Bevington -> Triple Entente Victory? (8/7/2007 4:50:36 AM)

To date I have played the 1914 scenario three times as the TE. The first two times I made a number of novice errors in set up and administration, partly due to the clarity of the manual and mostly due to the fact that I rushed to play and didn't digest the info as it exists. Needless to say, the CP AI thrashed me fairly well. I found many of the comments made by other players in the various threads to be extremely helpful and thank you for the aid. And so I commenced my third go round. I decided to fight a delaying action in the West and have the Russian steamroller focus almost exclusively on the Austro-Hungarians. By December 1914 the Russians were one hex from Vienna and Budapest. Several minor Austro-Hungarian cities had fallen. However the offensive capabilities of Russia & Serbia were fully exhausted. On the Western Front, the Germans had captured Liege, Nancy and Epinal. The Central Powers had suffered 1.69 million casualties; The Triple Entente 1.94 million. No nations had been conquered though Austro-Hungary was "wavering". The screen displayed "Marginal TE Victory", yet I believe the Victory Point total stood at a -8. Is this correct? Or is the -8 TE victory another potential bug in addition to the previous mentioned glitches with sound and window size. Finally, I greatly appreciate the efforts of Frank Hunter, Matrix and the playtesters for bringing this greatly appreciated WWI project to fruition. I have long been a student of The Great War. My keen interest is in part due to the fact my maternal grandfather served in this conflict with the King's (Liverpool) Regiment. He was wounded by gassing on the last day of Kaiserschlact (Operation Michael).

IIRC the victory conditions/levels are different for each scenario - in 1914 the CP is expected to attack and take large areas of France, so only being "a little behind" is a good result for the TE.

SMK,
Thanks for your quick input. It's good to know I may have succeeded legitimately!

The victory point display is a lttile funky: a negative number means the TE is winning, positive means CP, no matter which side you're playing.

Well that certainly explains the negative number

Right, 0 is a draw.  Negative is good for the TE victory and positive is good for the CP victory.

The game takes into account the year when assessing victory.

Frank,
Thanks for that clarification and congrats on a splendid new design. The game is much enjoyed in our household.

Bevington
