For those in Canada and those of you in the US and elsewhere who are able to see it, I highly recommend the new TV show "Dogfights" which can be seen on History Television on Thursdays.

It is a show that uses lots of excellent computer animation, documentary footage, and exciting plane combat tactics, to provide a highly visual understanding of important fighter combat in WW1, WW2, and beyond.

On Thursday, June 28, it showed the hunt for the Bismarck, using great computer animation for the ships and planes. Great explanation of the strategy and tactics used in hunting that German ship. Very well done.

Next Thursday they will be showing the clash between the Yamato surface fleet versus the Taffy3 escort carrier group in the 1944 Pacific War. Should not be missed.

"Dogfights is a military aviation themed TV series depicting historical re-enactments of air-to-air combat that took place in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, as well as foreign conflicts such as the Six-Day War. The program, which airs on the History Channel during the "Fighting Fridays" programming block at 9:00 P.M. (EST), consists of former fighter pilots sharing their stories of actual dogfights in which they took part, and uses state-of-the-art computer-generated imagery (CGI) to give the viewer a better perspective of what it is like to partake in aerial combat (often with the 'camera' shaking when a plane makes a close pass or an explosion occurs close by)."

I'm much more of a pre-WWII ground enthusiast, but I must admit, it is a really interesting series and very well presented.

I find the most interesting and exciting episodes to be the ones using carriers and surface ships as well as the planes.

The Bismarck episode was a treat to watch.

I think this is one of the best shows on History Channel right now.  I had my wife put our name on the list of buyers when they get ready to do a production run of the DVD's for the first season.

The DVD's are being sold but not available yet.  She said they needed to have a specific number of buyers before they burn the disks.

I guess that "The Death of the Japanese Navy " has been my favorite of the series, though I have enjoyed them all.

Season Two starts in July, and I think seeing some big carrier and surface clashes in the Pacific would be a wet dream....

I found the Bismark episode out of context, but it was well done. Lets face it, If it was only dog fighting aircraft the material would eventually get a little stale.

Apparently, "Dogfights" was only supposed to be a 2 hour special. However, it was so well received, and the History Channel received so many comments about it, that an order went in to produce 10 more episodes.

Now there is a second season.

I agree that if it was only dogfights, it would get a bit tedious. But combining the state of the art 3D graphics of planes, ships and carriers is a sight to behold.

I just watched the Leyte Guld episode with my 7 year old son, Jack, who said it was "cool", and now wants to watch more.

This episode is playing in Canada next Thursday. Looking forward to it.

Funny, I used the same expression "cool" when I first saw this series - heh

I can definitely see how it would appeal to younger people as well - those flashy graphics gets 'em every time...

They show this in Australia, i've the Hell Over Hanoi a few times and bits and pieces of 3 or 4 other episodes.

I like Dogfights so much after the first two I saw, I had to go find a good WWII combat flight simulator.  I found a combo pack of IL-2 Sturmivik, Pacific Fighters and Lock-On.

I play the crap out of Pacific Fighters and IL-2, but after loading up Lock-on and trying for a day to get the hang of all the controls, I got frustrated and uninstalled it (for now).

But PF and IL-2 are awesome.  I'll be awaiting the 2nd season with anticipation.  Like i mentioned previously, I hope History Channel gets enough orders for the 1st season DVD set to get to it and burn a bunch so I can get mine (for the archives).

I just finished watching the clash between the IJN Yamato surface fleet versus the US Taffy 3 escort carrier TF in Leyte Gulf in the 1944 Pacific War.

Just outstanding. Great action... and the computer graphics were top-notch. [&o]

It kinda gets me in the mood to fire up UV and engage in some great carrier battles...

Must... command carriers....

Must....launch planes....

Good news on the second season. That was a great series, the graphics were really good. I had them on DVR which allowed me to zoom through the commercial breaks. I liked the one about the F8 Crusader, really cool looking aircraft.

Watching this series is also a great way to get the kids involved. I'll bet WWII action never looked so cool... [8D]

Latest series is coming out now. The first two were a Kamikazi based one and a USAAF vs. the "Sondercommando" German suicide pilots. Intense !

I also saw a preview of one of a P-47B getting smoked. Could it be that they are doing one of Robert S Johnsons memorable mission ?

That's a good idea. I would like to see an episode on The Battle of Midway or The Battle of the Coral Sea.
