Hey again

I converted alot of my AK's in Osaka to various auxilary ships.. They are now starting to roll of the assembly line.

I converted a number to AV's... Apparently the Japanese AV can only hold 1 floatplane..
My question is.. how if at all can I divide my floatplane units to get single aircraft so I can transfer them to my AV's... I guess the same question could be asked about the Japanese submarines... seeing as many of them can only hold 1 aircraft.

The AV can support 12 float planes at a base. There is no way to break existing units down enough to operate off of the AV.

Your only option would be to transfer some single plane FP units from CLs, subs, or MLs.

You can only base one a/c on the AV, but it will still support 10 FP/FF/SP at a base in the same hex.

Those AVs are only going to be useful docked at small bases to provide float plane support. They can support 18 float planes when docked. They can even do this while in a task force at a dot base.

It can be quite useful for forward recon. Send one with a small AP to a dot base and drop supplies. The AV stays and the AK returns. You can then operate a couple Emily or Mavis chutais out of that base. Just have to keep an eye out for airstrikes.

Hmm, I think we need to get our storys straight about how many a/c an AV can support.[;)]

They come in various flavors. Pretty sure the small IJ ones can support only 10 a/c. The big ones support more (mabe 12?), and the CS I think can support 20.

Isn't it the allied ones that can support 18?

I'm going from memory, so caveat emptor. Best thing to do is check on the ship data screen. It will tell you have many aircraft support points it has.

From Section 14.2 of the manual (top of page 191)

Japanese AVD/AV/CS ships: their capacity plus 10, minus the number of planes on board.

Allied AVD/AV/CS ships with a durability greater than 12: their capacity plus 18, minus the number of planes on board.

Allied AVD/AV/CS ships with a durability less than or equal to 12: their capacity plus 12, minus the number of planes on board.

Example: An IJN CS with a capacity of 24 with 16 planes on board provides 18 aviations support (24+10)-16=18

That's where my 18 came from: 8 for the onboard ships (which I almost invariably move to the base) + 10 = 18. That's what I remembered seeing most of the time on the base info screen: Aviation Support: xxx+18.

More info. The Sanyo class AV can carry 8 a/c. The Kamikawa class AV 12. All (early) CS can carry 24 a/c.

Now my question is, can/do any planes fly from these ships while at sea, or do they have to unload at a base to fly any?

I ask this because any AV or CS TF shows aircraft range radii while at sea. Which leads me to believe that they have some inherent flight capability. I've been wrong before....

I know the CS has onboard flight capability--good for ASW and Naval Search. I just wasn't sure about the AVs.

The AVs that come with airgroups can operate them while at sea. The ones that are coverted can only operate one and do not come with groups of their own

Edit: AVDs can not operate AC at sea

American AVs seem to be able to support land-based aircraft. I dumped a squadron of damaged F4F3s in Noumea before the base force arrived, and the resident AVD was able to get them operational (in addition to maintaining the VP squadron it was assigned there to handle).
