I have noticed a real shortage of "qualified" US CVL captains. Most of my fleet carriers have good leaders, but all of my CVLs have leaders with "air skill" somewhere in the upper 20s to low 30s. [:(]...I feel like I need to send them to a "special" school on these new-fangled contraptions called air-o-planes. [:D]

What do others do to compensate for this lack of air combat knowledge? What roles to most players use their CVL in?

The historical one, as support for the big carriers.

Support? Does that mean alongside flying the same missions?

Yes. "Standard" CV TF in 44 was 3 Essex and 1 Independance.

That's only because Nimitz was unaware of the >200 plane/tf strike penalty.
