Rafael Warsaw -> How exactly does a RADAR works in WITP? (7/2/2007 2:15:13 PM)

It was rather an important device of strategic importance.
How does it works in WITP?
Whats the advantage of ships equipped with Radars?
Thank You!

1. it helps to get more fighers on scrambling against enemy.

example: if you have 100 fighers at Warshaw and you set them on 20 % CAP (rest on escort) and your opponent attacks you (from, lets say Krakow) you will have more than 20 % fighters on interception duty.... that is how it works for Allies....

2. ships... they helping you to avoid being suprised (at least this is my understanding)
while having radar in CV TFs will help you as it was mentioned in #1. (if you are Allies) and increase your chances to strike enemy ships even if your naval search didn't spot them (i would like that someone confirms that or denie, not so sure about the last)

If Allies then
   "Alert! Scramble all fighters!"
Else
"Did somebody say there's an air raid?"
End-if.

Are those Radars Air Search only or surface too? Does it helps during a night surface combat?

I can imagine how radars works in RL I was wonder how it works in WITP.

So, with a Radar (in TF or on the carrier???) I can set CAP at ie: 20 to rest my pilots coze thanks to +R more than this will fly CAP anyway. Cool.

IJN: Is it worth to upgrade large ships to have it? IJN is pretty busy all the time not to mention fuel consumption on trips to Osaka and Back. DDs can have these too so maybe it is better to upgrade dds and to include them in TFs?

So the major question is: is a dd +R included in Air Combat TF enough to scramble more fighters or it is necessary to have it on a carrier?

In WITP there are two types of radars: air and surface.

Having a radar on a ship or base will allow you to scramble more fighters than the % of CAP you set. It works well for the Allies and wasn't working for Japan until the lattest patch. I have seen a little more CAP since.

As for ships, radar will assist ships to have a better detection level on enemy ships (or at least it is as I understand that) so you will have less chance to be surprised (that is sure), maybe more to surprise it (not sure) and probably more chance to hit it with gunfire (or at least you should have).

That is only a personnal theory but it seems to me that radar works better when the flagship of the TF has one...

As for upgrading IJN ships, I won't do that for radar only but the increased AA is a must-have, so I usually spend the fuel and time necessary to send them to a repair yard. By the way, you don't need to go to Japan, any repair yard (Singapore, Hong Kong, etc...) will allow you to upgrade your ships.

when are the Japanese base forces receiving radar? Do they ever switch their sound detectors over to radar?

yes, in february 1944 i have BFs equipped with radar 13 type

Radar also increases the DL of incoming strikes which mens that the defending fighters have a greater chance of bouncing the escorts.  Not 100% sure, but I suspect this effect extends from the base to the range of the radar's effect, if so it will help allied escorts to bounce Japanese CAP
