Zap -> Origins (5/17/2007 12:39:52 PM)

I was wondering why all the major gatherings are held out east or the Midwest.
Is'nt California or Arizona a good place to hold an Origins type event?

I can't believe that there are not enough players out west to draw a good crowd?

Well, in the last four years there was "Gen Con So Cal". But not this year anymore.

Lack of visitors made the SoCal part of Gen Con a losing deal.

OH yes, I remember those, now!

Well I have to include myself as a no-show. For reasons of work.

This news really makes it appear that we players out west are not supporting the hobby very well. Or, that there are'nt that many as as out east or the midwest. So, if I want to go to a Origins type event I will need to travel. If its in New york I'll pass just don't like New York.

"Origins" in Columbus, Ohio and "Gen Con" in Indianapolis should be your goals to see one day. If you are a gamer and have not been there you missed something. People come from all over the world, no kidding.

General Quarters -> RE: Origins (5/18/2007 5:39:33 PM)

Yes, I went to one a few years back. It was the first time in my life I had played games as much as I wanted to -- like 16 hours a day three or four days in a row. I did well enough in Stonewall in the Valley to leave with a prize gray cap with three stars. Got to talk with John Tiller, I think it was, about the Civil War game he was demonstrating. And was inducted into the marvelously sinister Diplomacy. I thought it was the best game ever, and it played to my strengths as a gamer, with one big exception: I couldn't bring myself to stab a good ally. No guts, no glory. I got married again and goodbye to long weekends with nothing else to do! But if you're still footloose, go to one of these 'Cons.

I'm married and I attend 2-3 cons a year - I'm not saying you should put it in your prenuptial agreement but still ...[;)]

So is that an excuse or what? Where is the problem with spending a long weekend alone away from wife (and even kids)? I mean it is not that you have to do it every week [;)]. Unless you girl has you on the chain [;)][:D]

Oh, no. I'm 'whipped!

..are we being a tadge Americo-centric or what here ?..

..ok, we may have invented public-access wargames, cf HG Wells, a little known writer who you probably haven't heard of, he also wrote a poem about a white man's burden that you still don't understand if you've even read it, but even so.......

..it may surprise you to learn that there is a world beyond the borders of the good 'ole USA..

..and some of us speak english..

..[:'(]

Zap -> RE: Origins (5/20/2007 4:48:07 AM)

No I'm not. I think you may be reading something into what I have written thats not there.

I was simply thinking that California with its population (20million or so) would have enough players out of those 20,000,000. I was wrong. They all must be surfing then.

Rooster -> RE: Origins (5/20/2007 5:03:03 AM)

Columbus has become the new California.  Just ask the cows.  [:'(]

KG Erwin -> RE: Origins (5/20/2007 5:07:43 AM)

Now, hold on. I took the whole family to Origins in 2005, and we had a good time. That's the trick. There's something for everyone there. Even if they don't attend the convention itself, there's other stuff to do in Columbus ( believe it or not). We all have pleasant memories of that family trip.

As for me, I got to meet Dave Heath and Bill Wilder and spent a bit of time with a few of the faithful. I also added to my game/book/T-shirt collection. It's time well spent.

GalacticOrigins -> RE: Origins (5/25/2007 6:12:03 AM)

Origins
Argh, I can't swing the cash for 2 conventions, so am skipping Origins this year. I only made one, Atlanta in, um 1990?

Gen Con
I went in 1989
Was supposed to go in 1992. Had leave forecasted from USAF for 13 MONTHS. Cancelled due to piss-poor manager. So, it has been a long time since I have gone to a con.
I will be in Indy in August this year, YAY! [:)][8D][;)] [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

G.O.

HansBolter -> RE: Origins (5/25/2007 2:04:18 PM)

I still miss the Avaloncons that were held in Baltimore.
