Prior to the latest patch, my game worked just fine. It started and quit properly in every visable respect.

However, after the patch, every time I quit the game it crashes...hard.

I have to hit the reset button or turn the power off to get my computer back into a usable mode.

Anyone else having similar problems?

That is strange.  There weren't any large changes to memory allocation or anything like that.  Is your system using a lot of virtual memory when FOF is running?

Yes. I'm running XP Pro (pre-service pack 2)on 512mb of RAM.

Before the patch, this wasn't a problem at all. Now though, it's every single time I close the game out.

The active game closes but the game menu part of the program hangs and gives a "Not Responding" indicator in the task manager.

At that point, I can't access any other programs, the start menu, or anything else.

You're starting off pretty low on memory to begin with. Have you defragmented your harddrive recently? Highly fragmented drives sometimes have trouble closing out quickly, and with relatively little memory that could be causing or contributing to the problem.

I defragment monthly. This has been a constant issue.

No, it's in the default mode.

The only thing that changed on my system was that I patched the game. All other conditions and variables have remained the same.

However, I did have it allow me to restart via the start menu last night. I ended the game differently than usual. I quit out of a detailed battle, I think I instant resolved. Then I went to the main menu, then exited. I usually just menu then exit from within a turn, this time I exited to the full menu before quitting. It still crashed, the program that we start the game up from, that is, but I was able to use the start menu whereas I previously wasn't able to do so.

The minimum specs for playing in full animation are listed at 1GB -- I'd recommend trying out the low animation mode, which should run alright with 512MB.  I *can* get the full animation to run on our 512MB machine, but, as I mentioned, it doesn't run very well.

I understand.

The game runs fine, with the one noted exception, on my machine as is. I've got a nice vcard and very fast RAM on the mobo, so I've been able to get away with less memory than suggested for a number of games.

I'll try low animation, just so I can determine whether it has an effect on how the game crashes on me.

I'll let you know in a few days.
