Major Victory -> Amph Operations (7/3/2007 2:12:17 AM)

As I'm new to the game, I seem to notice that there is no range limitation on amph operations, It looks like I can load a corp in the US, cross the Atantic, take a 2 month cruise around the Med and then land whenever I fancy!

Is it possible to limit amph to say a specific hex range from a port? or time limit?

Did the beta team question this or has it been previously discussed. Wth rare exception (torch), amph operations on this scale would only be attempted in relatively short ranges and never outside land based air cover.

As my Irishdragonqueen friend[:D] has asked, amph means "Amphibious landings" I assume you have heard of DDay etc. If you have not heard of the Torch operations in North Africa, then perhaps you might be better off playing Risk.[:'(]

I am new to the game too. But guess the amph and transport movement is handled in the same way in the game. But it should be nice with a difference of the two.

For example:
Amph movement with a range limitation and no need to load on a port and standard unload as in game now.
Transport movement load and unload at ports. No limitations on range.

Just my 2 cents

PS. I can have missunderstod all thing and if soo forget my reply. It has happended before. [:D] DS.

The lack of amph is just silly.  I doubt anyone really thinks people load on to boats sit at the shore for 20 days under air bombardment and then unload into a hostile area.  But that is how we do it in this game.  Instead of building mulberrys like the silly British did we then put a battleship next to the hex to somehow provide those units who amph assualted supply.  So the Battleships also have a dual role they are Battleships and Mulberry's.  The Mulberry function is normally handled as part of your amph but they choose the Battleship to do the function.  The Battleship choice maybe all right but the choose to not have Amph is and was not a good one.

It is kinda fun to sit your air just out of range of the British though and bomb those transport/amph.  At least they rarely land at anywhere near full strength if they land at all.

Another strangeness that results from this is the US almost always lands in France instead of England.  No reason to go to England just to load to go to France so they simply head to France.

Agree about the US troops, I have never landed in Britain first, I either go straight to invade France or if I'm not ready, simply wait on transport mode until I'm ready to do so.

While this game may permit long distance amphibious operations, outside of lba cover, I suspect that such an operation would be somewhat short-lived. Lba will slice and dice the amphibs, and whatever is left to crawl ashore will be pulverized by the defenders land forces.

As far as range and time limits, one wonders why we need that? A game of this scale unavoidably needs to have some operational features handled in an abstract way. Amphibs starting in the USA and proceeding directly to France may seem "unrealistic", but it achieves the same effect as if they had stopped in the UK first. And the underlying reality is that there still needs to be a LOT of air support from the UK to ensure that the majority of the amphibs are able to transition to "feet dry".

targul -> RE: Amph Operations (8/18/2007 6:18:43 PM)

Actually I would not call it unrealistic which is a word I use often.  There was the one instance when we landed in Africa the the US actually did leave from the US and make an amph with them.  This wasnt anywhere close to the problems of landing in France but it was done.

The parts that are incorrect is one) German's have no defenses along the channel.  This defenses were immense and considered formidable.

2) Troops sitting for 20 days prior to off loading.  One they would mostly be sick as a dog two they would have starved.  Three I have never seen a latrine on an amph but then these are transports and they do have latrine.
