Shaun,

Just wondering if you had decided to implement the feature where you could enter a custom phonetic spelling of a player's name that would then be announced during the game. It was a great part of Earl Weaver Baseball, and I believe players would feel the same way if it was incorporated into PS...

Lee, you might be the only guy that wants this.  I tried using the player announcements, and it just won't work the way you want it to work.  Names will be butchered, so I turned that option off.

That being said, if you wanna rename every player in the database, then feel free to do so.

Glenn, where is the file that allows you to phonetically edit the player announcements?...What I had in mind, which Shaun commented on awhile back, was a phonetic editing capability like that used in Earl Weaver Baseball. Perhaps that was only available in EWB, but it sounded to me like he could put something like that in PureSim...lee

I hope Shaun will look into this, as well as adding more capabilities for player-created enhancements of the game-by-game experience.

Lee, I added it this morning. Here is a blurb from the next update (not sure when I will release it yet, but 1.64 beta testing is going great so far):

NEW! - For those of you that use the speech engine feature that announces the batter when he comes to the plate, I added a new field to the edit player screen named "Text to Speech" You can fill in this field with a more phonetic spelling of the player's name if you feel the speech engine is butchering the pronunciation. Since my all time favorite game growing up was Earl Weaver Baseball on the Amiga, many of you may remember it had this feature. Consider this homage to Eddie Dombrower, that game's developer. Believe it or not Eddie and I actually discussed collaborating on a baseball game not too long ago -- didn't get far into discussions but it was pretty cool given how long I had admired his work.

Oh and by default it will be populated with the player's current name, that happens automatically when the association is upgraded, so you won't have to do too much typing except in cases where you want to tweak the phonetics. There s a little "Say It" button next to the text box so you can refine it all from the edit player screen until you get it just right.

Note in order to use thei feature you must have "[x] Speech Engine" enabled under options and utilities. You can tweak text to speech from Windows Control Panel (PureSim uses the text to speech engine integrated into XP/Vista)

Shaun, this is great news.  I hope it is well-received by the PureSim community.  Eddie Dombrower became a gaming hero of mine right after I played my first game of EWB. I still have my Amiga 500 sitting on a side desk in my den, although I haven't fired it up in awhile...Thank you for recreating the phonetic player name feature in PS...Another reason why you rank alongside Eddie Dombrower at the top of my gaming hero list...lee
