Phisto -> Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/27/2007 7:55:19 PM)

Another question on game mechanics: IIRC, the manual states that the rebasing command is useful for transferring naval assets from Wilhelmshaven to the Baltic ports without going through the North Sea (by presumably going through the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal), and thus avoiding entanglements with the RN. However, my attempts so far to rebase transports and/or warships have been thwarted by the RN. Have I misunderstood how the rebase command is implemented? Thanks for the insight and the great game.

I have had the same problem. Whenever I have attempted to move my fleet to the Baltic, that damn Royal Navy is waiting to pounce. By using the canal, this should be risk free. Not sure if I too am doing something wrong or it is a bug, but the German Fleet always takes the long way around to the Baltic instead of the quick trip via the canal.

ojnab_bob -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/27/2007 9:13:22 PM)

I too have had this problem... can't seem to get any guys into the Baltic and/or Rostock without getting picked off by the RN.

SiTheSly -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/27/2007 9:34:24 PM)

Add my vote for not being able to avoid the RN in the North Sea.

Although I have noticed that they do get through in the end just badly damaged. By 1916 the fleet is used completely repaired if you keep pumping in navy points and tick the fleet refit box.

Then when they do sail the RN is not as strong and you have a chance to gain superioty.

Its a high risk strategy but if you can pull it off the Britain is toast without its trading fleet since it only produces 1 point of food and imports the rest which I think equtes to 9 or 10% moral loss per turn.

Still doesn't compare with being able to use the canal though.

SMK-at-work -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 6:25:04 AM)

It certainly was risk free in the beta....[&:]

quikstrike -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 6:37:54 AM)

Frank needs to add in restrictions for the Western Allies' navies, preventing them from entering the Baltic in a future patch. The RN never attempted a transit into the Baltic because of the hazards inherent in such a move. The Baltic should be a German lake--once the Russian Imperial Navy is beaten, of course. ;)

Jestre -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 3:39:22 PM)

I too have had my Imperial Navy mauled everytime I move from Wilhelmshaven to the Baltic.

Bossy573 -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 5:14:37 PM)

Same here. I thought I accidentally sent my ships into the North Sea.....

flintlock -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 5:20:14 PM)

I posted this in another thread earlier, but yeah, I haven't much luck either. Getting my fleet into the Baltic without being badly mauled by the British Grand Fleet seems par for the course.

TheBlackhorse -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 5:31:47 PM)

I always rebased (Usually in Aug 1914) from Wilhelmshaven to Rostock first and didn't have any British interference.

sol_invictus -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 6:03:15 PM)

I guess the British didn't send out the fleet in your case. I tried to rebase to Stettin last night and the jolly old RN was there to welcome me as I went through the North Sea. Since the German situation is unique, I am not sure if the program is failing to handle it as it should. Any ideas Frank?

TheBlackhorse -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 6:06:44 PM)

Not tue. The British Fleet is sitting there fat dumb and belligerent right off my coast.

Have you tried rebasing to Rostock vice Stettin?

sol_invictus -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 6:17:44 PM)

No, Stettin was my only attempt. I guess I will attempt every available Port and see what happens. Still, rebasing to Stettin should be no different than rebasing to Rostock, as far as British interception is concerned.

TheBlackhorse -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 6:36:15 PM)

Prrhaps since Rostock is the first port in the Baltic along the canal it sees it as being able to be reached via the canal. Choosing any other port results in an attempt by the High Seas Fleet to make a dash around the Jutland Peninsula?

sol_invictus -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 6:53:49 PM)

I tried Rostock and Danzig and the RN still intercepted me. At first, I thought since Rostock already had a fleet based there, that this is why you were able to Rebase the Wilhelmshaven fleet without incident, but that didn't help me.

On a related note, anyone know what happens when the enemy captures a port with a fleet based in it? I assume the fleet would automaticly Rebase to the nearest frinendly port.

TheBlackhorse -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 11:01:46 PM)

Did you rebase all ships at once, or did you rebase multiple times?

sol_invictus -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 11:23:59 PM)

I tried to Rebase them all at once.

flintlock -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/28/2007 11:54:52 PM)

As the CP, this is the most powerful fleet I've managed to squeeze into the Baltic (Sep-Oct '14 time frame).

SMK-at-work -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/29/2007 2:51:25 AM)

IIRC in the beta "risk free" rebasing only applied to Rostock - not Stettin or Danzig - if you wanted to go there for some reason you would have to do it on a subsequent turn.

I don't agree with this. The RN may have shied off from the risks of the Baltic, due to mines subs, and (mostly) the difficulty of supporting a fleet there with an intact HSF in Jade bay, but to ban it is wrong. The game should just reflect the difficulty of supporting it, and the high risk of losses. Moving into the Baltic was often talked about, so you cannot say it was inconceivable. If the HSF is defeated, (or more important, the light forces and subs are contained) putting a portion of the GF there is very logical and likely.

sol_invictus -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/29/2007 5:28:52 PM)

I agree, it shouldn't be impossible; Admiral Fischer advocated it; but maybe simply the cost in Naval Assets could be incresed to reflect the difficulties that were present.

Phisto -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/30/2007 3:21:15 PM)

I tried two iterations on rebasing from Wilhelmshaven to Rostock in August of 1914. As a fleet (PD, CA and Tr), they were intercepted and only the PD continued through to Rostock. The other two remained in Wilhelmshaven. The next game, they sortied as individual ships, and they were intercepted again (the combat screen grouped the three together) with the same results (PD to Rostock, others back to Wilhelmshaven) despite the RN landing only one hit on the PD. I must admit that I'm rather confused regarding the naval portion of the game:

1) Why does the RN intercept what should be a canal transit?
2) Why do some ships fail to make the rebase to Rostock, while others in the same squadron/attempt succeed?

JD Walter -> RE: Naval Rebasing: Wilhemshaven to the Baltic (7/30/2007 4:59:37 PM)

Agree, Phisto.

As the CP player, I have been unable to rebase the High Seas Fleet to a Baltic port without getting intercepted by British warships on patrol in the North Sea.

Perhaps Frank could permit CP players to choose their starting port in a patch, or reinstate the "free transfer" on the first turn.

this is what should happen

This is also correct from the Beta - there was NO free basing to Stettin or Danzig - only to Rostock.

FWIW I agree with Warspite about the RN in the Baltic - after all tehy built Furious etc precisely for a Baltic campaign.
