Check it out:

http://www.armageddonempires.com/

Armageddon Empires is a computer turn based strategy game that takes the best elements of collectable card games (don’t worry there are no cards to chase you get them all), board games, and computer games and brings them all together to provide a unique interactive strategy war game experience. You can choose a normal size map and battle in a death match with a single AI opponent finishing within an hour or select a huge map and slug it out with the other 3 factions in a game of epic proportions.

Turn based strategy game in a post-apocalyptic setting versus 1 to 3 AI opponents.

Hexagonal maps depicting the ravaged wastes of earth circa 2345 featuring 3 map sizes ranging from normal to huge.

4 playable factions each with unique units, art and playing styles.

Over 75 faction heroes lead your armies into battle. Heroes allow for larger, more effective armies and have their own special abilities that can change the tide of battle or even create new weapons and technology cards.

Over 200 unique units wage battle across the savage landscape; command infantry, cyborgs, robots, powered battle armor, armor, artillery, mecha, biomecha and many more.

Over 80 unique special abilities for heroes and units; abilities like multi-targeting, shock attack, double attack, fanatic, military genius and valor allow you to find exciting combos of play just like you would in a collectible card or miniatures game.

Collectible card game flavor without the expense. Each hero, unit or facility is a card that can be added to your play deck.

Board game mechanics. Roll a unit’s attack die versus another unit’s defense die and play special abilities and cards to alter the results.

Assassinate enemy heroes, sabotage enemy facilities, gather intelligence through espionage and stealth, hunt down enemy heroes and hold them prisoner.

Drop thermonuclear weapons on your enemies or load out your units with tactical nuke cards created by your leading technologists.

Customizable game parameters allow you to select deck point values, tile point values, map size, resource rarity, specials rarity, and victory conditions

Challenging goal based AI agents see the same game you do and must gather intelligence, build armies and formulate plans just like you: “No cheating.”

I've tried the demo, the game looks promising. Sadly the turn limit is utter crap, it should be at least 40+.

Terminus -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (7/19/2007 5:50:34 PM)

It does look pretty good, even if I'm not a fan of the CCG approach...

LarryP -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/1/2007 10:13:20 PM)

I tried the demo and it has a lot to offer, however not one single tooltip. Tooltips for a game like this sure would be nice. I would purchase this title if it had them. [:(]

JudgeDredd -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/1/2007 11:10:47 PM)

I'm sure this is the 3rd thread about this game.

LarryP -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/2/2007 12:10:21 AM)

Have you tried the demo?

JudgeDredd -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/2/2007 12:15:06 AM)

No. I'm not overly big on fantasy strategy. I prefer a bit of fact to my strategy games. Even if it's loosely based.

LarryP -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/2/2007 12:18:27 AM)

I don't care for fantasy either. Got to have some truth to it for me to stay interested.

Haplo_Patryn -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/2/2007 1:06:10 AM)

I've got the game and is, in my opinion, the big surprise of 2007. One of the best wargames of the 2007 and a very addictive one. I'm posting AARs (in spanish, sorry) in different spanish forums and all the people who have bought the game are as surprised as i am.

I'm a moderator in a wargame spanish site and i know very well all the most famous wargames of the market. I like them a lot and Armageddon Empires is a very good one. In spite of its fantasy argument it's a very good wargame. [:)]

ezzler -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/2/2007 1:23:05 AM)

it is being spamed everywhere.

However I am glad i bought it, it's had more playtime on my PC than ACW already.

LarryP -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/2/2007 5:12:35 AM)

There are a lot of items on each screen and it is a shame there is not one single tooltip though. [&:]

Yep...tooltips are a great thing for developers to add. AEGODs games have great tooltips

Me being a programmer I know how easy it is to create\add them. It's peanuts, only requiring time. So when a game has none I figure the developer either had his\her eyes closed or just plain lazy. [X(] To me they are mandatory. AGEOD's AACW and BoA are excellent examples of how tooltips should be applied. [&o]

"Me being a programmer I know how easy it is to create\add them. It's peanuts, only requiring time."

being a code monkey as well, that quote made me laugh... its a great double meaning !
theres many a time i have to estimate a software job and i say "oh yeah, that's easy... it will just take 100 hours !"

AGEOD have raised the standard in people expectations with some very good products, look how much flak GoA has got wrt its interface. in its defense GoA has the depth that grogs want and like.

fantasy games arent for me, so i will this one a miss.

LarryP -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/2/2007 9:00:11 PM)

Yeah, when I typed that about being peanuts to add I thought twice afterwards. Programming can take SOOOO much longer than originally anticipated. [:@]

JudgeDredd -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/2/2007 11:19:28 PM)

Actually, also being a programmer, it takes half as long sometimes to type your comments in, nevermind tooltips!

My programmes are full of tooltips, but I do constantly have to re-adjust my development cycle

Cool! I had no idea you were also a code junkie. [;)]

JudgeDredd -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/3/2007 1:14:03 AM)

Yes...Visual Basic and SQL Server...currently trying to learn C#...mostly database development.

I wouldn't know where to start programming a game, although I would love to have a go....even something very small.

LOL, I know, I was wondering if it's the same dude in a stealth marketing campaign going from site to site. :)

However, I did check out the demo and was pleasantly surprised. Interface was a bit clunky but I for the most part really enjoyed it. A very interesting take. Ahh, if I only had the time I'd probably get it. Might get it anyway just to support the development.

Database is one thing I haven't done. That's good to know, database that is. I moved from C++ to C# Visual Studio 2005. Visual Basic has come a ways in the last ten years. I learned with QBasic, then Pascal, Visual Basic, Delphi (Guns Of August is done in Delphi), C++, then over to C#. The one thing I get tired of in C# is everything has to be done in classes. And the VB programmers always wanted classes. Go figure! [;)][&:]

I have written a ton of smaller stuff, all for gaming. I started in MSDOS and wrote some shareware that did quite well 15 years ago. It's been a while though since I have been that productive. There are a ton of examples (source code) for VB games on the Internet. Download what you like and tweak things and play to see how it worked. You would be writing games in no time! [:)] It's a blast to do that way. Beats putting your head in books.

I also tried to fiddle around and take a look at game development as I do some coding for apps etc and mostly in vbasic myself.  I even purchased easy to develop tools like gamemaker and even look at the torque engine.  The problem at least for me is to even develop games now a days you need to have graphic and music resources.  So even though let's say I can grasp the coding and do all of that with no issues (not that I fully can but for argument sake let's assume I could) I would still need for somebody to do the graphics for the menu, splash screen, units, or 3D models or whatever type of game you want to develop.  Then you would need for somebody to do the music for you.  Unless you know and can do graphics, music, and coding on your own then there are a lot of good tools that make it easier to program your first game.  However if you only know one of the 3 skills needed you either need cash to invest and pay a graphic artist to develop the graphic work for you and a musician to develop the sounds.

True if you start with a 3D top of the line game. However, you can download and collect all kinds of copyright free sound files. You can also use Photoshop or MSPaint to do simple to professional images. If you start out small and in 2D, then you climb the ladder just like most everything else in life. You don't start at the top. You have fun at the same time.

If you use DirectX then you get graphics and sound. Even in OpenGL you get great graphics and use DirectX for the sound. There are thousands of downloadable source files for games on the Internet. www.gamedev.net is a fantastic place to start for any language. You can search their database and ask any questions. [;)]

There are also thousands of programming books at Amazon.com for just about anything. If money is short, you can buy them used too at Amazon.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/3/2007 10:15:46 AM)

Thanks larry...I'd like to tinker, but I'm not sure about trying to meet the demands of Joe Public...their very unforgiving (even if they haven't played the game!!! You know who I mean [;)] )

JudgeDredd -> RE: Interesting new strategy game (8/3/2007 10:17:43 AM)

LarryP that is funny about classes, because I was dragged into classes all those years ago. And yes, VB users always wanted classes...didn't get them for a while though and when we did, they weren't fully implemented though...more of an after thought. Their pretty core now though.

Ever since classes were introduced in Borland's C, C++, and Turbo Pascal, I have despised them. I still use Visual C++ but WITHOUT classes. I'm a firm believer in spaghetti code that's done properly. [;)] [:D]
