KGzim -> Tank OP fire vs Inf (9/3/2000 2:20:00 PM)

Why do tanks not engage infantry beyond 3 hexs(AI controled)? I can sit back at 4 hexs and fire my Inf section at the tank and it wont shot back? Is this a bug or a design thing. Looking forward to Ver.4. KGzim

Perhaps the A.I. does not see your infantry as too much of a threat beyond 3 hexs & is saving its opfire for a juicier target such as one of your tanks. This A.I. is much trickier than in previous Steel Panthers. It will also try to get you to use up your opfire by moving trucks or tough to hit units in your line of sight before exposing its more important units. Or so I have seen. I hope this helped. ------------------ Robert (Bonzo) Lindsay Coordinator: 28th (Northwest) Battalion Headquarters http://dreadnaught.home.icq.com/enter.html

Ok what about Infantry support tanks? There job was to engage soft targets. Take the Pz-IV D very limited AP but lots of HE? How about the M-4 105mm? Russian KV-2? Just an observation. Thanks though for your thought. KGzim "somewhere on the EF"

If the infantry is in cover - it might not be seen. Really bad crews tend to be able to fire the MA and thats it in OPfire - they they should fire at moving infantry if an OpFire is triggered [This message has been edited by Paul Vebber (edited September 03, 2000).]

I have done a few tests and played many games and always end up with the same results. I have had elite tanks that will not fire at any infantry that it can see or moving that is over 3 hexs. Bonzo could be right, that the computer AI during OPfire does not see any Infantry units over 3 hexs as a threat. If this is so than the Infantry support tanks main roll would be to engage AT guns, mortar and bunkers over 3 hexs. Any how I look forward to SPWAW v.4 I see many great things in this new version.

Sorry that I've to complain agian Did a test some time ago for a scenario I wnated to make - piled some PzIIc in three hexes ('was 3 in each IIRC), and rushed some Pol.CAv. up tp them. As I had both sides st to "human", I was well aware what was going on ... ..and while the "visibility" was about 12 or so, and the Cav. was well visible to the tanks from about 6..8 hexes, the only did OPfire when the approaching units where exactly 3 hexes away. This didn't change when I out the tanks to AI control. As the next patch was announced, I delayed the scenario (and I'm delaying at least two of them still) until it was out, and didn't do more testing on this But maybe it's changed with v4.0 .. we'll seee Arralen
