Sgt. Rick -> Quick question about ambushing (9/5/2000 9:53:00 PM)

I tried to look this up, but I am having trouble... What settings do you change if you want infantry to set an ambush? I have set them at range 1, but they keep getting seen and fired upon. Am I doing something wrong or is that the correct behavior? Thanks! RIck

It's correct. Experience of both your troops and the enemy has something to do with the spotting i think, terrain has a huge effect of course, number of men in the unit seems to affect spotting as well, if the unit has moved or not etc.. probably other factors too.. Be very careful in choosing the spot for your ambush. Take for example a road running through a forest.. instead of hiding your unit in the edge of the forest, where it can be seen from more than one hex away, hide it further in. Same in cities etc. Always try to keep the enemies visibility to your unit as limited as possible and it will naturally be harder to spot. Using the terrain like that often means that you have a big chance of saving the ambushing unit as well, since the enemy will have a harder time laying supressing fire to keep it stuck.

The only thing you may be doing wrong is the placement of your infantry. Setting range to 1 is right. All depends on what your ambushing and the terrain your infantry are in. Rough terrain, woods, or buildings are best for hiding in. And since vehicles have poorer vision than infantry they are easier to ambush. Oh and visibility will also play a factor too. ------------------ McGib Ready Aye Ready

The other key thing is to have them in "defend" stance so they "take cover". That makes them less likely to be seen and gives them a bonus in assault combat.

Thanks for the help guys!

Ive found assaulting with units with sachel charges totaly ineffective against enemy tank. When I need inf units to kill a tank (east front heavy tanks) i get close to it than assault (almost always failed) than I dont rally but attack again with a suppressed unit... thats almost always a kill (3 inf units can kill 2 KV1 or t34). Maybe not, but they're hell against open topped vehicles. I'm playing Kick In The Door and the lonoe survivor of a group of Soviet civilians is raising holy Ned among the German SP-Guns.
