Google Acquires France

PARIS, FRANCE—Google, the online search giant, announced today that it acquired the nation of France for $6 billion U.S. Tech analysts speculated earlier in the week that Google was preparing for a big move, possibly for a country in Western Europe. The acquisition gives the tech company greater market share in many key sectors, including cheese, berets, truffles, moody artists, and pastoral scenery.

CEO Eric Schmidt didn’t comment on plans for layoffs, but did suggest a shakeup of France’s key leadership positions. Some analysts have questioned the move, citing concerns over France’s lackluster economic growth and recent inability to produce anything new or interesting.

“Basically they bough a six-billion-dollar museum” said John Finkelstein, a financial analyst with Lehman Brothers. “I don’t see how this deal could pay off, but I’m not betting against Google.”

France’s president, Nicolas Sarkozy was unavailable for comment on a day when many French workers were on strike. It was unclear if the strikers were protesting the acquisition or just striking for the hell of it, a common practice in France.

They do NOT strike for no reason.... They strike because that grueling 3 day work week is just to much to bear and sometimes they need another day off.

I hope this doesn't degenerate into another thread of cheap-shots at the French. I've been to quite a few countries, including the U.S. and France and I can tell you they've got a reasonable thing going there. They understand that life is to be lived, not just endured. They were environmentally conscious long before it was fashionable: back when telling the average U.S. citizen that it might be a good idea to use less energy was considered borderline treason and definitely the ravings of a Commie, tree hugging, hippie freak [;)]. French women are hot, sexy, open-minded (yeah! [:'(])and look after themselves. Sure, their economy could be improved and made more efficient, with less protectionism, but that's already happening and it's hardly the only country guilty of that. My Dad's a farmer and he's not exactly impressed with the massive subsidies US farmers get.

Most of this French bashing seems inspired by the fact that they had the audacity to challenge the assertions of that pack of Neo-con arse-clowns in Washington (who are now about as popular as a fart in an elevator to the majority of Americans). "How dare they! Oh...they're right. Well, that makes me dislike them even more!" From afar, I can tell you which country looked stupid out of that whole "Freedom Fries" fiasco. It wasn't France.

They're supremely indifferent to criticism from the U.S. anyway. France is like an insulated, Francophone planet where very little of interest happens in the rest of the Solar System (or Systeme Solare...or something [:'(])). Any messages from Planet Estats Unis are dismissed as the nearly incomprehensible rantings of the fat, stupid and ignorant. Of course, the reality is that the French secretly love the U.S. and feel proud to have partly inspired its political system. Their Gallic pride prevents them from admitting it, however; especially when they've been on the receiving end of an unwarranted shellacking. It's all very amusing.

I lived in France (Camargue) for two years. The French are a great and friendly people. That's all I want to say.
