What can I do with American AV's??
I cannot seem to carry planes with them, I cannot detect any air support function derived from them?

tsimmonds -> RE: A wasted effort??? (7/28/2007 2:56:52 PM)

You use them to provide aviation support for seaplanes at locations where you don't have a BF.

Reg -> RE: A wasted effort??? (7/28/2007 3:21:10 PM)

Send an AV to Rennell Island and anchor in off the beach, throw a couple of supply points onto the beach from an AK. Fly in a PBY squadron and viola - instant seaplane base!!! (No engineers required).

Note the separate entries for the land based and seaplane aviation support and that the seaplane support appears if any AV is present (disbanded or in task force).

Also be aware an AV sitting out on its own usually attracts a bit of unwelcome attention so the Allies having a few spare tenders is useful if one has to make an unplanned retirement back to the repair yards*.

The screenshot below is from UV but WITP works the same way.

* Which is exactly why I can't post an example of a AV supporting a Catalina squadron based on Rennell Island!! [:(]
(They're still there but have no aviation support till I can get another tender back on station).

i agree, they seem pretty useless to me. If i'm gonna establish a forward seaplane base, i'm gonna use the faster and quicker AVD's. In general i put AV's in major staging areas and ports, to provide extra AA to the base.

Mike Wood -> RE: A wasted effort??? (7/28/2007 4:03:06 PM)

Hello...

I also use them for fast transport missions.

Bye...

Both faster AND quicker? Wow...[:'(]

(Sorry...)

I use AV's all the time, regardless of where on the map they go. AV's and AVD's both have equal merit.

i love superlatives....[;)]

Let me guess.... you guys are in advertising, right?

Local Yokel -> RE: A wasted effort??? (7/28/2007 8:02:25 PM)

AV's can be included in Fast Transport TF's.  Adds to their usefulness.  They should have a bigger lift than a DD, even if they won't get in and out so fast.  Historical precedent is Tangier's role in the abortive relief of Wake Island.

m10bob -> RE: A wasted effort??? (7/28/2007 8:50:42 PM)

Just seems to me those AV's and the editor were somehow meant for each other.[:)]

RUPD3658 -> RE: A wasted effort??? (7/28/2007 8:59:36 PM)

A word of warning about forward seaplane bases. As Japan, when I see an AC symbol at a dot base it just screams for a fast transport or surface combat TF to pay a visit.

Terminus -> RE: A wasted effort??? (7/28/2007 9:03:42 PM)

Yeah, well... You pays your money and you takes your chances...[:D]

From my experience you dont even have to do that just send miss Betty and miss Nell to the dance...they'll wreck the party for sure.

I use AVs in my larger forward bases. Why use up good land based aviation support on seaplanes.

I use AVDs at very forward bases and dont leave them there too long. I also use AVDs for TF escort in very out of the way places.

Thanks Mike, I completely forgot that AVs could be used for fast transport. That gives me a new idea.

Halsey -> RE: A wasted effort??? (7/29/2007 4:11:34 AM)

I use mine in support packages.

4 AR's
1 AD
1 AS
1 MLE
1 AV

One group at every moderate sized front line port.[;)]

Ditto except I use an HQ instead of the 4 AR .. I leave all the AR back in Japan and bring the HQs forward ... but as to every moderate sized front line port [:D] well I usually just have one such group, maybe two ... but then I don't make any more AD or AS or AV ... so I guess I'd say I use them in "Fleet Support" packages!

Halsey -> RE: A wasted effort??? (7/29/2007 6:19:24 AM)

Yep, the IJN has a plethora of Naval HQ's.

Not the Allies though...[:(]

I park them on dots and only send AVDs in when there are only a few left flyable. You would catch one of my AVDs maybe. Because after the first, there would be a major force waiting for your 2nd try [:'(]

crsutton -> RE: A wasted effort??? (7/30/2007 6:58:47 PM)

I use them in rear area bases to support sub watching cats....where I am not too worried about Japanese raiders. This frees up the base forces on these islands for duty elsewhere. I only leave base forces in place when I need the location for ferrying heavies to the South Pacific.
