The game is strategic and does not have these but in a TCPIP game I am playing the allied player flings multiple corps into occupied europe at differing locations on essentially suicide missions. It certainly feels like commando raids!

The point I am making is that invasions are 'free' as it costs no more resources to move a corps and invade than it does to just transport it to a friendly location, 4PP to load on the ship and away you go!.

Historically invasions took a lot of planning and preparation with specialist shipping, combat loading etc etc. For instance you could not just embark your troops in the USA and expect them to invade europe without chaos resulting. Normally troops crossed the Atlantic by fast steamer and the equipment went by cargo ship.

I think for the human player it should cost production points to unload in a enemy controlled hex, simulating the planning and logistical buildup needed for an invasion. I would suggest the cost be the same as additional rail moves, currently 7 points.

why suicide missions dave? the first time when i attacked in 4 places i did not realize i needed ports to sustain my troops[8|]. This is what happens when you dont read the manual!

They seemed like suicide missions the first time around but perhaps not in this round eh! [:)]
They certainly do mean that the axis has to keep massive resources in the west and Italy and not in russia. I would still like to see a cost for invading though.

Well in your case Dave it appears the cost is a minimum of 24.  20 for the garrison and 4 for the transport.

That seems expensive but it will keep the Eastern front honest.

Never thought of it like that, interesting strategy, thanks i will file that one for future use [:)]

What I do not like is there are so few ports on the coast of France. You have to have one for supply and they just don't exist.

IrishGuards -> RE: Commando raids or free invasions (6/25/2007 2:51:00 AM)

Ships provide supply to coastal hexes they are adjacent to ... 1 supply .. your guys can still reinforce .. and even attack ...
Yes you need a port and there are not many around .. Means if Allies are gonna invade they better hit both flanks and front of port at same time .. !!

I think forget the PP for invasions ... Idea though .. Maybe BB can only Bombard if an invasion is going on ..
But ... I would rather be able to embark and stay in port .. then move to coast and disembark ..
I think that the game makes up for this in not being able to disembark the same turn you embark ... and also if you are at sea ..
shipping troops into a port you own .... that they should disembark immediately .. why would they wait ...

Barthheart -> RE: Commando raids or free invasions (6/25/2007 3:08:34 AM)

If you capture a city it will supply all your troops that have landed. You don't need a port. IE capture Cherbourg and it will supply your trrops even though it's not a port (which is odd...[&:])

IrishGuards -> RE: Commando raids or free invasions (6/25/2007 3:36:02 AM)

Ports .. maybe they should have an intrinsic combat value to keep the Allies from bottling up Axis Fleet units ... and then using
CV's to air attack them .. [8|]
BB to surface attack them ...[:-]
subs to soften them up ..!!! [:-]
destroyers to search for them .. basically this involves the old fire ship method of attacking ports w fleet units inside .... running DD's into hexes beside the port or the port itself .... [X(]

certainly is odd, you can land supplies but not embark troops, doh!

It's odd that the allies can't just build ports on their invasion sites (as they actually did)...you could make them cost a lot.

targul -> RE: Commando raids or free invasions (6/28/2007 11:51:03 PM)

Build the mulberries.  Not a bad idea it would be the first game that allowed that.

SMK-at-work -> RE: Commando raids or free invasions (6/29/2007 5:28:39 AM)

Mulberries are simulated by keeping a ship adjacent to the newly liberated coast!!  that's the whole point of it!

Only major ports are prepresented by ports per se - although you can certainly argue which deserve hte status.  the absence of a port symbol doesn't mean there isn't a port there, nor does it stop you unloading troops there!  sheesh people - by all means criticise the game (I do!!), but at least get it right!

kadeen -> RE: Commando raids or free invasions (6/29/2007 6:26:19 AM)

Mulberries were included in Clash of Steel, along with stacking, multi-hex attacks, etc.  Terrible graphics as I recall, but functional.
