A few months ago I decided to jump in and try UV as I had my eyes on it off and on for several years and I began to try and learn the game. I even started a PBEM game against a really great guy but I could not figure out how to get anything done. I sent a couple of TF's to Guadalcanal but they would never get there. They kept turning around and then I could not seem to get them to land any troops. I basically was overwhelmed and could not figure out what to do. After sitting down and reading most of the manual I am not sure I understand it any better.

Anyway why I am telling you all this is that I was wondering if Carriers at War would be a good introduction to lead into UV once I understand CAW a little better. I imagine they are quite different but just wanted to hear your thoughts.

I love reading about the South Pacific war but cant seem to make the transition to the UV game.

I've never played CAW so I can't answer that part of your question, but I do have and play UV. Have you tried the Tutorial - scenario 18?

One of the things to remember about UV is that transport task forces seem to have ESP when it comes to enemy aircraft carriers. If there are any in the area the run for home. Sometimes setting the TF to do not retire will override this, make sure that the transport TF is not set to Routine Convoy.

Getting CAW will not help you with UV.  They are 2 totally different games with CAW focused on tactical CV ops and not dealing with the strategic picture like UV does.  In UV your supplies enable everything else so strategies used allow tactical plans to be enacted.  Ask your PBEM opponent for help and tips as 9 times out of 10 you'll get good answers that will enhance both of your gaming experiences.

I guess I was just wondering if in CAW you are doing some of the same sorts of things, such as working with supply and other things that could somehow relate to some things in UV but on a simpler scale so that I could take baby steps up to UV.

The PBEM partner I had was a newbie himself or so he said so that is probably not the way to go.

I did play the tutorial through but when it came my time to figure out what to do I could not get anything to do as I wanted. I will admit with supply, I am not sure I have all the numbers figured out on whether the supply is good or bad.

Anyway I sure appreciate your opinions.

Think this way in UV and it'll be your first step in the supply situation.  Decide what you want to do, where you'll defend and where to attack.  Then proceed to build up supplies and fuel at the appropriate bases to support these plans.  You need to think months in advance so that when you launch an attack all of the assets are in place and ready to go.  There's nothig worse than having the ships to clobber your opponent with but the fuel isn't there for them.  Remember that troops in supply with support are much more effective than those with empty bellies and no bullets.  If you read posts on tis forum you'll find many answers to your questions and by asking you tap into a pool of knowledge.  You can always take the manual to the bathroom with you.  [;)]
