CCAW - The Coral Sea/USA. Sometimes you make all the right moves and sometimes despite playing hide and seek, you get caught with your pants down, but you just know it is time to be bold. I was planning to use bad weather between Australia and New Guinea, but it failed to materialize when and where I needed it. In the meantime, I had an ill defined contact distant and to the East. Now, perhaps I should have developed it further, but so far South what could it be if not a carrier force trying to clear the path for invasion? So, without confirmation and throwing caution to the wind, I launched any of my dive bombers that could just make it out there. I had intentionally isolated my B17s from the PBYs so that I could use them for long range bombing too. I didn't expect that they would hit anything, but I was hoping for them to scatter the enemy fighters. It's looking like maybe it was the right thing to do. I intend to run down that TG overnight and use my torpedo bombers in the morning to finish off anything still afloat. At which point, I could play it conservative and park off of Port Moresby and run down the clock. Or I could proceed North and see if I can sink some troop transports. Of course, if I am not careful the Japanese CVLs could redeem the situation for them. Hmm, what to do?
