So, when does the WitP interface come out? [:D]

You guys are slow.  I heard about that a few days ago in a Usenet group for wargames.  [:'(]

wdolson -> RE: OT microsoft secret project (6/4/2007 9:16:43 AM)

I heard about this the other day.  The technology is interesting, though I can see some possible pitfalls.  It has many stengths in manipulating images, though it wouldn't be great for doing text relating things like using a word processor.  Ergonomically the demo models would be hell on your back after a while.  Eventually the consumer model may end up being something like a drafting table with a slanted surface.

With Windows running in your desk, it gives a whole new meaning to crashing your desktop.

I just had a vision of a whole wall with the complete map of WITP on it...using "touch" to manipulate your units.[X(]

Hellelluah! That would absolutely ROCK! I'm invisioning a TF orders screen where you can input waypoints. [:D]

Dunno - my screen is filthy as it is, and I'm not even trying to poke it with fingers. How the frutz am I supposed to pop open a bag of doritos while I play?

bradfordkay -> RE: OT microsoft secret project (6/4/2007 8:07:34 PM)

I can also picture quite a few smashed screens when a PBEM turn goes bad... Now it's usually the mouse or the keyboard that suffers - relatively inexpensive compared to what one of those desktops will cost the frustrated gamer...

Not for WITP, to manipulate you units you will have to use "touch touch touch touch" and keep a finger on the left upper corner and slide with the foot at the bottom...

I think before games like WITP (who has a small public) will use such technology, we will be used to command computers by words rather than by touch...

That is soooo low tech, what is needed is laser pointers instead of touch screens. [:-]
Then you can sit in your Lazy Boy Lounge chair and direct you fleets. [&o]

I do hope they put cup holders in the table, you don't want to have a beer spill and an entire Naval Task force become drunk and invade the wrong island. Wait a minute that aready happens.. [:D]

That's already worked on:

Touch screens have been around for a while.  I worked with one back about 10 years ago.  It just treats the single point of contact as a mouse basically.  The big problem I see with using this new tabletop interface is that the software has to be written to allow and handle the multi-point input.  WiTP would have to be re-written from the ground up to work that way.  (And if they're going to do that there are a lot of other things that would need to be done first.)

Of course Great Naval Battles did that 15 years ago.
