MarkShot -> Quiet? (7/18/2007 6:53:51 AM)

All of a sudden it has gotten quiet in here. Anyone still playing CAW? What scenarios are you playing? What are you doing to spice it up?

Myself, I took a break from CCAW. Went off to play a few of my other games. Additionally, I started trying to teach myself a new game, Capitalism II (an MBA business simulator). I thought after playing some games with only light financial sides, I might try one with a hardcore basis in business and economy.

Maybe I will come back to CCAW later this week after declaring bankruptcy a few times! :)

I've got an unopened copy (PDF rules) always wanted to give it a play. Thanks for reminding me!

I've been shopping parts for a new system. Like the one that I'm writing this one, it's a tad more "muscular" than what's needed to play CaW. And, like most of you, I don't believe that 2D is a problem so long as the game's squared-away. This parts acquisition process will take several more weeks (because the CPU is has yet to be released by the manufacturer).

I'll take a second look at CaW when it's patched. I really purchased the game for competitive, online play. For that to be a worthwhile experience, the bugs will have to be remedied and some semblance of play balance made apparent. SSG is apparently working on a "bug and features" patch. It may take a while to get it coded and tested. We'll see.

Im glad to hear SSG is working on a "bug and features" patch.  I did try CCAW and it had some nuances and artwork I wish could be duplicated in CAW, but that lack of zoom is hard to get used to. Till then Ive decided to try Uncommon Valor again, Pacific Fighters, and though I may go blind,1942 PAW through Dosbox(only game where I can pilot a Kate).

MarkShot -> RE: Quiet? (7/18/2007 5:06:49 PM)

PAW? What a great game prior to the release of EAW!

PAW has one of the best game replay recorders ever implemented. You could edit and choreograph your video recordings and even step back into the fight.

Adam,

CAP2 ... on one hand it seems quite attractive. On the other hand, it is so complex and involved I just wonder if the it is going to be worth the learning curve and if it will be fun.

PoE,

Speaking of CPU load. The other day I tried some TC2M on this system (QX6700 OC'd to 3.2GHz). I was able to easy run an OP with 200,000/cannons enage (processor #4), a virus scan (processor #1), and a time compression utility (process #3) for TC2M which allows 4X even while units are enaged. With all that, it was running TC2M fully enaged at 4X as smooth a silk! :)

That's pretty impressive.

A question, though...

The game maps are limited in size because of the graphics engine.

Because of the limited area, did you find things cramped with so many figures in play?

MarkShot -> RE: Quiet? (7/18/2007 5:28:29 PM)

Totally agree. 200k-300k on a map is ridiculous. I prefer much smaller stuff myself. I simply did that, because I could.

My old machine, 2002 P4 2.53GHz with 1Gb of RAM, would choke an anything if I wasn't careful to keep the size small. Even a lot of the delivered scenarios presented problems.

Sometimes, I just think it's silly to think of all the power this machine has and I am playing games 10 year old DOS games on it. I feel I should go out and get a copy of MTW2 or COH to really put it through its paces.

I'm not sure what the hard-and-fast-rule on this is, but I believe that you need at least two GB or RAM to play with the high-resolution sprites enabled. Even then, though, scenarios like (the last of) Pope are mighty taxing on most systems.

Oops, we've strayed off topic! [;)]

JD Walter -> RE: Quiet? (7/18/2007 6:28:08 PM)

Hi MarkShot,

I'm still playing CAW MP, but after having it for a few weeks now, I have run through all the scenarios and find solitaire play unfulfilling, since I now know most of the best actions to take with each side's TF's. Also, of course, a human opponents is always a much better challenge than any AI.

With the re-release of "Cross of Iron", I've returned to the Close Combat series for HtH play. Very challenging, especially Dreaded88's Grossdeutschland variant. (In fact GD v2.0 is the only way I play solo now.)

I have Capitalism Plus (IMagic); never opened it. Is this the same as Capitalism 2, or was it a predecessor/successor?

Have also returned to some of my old characters in Titan Quest. (Especially since I discovered I'd forgotten my D2 account and let all my characters expire. Drats! There went a lvl 54 Pally I was building... and all my runes!) :(

Still, very much fun to just go and slap things ... [:)]

On the deck: Oblivion (still), M2TW (when they finally get everything patched), COTA (back again), CMBO (old classics never go out of style), ASL.

Interested in Commander:EAW & either BOA or AACW, but want to hear a bit more about them before deciding which to buy.

MarkShot -> RE: Quiet? (7/18/2007 7:49:26 PM)

The sequence of games was: Capitalism, Capitalism Plus, and Capitalism II. The two former being DOS and the latter being Windows.

I was surprised to see you playing Cap2, I have that too. That is an amazingly complex game. The stock portion is really neat. I haven't played it for some time but just last week I reinstalled it. I remember I used to get beat in that game because I got too greedy all the time. I built too much too fast. When I slowed down and bought the land with minerals for my products, I would then slow the game down to a crawl and set up manufacturing really thorough and I would do better.

I have been playing "Gary Grigsby's A World Divided." CAW just got too boring. It needs work.

I got a new video card, a GeForce 8800 GTS and so I also bought Supreme Commander and F.E.A.R to test it out. I have been playing those two titles two, but not as much as AWD. I bought two of those cards hoping to run them in SLI mode. Well, they are such hogs that I couldn't get them both to work. The one is much better than the two GeForce 6800's in SLI that I had. Much better! So I had to send one back for a refund.

That's the story here for being quiet in this forum. [;)]

MarkShot -> RE: Quiet? (7/18/2007 8:00:58 PM)

I was having fun playing Railroad Tycoon Deluxe and 1830. So, I decided to get CAP2 and see what a heavy duty business game/simulation was all about. However, I am not sure if I am going to put in the required time investment or not.

Some games require such huge investments and when you are finally done, then they just don't have you on the end of your seat. I put in over six months into Paradox's Victoria. Finally, I am really playing the game, but it is just long sagas and not too exciting. So, I am concerned about long learning curves. I like games that you can perhaps require a lot of effort to learn, but you can also know if the fun is going to be there early on or not.

I also have Victoria. I got tired of that game fast but it is very popular on the Gamersgate site ratings. Gosh, I have 48 good titles on my PC now and I have trouble finding one that's fun?! That's terrible! The game that I play often instead of Victoria is Europa Universalis-3. Excellent game! Great support and forums too. Paradox has supplied me with a lot of games. Name one and I bet I have it. That's not a good thing either. [X(] I used to have a rule that I could not buy another game until I finished the one I was playing. I immediately changed that rule, I abolished the dang thing!!!

Company Of Heroes is a great game. I play that when in the mood for graphics in combat. Super graphics too. However, I see that they are going to put out a sequel I think at the start of next year. I was tinkering with Silent Service-3 but got tired of so many restrictions I gave it up.

Games, games, and more games! Men and their toys! Oh boy! [:D]

Joe D. -> RE: Quiet? (7/18/2007 8:42:33 PM)

Larry, I bet you don't have Frontline, the recent Paradox release of the battle of Kursk? I do, and the forum for it is so small it only takes up one page. The game has the "Blitzkrieg" engine, but in a more historical format. Unfortunately, winning a scenario is hard because Frontline instructions are as enigmatic as a CDV release!

I'm replaying some of the scenarios for C@W; I've already played thru most of the variants for the Allies, but already this game is getting old. I hope the first patch includes some new material.

Can't wait for BtfB to be released.

ONEI -> RE: Quiet? (7/18/2007 8:43:19 PM)

HI Rick here

It sure is Quiet on the CCAW, I was asking earlier about, and got no reply?

Were can I obtain British .srf files, in order to create a Indian Ocean scenario.

Is there aslo a B24 (early model LB 30 Liberator) out there any were?

MarkShot -> RE: Quiet? (7/18/2007 8:47:10 PM)

Actually, I think I may finally play TC2M the full set of scenarios. I finally have a PC capable of running the game from end to end.

I had originally been thinking of playing some OP, but OP is pretty straight forward. I think the scenarios present a much better set of crafted challenges.

Nope, don't have Frontline. You got me on that one. [:'(] Do you like it much?

I hope the same on the first patch for CAW. We will find out.

Joe D. -> RE: Quiet? (7/18/2007 11:31:02 PM)

I just bought Frontline, so it's too soon to tell, but the price went from $30 and change to $19.99 in no time, which usu. isn't a good sign w/o a sequel in sight.

As I said, it's Blitzkrieg engine, but more historical with good attention to force balance; however, the scenarios are a real pain to win w/o a walk-thru, and the support/forum is very small. Not like this forum at all!

I assume UV is still behaving for you.

Markshot: Good luck w/the Pope scenarios in TC2M. You'll need it!

I'm waiting for them to patch the game and make some aspects of scenario creation a bit clearer.
