CommC -> Commander Fabulous!!!! (7/19/2007 3:49:01 AM)

Commander Europe at War is fabulous.

1. Complexity
Has just the right balance of complexity: not too many units to manage, yet has enough and the right size hexes to allow tactics, including cutting off supply, counter attacking supply lines, etc. 2-week turns mean not too many turns in a game that it becomes overwhelming, but enough to effectively control all the aspects of the war in sufficient detail to execute your strategy.

2. Unit attibutes
Although there are few different types of units, each has both a strength and an effectiveness attribute which allows a wide range of unit qualities... allowing the game to simulate everything from raw recuits of boys and old men, to highly trained troops such as paratroopers.

3. Supply
Supply seems perfectly modeled. When units are out of supply, their mobility immediately suffers, and effectiveness decreases over time

4. Population limits
The idea to decrease the effectiveness of new units as more of the population is mobilized is brilliant, and accurately models the historical reality

5. Air operations
Automatic escort and CAP defense with fighters is a great idea, and works perfectly.

6. Rail and sea transport
This is sensibly modeled and seems to reflect the historical situation very well

7. Commanders
The commander feature is an added nice touch!

8. Reinforcements and upgrades
The was units can be reinforced after combat losses, and upgraded after research successes is very well done and again closely models the historical practice.

Overall, CEAW seems to combine a number of innovations in wargaming with a sensible balance of complexity to give an excellent game and sim of WWII in Europe.

A hearty thanks and congratulations to the design and programming team!

Edit: I added a couple more high points.

Glad to see you really like it.  Did you actually play it?

Great - glad you like the game! It's good to know we're pleasing some people ;)

I agree with you but then I'm biassed :)

Been playing CEaW pretty well non-stop since it came out ..
Its got a great baseline to expand on ...
I leave it for History to judge our actions .. !! [:'(]

Its not very satisfying or even challenging for a Wargamer to just continue to play games like ... OK Yep Im saying it .. [:D]
WiE and such that are archaic in the extreme .. To say nothing of the fact they don't even incorporate Naval .. Air and Land assets in a cohesive and realistic framework .. Even after 30 Years .. [8|]

I have not played the game in awhile now awaiting patch to see if it can be made playable.

I too believe it has potential but I do not believe that potential will be seen until someone mods are available and major repairs to game concepts such a weather and amph assault.  No weather on the west just makes people do weird things.  Just plain transporting to beaches is simplistic and not functional.

Tech is allowed to run rampant in one area while letting other areas go unnoticed which scews the game in strange ways everytime.  This is probably the most noticable thing you find that is wrong with the game when you play any players.  If they would balance the techs game would play out much better then the present hot dog system available.

If they can make the game AI work in the Med and teach it how to make an Amph landing it would be a good AI game which is how I intend to play it in the future but it will need substanial improvements in that area since its competitions AI is significantly better at this point.

I think the game is terrific... agree that it has just the right balance... the most fun I have had playing a strategic level wargame since War in Russia

willgamer -> RE: Commander Fabulous!!!! (7/20/2007 3:02:19 AM)

Me too... casual gamer kudos  [:D]

Seems there are always 2 camps on these sorts of games. The, usually more vocal, grognard competitors and the, mostly silent, single player, casuals.

We casuals are really greatful to the grog competitors for helping to improve the games.

Sadly we cannot return the favor as we could care less about exploits and have none to suggest, are challenged by even the normal AI [X(], and have little time to document our historical points of view as we are enjoying playing now.

Life is sooooo unfair   [:'(].

Happycat -> RE: Commander Fabulous!!!! (7/20/2007 3:55:52 AM)

I'm warming up to it too.  I think when I ranked it I placed it in the middle of the pack, but it has many hidden charms, slowly and lovingly revealed (like a reluctant virgin?).  Definitely a great game for PBEM, but I have also given the AI another chance at a higher setting, and it is making life miserable (in a good way) for me.[:)]

War in Russia? You must be OLD. As old as me even. [:D]

Dgold -> RE: Commander Fabulous!!!! (7/20/2007 4:43:32 AM)

This game is the most fun I have had since playing PG II. The more I play it, the more credit I give to the AI.

I am playing against the Axis AI as the Allies - with some help to the Axis. It is now late November 1942 and the Axis hordes are three hexes from Moscow - we are locked in a bitter struggle. I neglected to devote enough Production to research so the AI is killing me with his superior armour and air units. I don't believe that Russia gets enough Production points to stop the Axis, but I understand that the patch makes things a little easier for the Russians. Leningrad is under siege in the North. In the South the Axis hasn't got past Kharkhov.

I conquered Italian North Africa and then I invaded Vichy North Africa. The Italians never reinforced Africa - they send a lot of corps to the Russian front. I then captured Sicily unopposed, then landed in South Italy and captured Taranto. I am now two hexes from Rome - the Italians have only 2 infantry corps and an air unit near Rome. When I take it, I assume that all the Italian units in Russia will disappear. I think the Axis AI should be tweaked so that if Italy is invaded - Sicily or the mainland, all Italian units in Russia should start to be railed or marched home. Perhaps this is addressed in the patch? Also, Italian production seems to be too high vis-a-via the Brits and the USA.

A word of advice as the Russians - build maximum allowed labs for research! Otherwise your T-26 tanks will be facing German Tigers.

I highly recommend this game to all gamers.

Would it be possible to create a World War I scenario with the coming game editor?
