Honda -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/14/2007 1:51:48 PM)

PM?

rtrapasso -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/14/2007 2:07:07 PM)

Guadalcanal (with their new expanded jetport)? [&:]

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/14/2007 2:33:56 PM)

Both no, but the general area is right (i.e. was under 8th Area Army jurisdiction).

Another hint: picture has not been rotated

rtrapasso -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/14/2007 2:35:32 PM)

Rabaul?

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/14/2007 2:35:54 PM)

No.

rtrapasso -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/14/2007 2:40:47 PM)

i am making assumption that N is up...

Hmmm - Wewak??

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/14/2007 3:13:30 PM)

Bingo! *Grr, next time no hints!* [;)] Okay, bonus question - how many airfields are hidden in this picture?

Well, i see at least 2 - and maybe 3 if you count the dock as a "seaplane" field... there is also something that looks like a heliport (does that count as an "airfield"?)

didn't see the non-rotated comment until after i answered, but the 8th Army clue was a help... [8D]

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/14/2007 7:20:21 PM)

Well, one airstrip is cleary visible at the right, the second is where?

i thought it was in the far upper left (only partially seen)...

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/14/2007 10:14:49 PM)

Well, it is on the left side of the shot, but 'hidden' under the main road running roughly East-West - the road was built on top of the runway. It was the original airstrip built in 1937.

Here is a more detailed shot of what is called Boram Airfield, the right-hand airstrip built by the Japanese. Watch those bomb craters after all those years...

See the big crater in the upper left corner of the area between the taxiways? Now, I want to know what kind of bomb made it, what fuse settings, what 'message' had been scribbled on the bomb by the ground crew, date and time of the mission, the plane's type, tail number, nickname and nose art scheme, the pilot's name, nickname, birthdate, shoe size and what he had for breakfast the day of the mission, his girlfriend's name, the name of his girlfriend's girlfriend, and the name of the guy she was screwing around with while her boyfriend was risking his life bombing Wewak. THAT should be a bit more difficult, no? [;)]

WhoCares -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/14/2007 11:50:31 PM)

Some might remember my 'Where's this?' threads from a few years back, but I love to be now on the guessing end - keep it up! [sm=00000436.gif]

For completeness my few contributions in 2005:
No. 1: CamRanh Bay
No. 2: Port Moresby
No. 3: Clark Field
No. 4: Chuuk (Truk)
No. 5: Bungo Strait
No. 6: Kendari
No. 7: GiliGili/Milne Bay

Edit: Might actually be interesting to check whether they have updated the quality of some of the areas by now...

Edit2: Yepp, much improved quality for most locations, except for GiliGili/Milne Bay. I like the wakes of those ships abroaching Kendari [;)]
Chuuk/Truk only available in very high resolution...

For that answer, Rob deserves a copy of your signature shot without the lettering...[:D]

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/15/2007 9:03:34 AM)

LOL, nice try! [:D]   Regarding #14, I was thinking the same while typing the question...   **Grumbling: Well, I have asked for it but grrr this cannot be true - firing up Google** Ha, but I ain't stupid! According to the USAAF Combat Chronology, there was NO bombing attack against Wewak that day. On 03/08/44 5th Air Force hit Nubia and Awar in the Hansa Bay area. Sorry, no cigar! [:'(]  [;)]

The 380th was broken up into different elements - some in Oz, some in NZ, so the missions might not match up as multiple missions could occur. And, of course, there were multiple organizations in the 5th AF, and the USAAF C.C. apparently only lists the main efforts.

In fact, this mission did occur (according the "official" 380th website - which i have bookmarked at home) - and the aircraft (and commander) are correct. You have to check the individual aircraft in the bombing group to find the info (it has a record of all their missions by *aircraft* [8|]). The aircraft, model, serial number, commander, etc are all correct - it even lists the pilot's serial number! The website is still working on their list of missions, so this info wasn't easy to dig out!! (i'll post a URL and screenshot of the info later if i am still doubted...[:'(])

EDIT - i WILL admit i got creative on a few of the later questions!!! (as well as question #3) [:D]

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Mystery Location #2 (6/15/2007 1:45:46 PM)

Ok, ok, I believe you, this is just for fun. I figured that most of the data you provided was based on facts. The 'creative' ones made me snort coffee through my nose when I read your post this morning [:D]. Well, I'm going to find some REALLY obscure airbase for the next issue...

I think you should deny credit for not providing the suit of the royal flush - the trivia quizes need to maintain their high standards [:D]

Now that I look at your links, I faintly remember... rogueusmc has mentioned in the first mystery location post that there has been a Google Earth Quiz before and I have tried to locate the posts but apparently didn't use the proper key words. Thanks for reposting your contributions! I will avoid posting the same locations.
