KDonovan -> TBM-3d (5/25/2007 11:24:04 PM)

i'm gonna be getting a couple squadrons of TBM-3d in my PBEM soon. I see in the database that they are equiped with Radar, but other than that, they are essentially the same as regular TBM's. So i assume they are a night-attack version of the TBM. My question is...does the radar help in anyway in initiating a night attack, or does it take the same dumb luck as it always had to get planes to fly on naval attack missions at night??

YankeeAirRat -> RE: TBM-3d (5/25/2007 11:42:52 PM)

Actually the TBM-3D wasn't the night fighter variant. Rather according to the sources that I have the TBM-3D were improved verisions of the TBF-1D and TBM-1C, which used either an ASD-1 or APS-2 radar to assist in searching for submarines and other surface targets. The bombadier had a radar scope place in his postion and used it to guide the pilot to with in visual range of the target.

does the game model this??...or would a normal TMB in the game be just as effective on naval search?... Seems to me this TBM variant is just eye-candy

So far I have seen nothing to indicate any airborne surface search radar does anything whatsoever, at least in Stock. Are you playing some mod?

yep, playing stock.....so if TBM-3d is the same as the TBM in regards to game play...that seems to free another aircraft slot for those modders out there

Cathartes -> RE: TBM-3d (5/26/2007 6:19:59 PM)

If the radar influence is nil in-game, then seems like there's room in the data/art to distinguish between the TBF/M-1 and TBF/M-1C (two wing .50 cal guns w/cowl gun deleted, increased mount options and drop tanks), and TBM-3 (increased armor and slight increase in performance with the possibility of 2x 1000lb bombs and 1x 2,000lb bomb, rockets, mines, 100g drop tanks).  However, I don't know how the game handles all the weapon possibilities so it may just be wishful thinking.

treespider -> RE: TBM-3d (6/7/2007 3:17:30 PM)

I note that the TBM-3d occupies slot 102...per the manual it should not be carrier capable. Has anyone received one in game and is it carrier capable?

dtravel -> RE: TBM-3d (6/7/2007 11:29:50 PM)

The Allies get two 24-plane VTN squadrons of TBM-3d's in 1944.  Most people probably don't notice because they upgrade to the TBM-3 and by the time the units arrive the Allies have a few thousand of those in stock.  They are not carrier capable.
