Hellcat_Canada -> questions regarding future modding and some existing stuff (6/13/2007 3:58:23 AM)

Alright so I love the game and have started to mess around with a few things and while the potential is huge I have some questions; in no particular order...

1) Can we have an option that keeps the music playing during the combat animation? I find it very annoying that during successive raids the tunes keep cutting out.

2) How come the plane type editor is limited in such aspects as fire power and cruising speed. shouldn't we be able to go higher than 300 mph (speaking of post war aircraft here...) and most of the variables are limited to like 0-7, can't we be given a higher range like 0-20?

3) How come the wildcat, hellcat and corsair have the same firepower rating? shouldn't the wildcat be lower due to it's 4 X .50 vs 6 X .50 on the other two?

1. Probably. I made Alex stop the music during the combat animations so he should be able to put it back in as an option.

2. Well, there is question as to who would be fighting who with post war aircraft. USA vs Britain over non payment of Lend Lease bills, perhaps? Some other navies had a few carriers, often war time hand-me-downs, but it's hard to see a fight worthy of the name. The ratings are adequate for those high performance aircraft that just missed the war.

3. I'll refer this question to a higher authority.

Thanks for the rapid response, post war stuff would of course be pure fantasy.  I only bring up the point concerning fire power levels because of the large difference in armaments. For example if the F4U Corsair is rated at a 6 and it is armed with 6 X .50 mgs what rating would you give a F7F Tigercat a 7? (which would be armed with 4 X .50 in the nose and 4 X 20 mm in the wing root)  I fully realize that they saw almost zero carrier use but I want to throw some examples behind my point.

There's always a way - we have a Modern flag in the Editor which means that F-14s are way tougher than a normal 7 value, we could do something similar, though less extreme, if we thought there was a need.

3. F4F-3 Wildcat had 4 x .50 cal.; F4F-4 had 6 x .50 cal., same as Hellcat and Corsair

you're absolutely right, I just checked the editor... my mistake

Well; the cruise speed of the aircraft in the editor according to the manual is in knots; and you can go up to 300 knots in the current version of CAW.

According to the official Standard Aircraft Characteristics sheet the USN used in planning:

A-4 Skyhawk Cruise speed with 2 x 500 lb bombs and 1 x 1000 lb bomb is 405-410 knots.

AD-5 Skyraider Cruise Speed with 1 x 1000 lb bomb, 1 x 500 lb bomb, 12 x 100 lb bombs is 165 knots

F2H-3 Banshee cruise speed in fighter configuration with 2 x 170 gallon drop tanks is 385 knots.

FJ-2 Fury cruise speed in fighter configuration with 2 x 200 gallon drop tanks is 450 knots.

F3D Skynight Cruise Speed in night fighter configuration with 2 x 150 gallon drop tanks is 395 knots.

So in order to simulate early naval jets and immediate postwar aircraft, you only need to raise the cruise speed maximum by 100 knots; which should be sufficient; because not every aircraft is going to be at peak optimum performance, and not all pilots are equal; plus there's the problem of formation keeping; so I wouldnt' be surprised if they're 25-50 knots lower than the official planning figures

Alternate history; and what ifs are always fun -- e.g. what if the Japanese had decided NOT to attack pearl harbor in 1941; but instead held off declaring war on the US until about 1945?

..... until they received the blueprints of the german jet Me-262. :D. How about that? [:D]
Hehe
True story: A fully functional Me-262 (disassembled) and its blueprints, Uranium, MP-44 samples and other "useful" things were loaded onto a german submarine and sent to Japan around March or April 1945. When this sub got word that Germany surrendered in May 1945, the German crew voted for surrendering to the next Allied naval vessel instead of delivering the "goods", while the 2 jap officers, who were escorting the precious cargo, commited suicide in the captain's cabin.

Just Wondered..about updates/mods to Carriers at war in relation to the Atlantic or the Med (as I come from the UK) ...Royal Navy and all that..
i.e. Are we at any point going to see New 'Carriers at War' updated to old 'A Complete Carriers at War' ....which incidentally still works in XP..

Failing that how about giving us additional Maps and new carriers like Illustrious and Ark Royal....Graf Zeppelin at a pinch to recreate our own scenarios....

Apologies if someone has asked something similar and it's already been answered..or you (Matrix/SSG) have made it clear this is as far as you planned to go with the update..

It's just a bit too soon after the release of CAW for us to be making comments about future retail products. It is safe to say though that the more well sell of CAW, the better the chances of follow up product seeing the light of day. When we get a moment we will offer some guidance for scenario creators.

Hey good guy, you'd probably like this:

From another Board I'm on; a member is writing a story about The Battle of the Orkneys in 1945:

Basically, Germany manages to conquer Britain; and builds up a fleet of:

3 x CVs (Oswald Boelcke, Graf Zeppelin, Werner Voss)
3 x CAs (Admiral Scheer, Lutzow, Admiral Hipper)
3 x CLs (Nurnberg, Koln, Leipzig)
6 x BBs (Derfflinger, Seydlitz, Moltke, Von der Tann, Bismarck, Tirpitz)
2 x BCs, (Gneisenau, Scharnhorst)
30 x destroyers (minus one, Z-24, lost in route)

They go up against the US Navy.

Description of German Fleet

The Battle Part One
The Battle Part Two
The Battle Part Three
The Battle Part Four
The Battle Part Five
The Battle Part Six

The battle is still going on; in terms of writing...
