Zeitgeist -> World War One Mod (6/25/2007 7:50:13 PM)

Has anyone ever thought of doing this?

Before asking that, what do you all think it would take (what changes would need be made) to similate this conflict (other than the necessary OOB changes)

Your thoughts?

Patrick

IAN 1963 -> RE: World War One Mod (6/25/2007 11:46:55 PM)

Hi
Have a look at the "Baltic Generals" site washington.edu/toliy/panzer they have a very extensive WW1 era modd for Panzer Gneral II, I wonder if theIR work could be converted for the Campaighn Series the way some of the other Panzer General stuff has? I have contacted them suggesting that they think about doing this. Have a look at the equipment list for their mod below, make my mouth whater -)

Any thoughts
Ian

Warhorse -> RE: World War One Mod (6/26/2007 2:03:08 AM)

Paul Adaway has already done a very extensive mod on this for the West Front, in the works...

Mike

Zeitgeist -> RE: World War One Mod (6/26/2007 2:22:05 AM)

do you have any information / contact information for it/him?

I'd love to make some scenarios for it :)

Regards,

Patrick

Warhorse -> RE: World War One Mod (6/27/2007 1:33:14 AM)

Here is the last known email I have from him, haven't heard from him in awhile though. I was helping him with the 2D icons, but became too entrenched in my korean War mod and other duties, so have fallen behind. Good luck!!
padaway@blueyonder.co.uk .

With regard to re - gigging the game to give an early 20th contrary feel. I think the trick here would be to find fun a way of simulating the fact that all (with one very important exception) tactical communication had to be physical, (runners) visual (signal flags and lamps) or telephone based.

The important exception was the direction of artillery fire by radio from aircraft. Something the British Army got very good at and ,one of the main reasons they were willing to accept such horrendous casualties in aircrew to keep an aircraft presence over enemy lines.

I would suggest the best way to simulate this would be as follows.

1.To be eligible to move all on map units must be within command control range of a leader or. Command control range would be the units command rating. That is to say a 5 leader would empower units within 5 hexes. Taking this approach would encourage formations to bunch together and slow down as leader casualties were taken. (both historical) It also enables you to control the quality of a unit directly by the number of leaders it has. Something that the figure wargames rules “Over The Top” also did particularly for late war Russian units.

2.Introduce static artillery forward observer units. (They cease to function if forced to move away from their start hexes, where their telephone links are) Also artillery fire missions which are plotted on hexes observed either by a forward observer or a spotter aircraft arrive with the current delay whereas all others take quite a lot longer.

3.Bring in barrage balloons which would work as static spotter plains, possibly with an even faster on call fire time because of the more direct and securer communication link. They could also be shot at by AA guns and have (balloon busting air strikes plotted against them.

Those are all very good ideas. Idea 1 would have to be a house rule for players I think though

IAN 1963 -> RE: World War One Mod (6/30/2007 4:09:22 PM)

Would a better way to simulate this be to increase the effect of being out of supply, reduce the range of HQ units and make all except battalion ones static and only allow battalion HQ’s to move 1 hex a turn?

Could the engine be modifies to reflect this ?

PS I have been having a look further at the WW1 era mods that have been made for the Panzer General Series. It strikes me that with the WW1 kit already in the game, if you could obtain the cooperation of the Panzer General WW1 modders in adapting their work. that an early 20th Contrary edition of the Campaign Series could be put together relatively smoothly from a graphics point of view as much of the work has already been done.

I have very little experience modding the CS.  My main work goes in designing scenarios, as you can imagine this is all a bit much for me

Gosh, when w think of WW1 why are we so blinded to the fact that there was a lot more to the war than the Western Front? There was the Desert (Palestine), East and West Africa, the Alps, the Po Valley even China and that's before we get to the Eastern Front.

Even in the West there's plenty of scope for fire and manoeuvre - the advances in 1914 for example, a bltzkrieg by any other name, the tank actions from 1917 onwards, the Ludendorff offensive in 1918 and a fair bit besides.

WW1 has an awful lot of scope.

Ladmo -> RE: World War One Mod (6/30/2007 8:51:03 PM)

Chris,

Agreed. World War I was, we must remember, a world war - the original, one might say. I think it would be a fantastic mod and one that might bridge the gap to World War II. For myself, I would love to get into a serious Russian Civil War campaign.

This is a great idea and it should be followed up.

Zeitgeist -> RE: World War One Mod (7/1/2007 1:07:33 AM)

We would need 1-2 dedicated OOB/ unit guys
1, maybe 2 Graphics guys

I dont think we need to edit HQ unit movements, here's why.

Example: a Battle of the Somme Scenario, if an HQ unit moves across No Man's land, its gonna get shot at.  So naturally you would keep it in your own trenchline until you knew 100% sure that it would be safe to move it across to captured trenches.

All we would need to do, in regards to the Ammunition/HQ range problem, would be to edit the supply value in the scenario design section, would we not?

Why don't you guys contact Paul Adaway, he already has done most of this, and would certainly like the help!?

I got a response, here is what it says:

Mike/Patrick/Ian,   Thanks for your interest in my WWI Mod. Sorry to take so long to reply, but I rarely check my emails these days (see point 3 below!).   My work on the mod has come to a halt, for three reasons;   1) The project as a mod of the old Talonsoft West front is pretty much complete. Any further work I think should really wait until we see what changes are made to the game engine if Matrix decide to publish. I have made some requests for changes that would better reflect WWI era warfare, and I am waiting to see what happens. The mod is very comprehensive, it covers all the combatant nations in great detail, allowing for scenarios covering all the theatres of WWI and extending to cover the Russian Civil War and the Russo-Polish War. I have all the graphics that I need apart from some obscure armoured cars, I don't think that the Baltic General site can help with this.   2) After four years of spending every single spare minute on this mod, I am rather burnt out and need a break.   3) My family and work commitments have expanded over the last year to leave me with very little spare time to work on it.   After spending so long working on this, it would be a shame to let it go to waste. I still hope one day to be able to work with Matrix in releasing this game.     regards     Paul

Andreus -> RE: World War One Mod (7/20/2007 2:37:05 PM)

I hope one day this mod gets relaesed, I bought this game yesterday and have yet to learn to play.
However my main interest is WW1, I'd pay gold for a WW1 tactical game

vadersson -> RE: World War One Mod (7/20/2007 3:00:20 PM)

Hi gang,

Let me second the motion for a WWI mod. I know little about WWI but would love to play some of the battles for it like I do WWII using JTCS. I hope Matrix can expand the JTCS to include all of the first half of the 20th Century WWI through Korea. I can't imagine it would be too hard. Of course last I heard from the CSL team they lost thier programer, so that might set the projects back.

I too would be willing to pay for an add on to expand to WWI (and/or Korea.)

Thanks,
Duncan

Warhorse -> RE: World War One Mod (7/21/2007 1:44:30 AM)

Well, at least a Korean one is in sight, am trying to drum up support.. My mod for it is complete, just needs enhancements, I will be updating the free download at the Blitz soon, but as of right now there are only one scenario to play, need help with designers, and that proves to be hard to get help with... If Matrix ever decides to take it on, it will be a great addition, at least I think so, I put my heart and soul into it for many years now!!

Landser44 -> RE: World War One Mod (11/11/2007 6:33:11 PM)

This thought occured to me as well. I am a huge WW1 buff and would love a WW1 tactical game. Some people think it would be booring because of the lack of armor, etc. but I think it would be extremely challenging because of what you have to work with. There would be some OOB modification and manipulation, some minor graphical changes and maybe even some sound modding, but I don't know that there would be a whole lot of hardcore alterations to the engine or anything to make it relaistic.

The engine models infantry combat fairly realistically for either period and you could possibly just switch graphics files for a tank unit similar in charicteristics to a WW1 era tanks and utilize those to model armor in some scenarios.

They already have cavalry and horse drawn weapons modeled in the game so that isnt a problem.

The terrain graphics are already quite adaptable to a WW1 era battlefield as are most of the sound files. Soem weapon sounds need to be changed obviously - there are a plethora of sound bytes out there for Maxim MG's and VIckers MGs, bolt action rifles, exploding shells, etc.

Utilizing gas in a scenarios could be interesting - and the big question is, how would you do it? It might be one element that just simply is beyond the scope of what can be modded in Campaign Series. I don't know yet.

For "flavor" intro screens could be modded as could the bacground pics for the database, etc. There are also some good early 20th century music files I think I have from other titles.

I'm actually really jazzed about this idea and am considering beginning to tacke this.
Any other takers or people that might be into this?

Please sound off.

HORST324 -> RE: World War One Mod (11/16/2007 9:41:41 PM)

Count me in for moral support. I'm not talented enough to do any actual modding, but I would pay cash for a well-made World War I mod! My friend and I play this game by PBEM addictively, we sometimes have three games going on simultaneously. During our last battle (a scenario with Hungarians assaulting across a river line), we both remarked how the resulting battlefield (replete with shell holes, destroyed buildings, wrecked forests, bunkers, trenches, etc.) looked like a WWI field. With the right amount of tweaking and adding the appropriate period bells and whistles, this game would rock as a WWI battle game and I would encourage you to give it a serious shot. I think there is alot of interest out there for just such a game.

Landser44 -> RE: World War One Mod (7/19/2008 6:18:26 PM)

OK, here is an update. I have revised my intial plan to just modify the game using WW2 data and feel that the only way to do this is to start afresh and mod the whole game. (I may steal some stuff, but overall it is going to be a new game) I recieved the modding tools and am learning how to do it currently. I have been sketching ideas regarding this mod and I would really like to do it right. I am going to do it using West Front and it will cover the First World War in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. I know that stuff went on elsewhere, but it is going to be challenging enough to do everything that needs to be done for the Western Front, the Eastern Front, Southern Europe and the Middle East and Africa. I know its pretty ambitious, but I have lots of free time, we will see how it goes. Frankly I am tired of waiting for somebody to produce a good WW1 tactical game so I am going to do it myself. If anyone wants to help with this let me know - even if it is just planning or research.

Here is preliminary list of nationalities:
AXIS become "The Central Powers" and ALLIED become "The Allied Powers / The Entente".

I am going to change the following NATION CODES in WF to these new nations -
(00 - Allied Russia) will become The Russian Empire
(01 - Axis Germany) become the German Reich(and Colonial)
(02 - Axis Italy) becomes the Ottoman Empire
(04 - Axis Hungary) becomes the Austro-Hungarian Empire
(08 - Allied France) becomes the French (and French Colonial troops)
(09 - Allied UK) becomes The British Empire (including Canadian, ANZAC and African)
(10 - Allied USA) becomes The United States
(12 - Belgium) becomes Belgium (and Colnies)
(13 - Allied Yugoslavia) becomes Serbia AND Montenegro
(15 - Allied Greece) - Greece
(17 - Allied Romania) - Romania
(18 - Allied Italy) - Italy
(26 - Axis Bulgaria) - Bulgaria
(32 - Allied Albania) - POSSIBLY Albania(still to be determined...)

1. Who have I forgotten?

2. Can you forsee any problems with this configuration? Is there anything I am missing that could cause a problem for me?

3. And YES, it is probably possible to expand this to Russo-Polish War and possibly Russian Civil War as well, I just havent gotten there yet.

*Edit - The "00" Russian Army (Allied) is obviously the "White" Army for Russian Civil War and the "Soviet"(Axis) army can serve as the Red Army. The Red army can fight the (07)Polish(Allied) army for Russo-Polish War.

Gents,

all what you´re thinking about WW 1 units is in Paul´s work. I playtested scenarios in his team and it was a pleasure. The Mod works, but the project stopped [:(]. Why do you not ask him if you can get the files?

Stefan

Warhorse -> RE: World War One Mod (7/19/2008 10:46:44 PM)

Hey Stefan,

I had written him and asked him, but got the impression he wanted Matrix to eventually develope it. I have the mod, and updated it to v. 1.03 and am playing a DCG with it, very nice work on his part. I had been helping him out also with the graphics end of it, and was very sorry to hear he had to stop it due to personal matters and such.

Step Two: Nightmare on Verdun

All Icons are included... and many news.

Dumnorix, you guys have a WW1 mod in the works?
