Rybeck -> IJN carriers not launching strikes (7/15/2007 9:05:10 PM)

This is CHS 2.08 scen 155, advanced weather on.

A situation developed (late Dec 1941) where the opposing carrier fleets ended up two hexes apart. There were clouds above the IJN fleet in the AM phase but the skies were clear over both fleets during the PM.

Allied carriers launch two air strikes at the IJN. The CAP flies and some minor damage is sustained, but there is NO retaliation against the Allied carriers.

All IJN Val and Kate units were set to naval attack and have morale between 70-80. The IJN taskforce moved about 5 hexes (I think) in the previous turn. Searchplanes spotted the Allied ships.

Is this normal or did I miss something [&:]

There's a finite probability of this occuring. The game engine uses random number draws to model these things, but chunks things too broadly to get realistic statistical results. Also, a lot of the statistical models are incorrect.

So in other words I just got really unlucky that round? [;)] This kind of thing wouldn't happen TWO days running would it [X(]

Oh, and the admiral in charge was the nervous/cautious Nagumo, that probably didn't help?

Better check the sorties remaining in your CVs - if they've been at sea a long time, their sorties may be used up, and in that case they will fly only search and CAP missions.

A common mistake after PH strikes is for Japanese player to forget to reset target orders for KB squadrons - if target is still set as PH then they may not fly even if you changed orders to Naval Attack.

Rybeck -> RE: IJN carriers not launching strikes (7/16/2007 5:26:28 AM)

Yeah checked my max sorties - they were over 90% so no problem there, and yes I did clear the Pearl Harbor target after those strikes, so it was probably a statistical anomaly as herwin said.

The next turn however, said carriers came back to life and launched a series of strikes that did some damage, sinking, among other things, CV Enterprise. Whew.

This isnt 100% true. If all your air strikes are used up and you are on naval attack, it will send 1 bomber (usually a Kate for the Japs).

I had a simular instance under 1.804 where my carriers wouldnt even MOVE for 3 days while American carriers pounded them (they still flew their CAP). But I havent seen it since. What version are you playing?

tsimmonds -> RE: IJN carriers not launching strikes (7/16/2007 2:40:31 PM)

What was your TFs' speed setting? If you use all your Op Points in movement, you will have no Op Points left to conduct flight operations.

If that's not the case, is it possible that the enemy TFs were not detected? What a/c did you have on naval search?

I think I was on full speed and moved 5 hexes, but I've done that before and the planes still flew. It is possible that in that instance I ran out of Op points.

The enemy TFs were fully detected. I had a bunch of Jakes and Petes that spotted them, down to specific ships, e.g. CV Enterprise.

While i am currently on 1.806, i haven't had a carrier battle with it... my most recent carrier battles were with pre 1.8.

Interesting - i've never seen this one... is this vs. AI or PBEM?
