Dont think they will be using this one in combat! [:D]

Rune Iversen -> RE: French Military Test Fires Anti-Tank Missile (5/13/2007 2:21:38 AM)

They are wearing CADPAT. Which marks them as french speaking Canucks.

Zap -> RE: French Military Test Fires Anti-Tank Missile (5/13/2007 5:29:02 AM)

It needs just a small adjustment.

gunny -> RE: French Military Test Fires Anti-Tank Missile (5/14/2007 6:07:57 AM)

and thats why we don't let them go to Afghanistan

Marauders -> RE: French Military Test Fires Anti-Tank Missile (5/14/2007 6:36:21 AM)

Those are Canadians.

That is the new anti-anti-tank-crew missile.

Marc von Martial -> RE: French Military Test Fires Anti-Tank Missile (5/14/2007 12:13:31 PM)

I bet someone crapped his pants in that little incident [:D]

Actually Canada has served in largish numbers in Afghanistan. Of course their Government needs to get its head out of a certain nether region and properly fund the military.

Canadian forces are also well established as neutral peace keeping forces and provides personnel for U.N. missions.

How so?  Canada spends about the same percentage of its GDP on the military as most industrialized Western nations and other NATO members.

Have you had your head buried in the sand the last couple years? Canada's navy is so underfunded most of their ships can not put to sea. The ground forces are using equipment from the 1960's. They had to lease armored vehicles because theirs either don't run or don't exist.

And I agree Canada does support peacekeeping missions world wide AND has supported the fight in Afghanistan. They said they couldn't commit ground forces to Iraq because of those commitments.

There has never been a FRENCH CANADIAN battlegroup that did a tour of duty in the total 4 years that Canadians have been fighting in that war. Out of Canada's 3 infantry regiments, 1 of which is soully French speaking, only the English speaking regiments have served at the Battallion Level.

It is believed if a French speaking Quebec based battallion took casualties at the rate the canadians have thus far it could lead to succession within Canada, Although there have been a company at most of French Canadian infantry serving in perhaps a security role.

End of story,

Your point?

gunny -> RE: French Military Test Fires Anti-Tank Missile (5/14/2007 9:36:11 PM)

Point is..... they are finally going to get a chance to prove their mettle very soon.  The first French Canadian battlegroup is due to deploy in Kandahar soon. This is going to be somewhat political internally for Canada.  (earlier they did serve in Kabul true).

The butt of the joke originally related to these specific guys having the misfire..... The follow up comments eronously thought I was referring to no Canadians serving in Afghanistan. Not true, just the ones in the little AVI file that started the thread. See what happens when ones get too politcally jaded for their own good.
Nuff o that. [>:]

11Bravo -> RE: French Military Test Fires Anti-Tank Missile (5/14/2007 10:06:09 PM)

Something is not right about the video...
The camera man pans left before the launch and frames the view of the ground where the missile will fall about 30 seconds ahead of time. The launcher is mostly off-screen to the right this whole time and during launch. If this had been intended as a successful launch, we would have missed the action. Instead we are treated to the best possible view of the fallen missile by a camera man who was supposedly surprised by this rare event.

Twotribes -> RE: French Military Test Fires Anti-Tank Missile (5/15/2007 3:08:48 AM)

I don't see it that way. The way I see it is he wanted to see the missile leave the tube.

SMK-at-work -> RE: French Military Test Fires Anti-Tank Missile (5/15/2007 4:21:26 AM)

Haven't the Canadians just anounced purchase of 100 Leopard 2A6's?  Not quite penny-pinching......

Why do you have to start with an ad hominem personal attack?  Just state your point, and get on with it.

And their shores are at risk from what invasion?  Canada is the largest country in the world, geographically, without any militarized borders.

That may be so, but the question remains if they spend less than most of their NATO partners, and they don't as part of their GNP.  Maybe the Canadians would rather spend their tax dollars on other things.

Neilster -> RE: Poorly equipped forces (5/15/2007 5:55:01 AM)

My step-brother, who was in the Aussie army sent me this...

Cheers, Neilster

SMK-at-work -> RE: Poorly equipped forces (5/15/2007 7:34:34 AM)

I'd like to point out that in fact that AT missile was 100% effective as a deterrant - there were no tanks within it's range!![;)]

Kevin E. Duguay -> RE: Poorly equipped forces (5/15/2007 9:31:53 AM)

I have never seen anything like that before!! Looks like something out of a Woody Allen movie.[:D]
I think the camera man left something in his pants.[:)]

Arctic Blast -> RE: Poorly equipped forces (5/16/2007 4:10:19 AM)

That is a bizarre video.

As for the Canadian Forces, they're FINALLY getting some proper transports in the form of C17's, new Hercs and some Chinooks, as well as a couple new supply/transport ships. Now, if they can replace the trucks they're using now, they can actually get around, which had to be priority one.

They HAVE just announced the purchase of over 100 Leopard 2A6 tanks to replace the Leopard I tanks they've been using. They're also getting the first M777 howitzers (I believe 4 are already in Afghanistan). The biggest issue now is not only recruitment, with a LOT of members coming up on retirement, but also training. Too many trainers have been sent overseas on missions, leaving enlistees who have been accepted twiddling their thumbs for long periods of time.
