Any one found an effective use for her?

Effective is a relative term. You can use her to shuttle fighter squadrons between Australia and Noumea, as a lead screen/target tf for the six pack (ahistorical) or as an immedite return to PH to free up points (what I generally do).

Sink her and use her as a diving attraction.

No really though, I have no clue. Never played as the Allies.

I have noticed none of my opponents use her for combat though so she must be pretty useless.

She has value as a shuttle for P-40s, P-39s, P-400s and A-24s between Oz and Noumea.  You could also use her as part of an ASW group if you put some planes on her.  She could also be used for fighter cover for transports where none can reach.  Keep her away from expected combat though.

The worst part is she doesn't come with any planes. I've only played the game up to Oct '42 so far. Other than give her planes from other sunken carriers is there a way to acquire planes for her? I could make use of her as a transport CAP source if she had fighters but, so far, fighters from sunken carriers are much more useful in Port Moresby.

Agreed: back to Pearl for this sad ship, but when the proverbial "bad penny" returns to Noumea, it never has any improvements, i.e., more AAA, armor, etc.

My experience is limited, but the best use I have found was for a homeless TBD then TBF group who's carrier was sunk. I kept it on ASW patrol around Australia, and bagged a few subs. That was against the AI however.

Actually, one of your most valuable ships early in the game.  She is critical for transporting short ranged aircraft between Oz and Noumea. Later in the game she is not so valuable so you can send her home- or load SBDs of Avengers on her. She makes an excellent ASW convoy-one of the main reasons jeep carriers were built for.

By the way, as an aside. The Long Island had the last operational squadron of Navy Buffalos. The squadron was based on her during the battle of Midway. By the time of Guadacanal, she was strictly an aircraft ferry.

i use her to provide fighter cover or ASW patrol

i had her off OZ 1 time and she and her ASW group sank over 10 Jap boats

AI tho

My friend Miller has found an effective use for here...hmmm...as a mine sweeper. [:D]

Someone in this forum already said that any ship could be a a minesweeper, at least once.

tocaff -> RE: So what do you do with CVE Long Island? (9/14/2007 5:18:35 PM)

But you have to love the bug where a single ship hits 10-15-20+ mines in a single turn and then finally sinks.  Now that's an effective MSW vessel, use once and dispose of.
