docpaul -> Question please...! (7/1/2007 6:21:58 PM)

1-When I want a carrier group to suppress a base, in Pacwar you used to be able to specify a standoff distance as well as the base in question as a target. In this game though, if I specify Shortland it cruises right into the hex. If I set a hex 2 away it doesn't attack, as I can't set the target. How do I handle this?
Thanks yet again!

It will attack - but the weather, etc. have to be right in both hexes. Make sure you have the unit set to airfield attack (assuming you want to suppress the airfield - although you might set that for a secondary mission if there are enemy TFs about.) Also, it might help to have aggressive leaders (in both the TF commander, and for the air units).

It also helps to recon the target hex with a dedicated recon unit... if you don't have one, then use a bomber unit or patrol unit to recon.

Or even float planes from an escorting cruiser or BB, the more seperate hexes you set the target from the more likely something will fly.

Set the TF with "do not retire" 2 hexes from shortlands and then set the airgroups seperately(not in shallow wate if possible as it causes 25%[&:] less a/c to fly). you might want to keep some on naval attack in case KB comes (unless its sunk). sometimes naval primary and AF/Port secondary seems to make the escort fighters reluctant to fly to the secondary target (no idea why). Prioritising AF/Port as primary targets will (i think) make it more likely to do as its told to.

All else as Rtrapasso said.

One of the differences between this game and PacWar is this game doesnt follow the little hiways like it did in PacWar. Every hex is a plottable hex. React range is react range, not stand off range from the hex you selected to move to.

If you want to move to 2 hexes from Shortland and launch a strike on the airfield there (and ONLY there) this is what you need to do:

1) plot your TF to move to a hex 2 hexes from Shortland. YOU choose what hex it will move to.

2) click on the TF to see a list of ships in the TF. Select a carrier, click on it and you will see the airgroups assigned to that carrier.

3) click on an airgroup (SBD for example) and you will have options on missions to select. My suggestion is to have naval attack as your primary mission and airfield attack as your secondary. If you have airfield as your primary, they will NOT launch against any surface ships that might pop up.

4) click "target hex" and set this for Shortland. You can then select "set all SBDs in this hex" to set all the SBDs to that same mission.

5) repeat proceedure for your TBs and fighters. One thing to keep in mind is that the target will be set even after you start moving away. A month later you could be off Tokyo and as long as your target is set for Shortlands, the planes will NOT launch on airfields around Tokyo (in this example). To clear it when you are done you need to click the "set target" and then hit esc. This will clear the target.
