Dear player and former player,
After 10 years of OC I  Have decided to call it a day. There will be no active organization from my side with regard to a new game.
However I am always open for an activity like playing Gettysburg with two teams just contact me.
The below game is, btw still ongoing and no result yet seen.
The pages are left as they were.
Thank you all for  for 10 years of amazing, educational and above all exiting wargaming.

Does Matrix have an official standpoint on an idividual modifying a scenario? I can see how some scenarios can use some modification, and there are great benefits to us due to the work of people like Silvanski. I've read some other posts that make analogies to other types of legal precedents. But what does Matrix say?

Telumar -> RE: House Of Cards 1945 - TOAWIII mod... briefing preview (9/29/2007 5:20:35 PM)

As long as noone has any commercial intentions i can't imagine Matrix has anything against it.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: House Of Cards 1945 - TOAWIII mod... briefing preview (9/29/2007 5:27:59 PM)

That's what I would think. And the 'getting the designers permission' part would just be out of common courtesy.

sPzAbt653, Telumar, Silvanski (in no particular order),

I suspect that Matrix would not involve themselves in it since they are not hosting the scenarios. I don't know where Silvanski is planning to release them but the owners and operators of Rugged Defense, Wargamer, and Gamesquad etc might have something to say on the matter. Silvanski, it might be worth approaching them to see what they think.

As far as I am aware, the lack of commercial interest has nothing to do with it. Mr Kolley's apparent disapearance has nothing to do with it. Even Mr Kolley's death has nothing to do with it (for at least 25 years (I think)). Copyright is copyright.

I am genuinely sorry to bring up the issue since I would like to play these scenarios myself. I just don't want to see Silvanski get into trouble.

There have been no lawsuits in the Great Harpoon Database Scandal but that hasn't stopped the Harpoon community splitting up into multiple hate-filled factions. I don't know this Mr Kolley from Adam but it is always possible that he is lurking in the background just waiting to make everyone's life miserable.

I wish I had a better answer.

Best wishes,

Silvanski -> RE: House Of Cards 1945 - TOAWIII mod... briefing preview (9/29/2007 9:48:35 PM)

Fair points...

As a matter of copyright, yes there is something but these scenarios are non-commercial...
Getting the designer's permit is only natural and in the mod's notes I give full credit for the original design.

Not being able to get in touch with a designer however is frustrating ...

I've got here two playable scenario mods... scenarios which are almost 10 years old and a previous TOAW version but are solid because of their original design. Their PO however was quite rudimentary.
This upgrade/mod gives them a new lease of life.

I'll be holding them back and ask around at RD etc what their view on the matter is...

shunwick -> RE: House Of Cards 1945 - TOAWIII mod... briefing preview (9/29/2007 10:23:06 PM)

Silvanski,

Don't get me wrong, I hope it all goes well and you certainly won't get any problem from me. I just thought I'd better make sure you understand the potential problems.

Best wishes,

As I recall, there's language in at least the original Matrix releases barring any claim of any propriety rights to any designer of any scenario.

So legally, you would seem to be safe. Morally, I'd say you've done all that can be asked. You've tried to find this guy and he's fallen off the face of the earth. I'd say put something to that effect in the briefing and consider your duty done.

Sorry -- I should have said the original Talonsoft releases. Those said the opposite: that scenario designers gained no rights to any scenarios designed using OPART. To the extent that anything a software maker may claim affects the rights of those using the product to create something else, it seems to me that Silvanski doesn't have anything to worry about legally.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: House Of Cards 1945 - TOAWIII mod... briefing preview (9/30/2007 6:06:09 AM)

Nice! Legal jargon! My meager education reads it to say that the 'modder' can claim no rights to the original design. And we know Silvanski doesn't do that.

I looked for something on the Harpoon forum but didn't see it. I didn't sift thru everything, just looked at topic headings.

ColinWright -> RE: House Of Cards 1945 - TOAWIII mod... briefing preview (9/30/2007 8:44:55 AM)

Actually, I'm just trying to lure Silvanski into releasing his work. Then I can turn him in and get the big bucks.

Bucks? From what? It's costing me bucks... the crates of booze and bags of popcorn and chips I consume while toiling away on these mods[:D]

On a more serious note.
In my opinion legal trouble might arise when it concerns a scenario included in the commercial release of TOAW and it's patches...
But the scenarios I handled thus far are non-commercial, freely available in the various depots and were designed under discontinued versions like A Century Of Warfare.
Did you know that GTD and HoC are almost 10 years old...

I ask for permission to put my mod in the public domain, with full credit given to the original designer, TOAW version the scenario was designed under and explanation of the changes I made ...
So far I haven't come up to a "njet" ... au contraire: Ben Turner (AWW), Tane Woodley (AF 1914), Todd Klemme and Oleg Werner (RW 1941-1944) kindly approved and clarified details in their design which puzzled me... again a big thanks guys!

In the case of the Kolley scenarios I assume that the disclaimer may keep me out of trouble...
If Mr Kolley should emerge and disapproves of seeing his scenario being manhandled and thrown in the public I'll respect his wish... no problem with that...

The original scenarios have their own merit.
What I (try to) do is improve their playability vs the PO cuz I wanna play'em myself.
[sm=Evil-210.gif]
Other changes are either personal taste, cosmetical (like map changes) or to improve playability in different areas.

I don't think I'm wrong when I assume that most players battle it out vs the PO (we need to post a poll about this subject somewhere)
That's why I like to share these scenario mods ...
And they're for free, just like the originals... no need to come by and drop off truckloads of (Belgian) beer [:D]

There still are several older interesting scenarios I wanna play but can't cuz the PO is not quite up to the job... so... keep watching this space [;)]

Exactly... full credit to the original [sm=bow.gif]
which remains available ...as you see on Rugged Defense my mod is only added alongside the original, as indeed should be: a modified version...

Any quirks or screw-ups in the mod are my responsability...[sm=00000030.gif]

A poll would be interesting. Speaking for myself, I rarely play the P.O. Even in development, I usually just hot-seat it.

Thanks for the heads-up gentlemen.
I received similar opinions from other sources... so without further ado....

House Of Cards 1945 - TOAW3.2 mod on GameSquad

It comes in a PO/PBEM version and one with mod-mod Soviet PO.

I'm gonna rework the German PO version... you can play vs the German PO in the standard version though but I wanna make the Soviet player sweat a bit more [sm=00000622.gif]

Also available on Rugged Defense in a couple of days.

Silvanski -> House Of Cards 1945 - screenie (10/3/2007 9:59:28 PM)

Turn 1 action
The Soviets broke out of the Sandomierz bridgehead... the 4th Pz Armee gets whacked.
To the north, facing unreconned Pulawy, the Sperrverband von Alphen nervously awaits what might be coming their way...

Added the "free deployment" and Axis PO versions.
All 4 versions are in one zipfile

Silvanski -> GTD 1944-1945 mod (10/13/2007 2:36:06 PM)

...after evaluating several things my AAR brought to light the tedious bits and pieces work on the Axis PO is nearing completion... several formations have been rerouted to provide better coverage...

And like in HoC I added a tiny what-if? thingy to the German OOB[8|]... just in case the scenario runs beyond May 8, 1945.

Silvanski -> RE: GTD 1944-1945 mod (10/19/2007 3:05:24 PM)

My TOAWIII mod of Gotterdammerung 1944-1945 is available

The version on GS is not definitive... it is playable but I discovered some minor bits and pieces which can be improved.

The Allied PO will benefit from these improvements

Silvanski -> GTD 1944-1945 mod (11/4/2007 1:09:59 AM)

Coming close to the definitive mod version.
Corrected something which was left over from the original: 100's of Hummels in the replacement inventory was a bit too much.
The Luftwaffe OOB has been updated and all JG's KG's etc are now single unit formations.
Reexamined German OOB's for withdrawals/disbanding and late reinforcements.
Nice to see how reconstituted German units are practically immobile due to lack of trucks.
I'm currently testing vs the Allied PO and having a tough but jolly time.
Maybe a bit more tinkering with the Allied shock levels but for the rest this large scenario is very playable.

Silvanski -> GTD 1944-1945 mod (11/19/2007 12:28:45 PM)

Finished the last playtest as Germans vs Allied PO... Berlin fell in March 1945, scenario ended 11 days after that ...
I managed a succesfull Ardennes offensive gaining valuable bonus points and lowering the Allied supply (sacrified my SS panzers to capture the port of Antwerp though) and hang on to Budapest and Hamburg... Minor defeat.
Almost all notes I took during play have been implemented... adjusted some replacement levels, made some minor changes to the map etc etc and tried to beef up the Allied PO a bit more...

The only thing left to do is make a copy in which all formations are available for orders on turn 1 for the "free deployment" version.
