 8 feet long! Sometimes it was just fun to lay out the maps just to admire the audacity of it!

Since it was difficult to find space to keep a monstrosity like that set up for the extended periods required to play it my friend and his dad made a custom table to hold the map. The table was setup in the garage and would sit on three or four saw horses. But the best part was that the table was actually suspended from the ceiling! When our gaming session was over we would pull a rope attached to a set of pulleys to raise the table up to the ceiling where it would stay until the next session!

Needless to say, this worked out great until the day his 6 year old brother decided to try to swing from that rope hanging from the ceiling. [sm=00000018.gif]

Its not that I really wanted to give them up but even if I had someone to play with I am not sure I would as the games I love are the complex ones. I just do not have the time to set one of them up as I live in a mobile home and my cat Eli would love to jump up there
(talk about chickens scatering everything asunder). Very few simple games attract me. There is oddly a few of the simpler PC games that I like and even keep a dual 98SE & XP Pro system so I can play them.
Besides this there are the things like line of sight, surounding units and comand rules that are just not that easy for my old 66 year old brain to want to figure out:-)
In fact I have a very large colection of war boardgames some of which according to sine things I have read are quite valuable. I to have a large colection of SSI mags with and without games, and many other various mags and games. One of these days I am going to put the whole lot up for sale on EBay :-). No for me there is no going back PC games are what I love and I have a BUNCH of 98 games I would love to sell to if anyone is interested.
